My current specs are AMD X2 4200+, 2GB RAM and a 256MB X1950 Pro. I want to be able to play Crysis on a decent setting. Ive tried the demo and anything above medium kills it. Is it worth getting an 8800 GT? Or will my CPU bottleneck it in anyway? I dont fancy spending more than £200 but any other suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.

Your current GPU is decent. You should wait for the 9800 series.

I have the same CPU as you and I just upgraded from a 7800GT to a 8800GTS 512. With the new card, my computer runs Crysis quite well at high/very high settings (although no computer can run it perfectly at those settings). The only thing our CPU seems to bottleneck is RTSs such as World in Conflict, but I'm still not sure if the slowdowns in that game are because of my CPU.

i agree, it would be better to wait for 9000 series, your current gpu should last you.

the 8800gt works perfectly fine with his existing amd4200 which its worth 200& ,just imagin how much the new 9800gtx is worth and ofcurse he needs a whole new mobo and cpu to match with it .

Thats a very good point. The power of the 9 series may be not be fulfilled with that processor.Heck the 8800GT is pushing it hard the way it is let alone the 9 series.

Exactly. Bottleneck? What's that? 3-5FPS loss? Really? How drastic. What an absolute load of sh**. Don't even let that word stop you from buying a new, lovely, high-end GFX card. As long as you've got a decent dual-core CPU, don't let that bloody word hinder your decision. I've got an X2 4600 @ 2.8Ghz and it fulfills the job very nicely. I'm probably going to wait for ATI's dual-core GPU...

hes right all AMDs x2s are pretty dam good, and wont bottleneck anything over 5fps. which isnt a big deal unless your rich or somethin.

I'm not sure exactly how much is 200 pounds, but if the gt is priced in that range in the UK, and you don't want to spend more, you'll definitely notice major improvements with that card, (it's much much faster than your 1950, and important detail, it will have 512 in vram, crucial for crysis... A 9800 series in a few months would be a good idea, but you'd have to spend more...(if the gt is priced at 200 pounds...)

And don't worry about bottleneck for the moment you configuration should let you play pretty much everything with great framerate...

If above medium is what you want in Crysis, you'll probably be pretty disappointed with the 8800GT. Single player runs decently, but I find myself playing on Medium in order to get a playable FPS on some multiplayer maps. You should save up for a 9000 series card; the upgrade you want to perform isn't worth it in the long run.

I say just buy an Evga 8800GT and step up to a 9000series in February if the rumors are really true(i'm always skeptical of rumors, what happened to the 9800 in November). While i'm not sure on his system but on mines my 8800GT gets very playable framerates on high on 1680 x 1050 in MP.

Really? I have a 512MB 8800 GT and I get like 20 frames on Very High on Crysis while getting 50+on high for DX9 and about 30-40 on DX 10 (both look the same on High).

I recently got an 8800gt, and will soon be stepping up to a revised gts. From my 7800gt, I saw a huge increase in performance. I went from playing Oblivion at 1024 x 768 at 20 - 30 to 1680 - 1050 at around 30 fps. Crysis - all high, shaders set to medium - around 30 fps.

So it was a huge improvement, and I can understand why other people are saying you should wait, but I honestly needed the upgrade.
