Current specs in sig(i dont OC)

I plan tp upgrade my Core 2 Duo E4400 to somthing better sometime later on. I only game and go on the Internet on my PC. Alot of people say not to go Quad for gaming, but wouln't it be more future proof?. Plus on Newegg the E6850 is $199.99 and the Q6600 is $189.99 so it makes it harder to pick(remember i dont OC)

Also, i plan to upgrade my CPU without reinstalling my OS(should be fine)

Also, should i take my mobo out of the case to install it? I dont have all the standoffs on my mobo so it would probably ben to much, so if i do take it out i will probably put it on a cardboard box or somthing.

Also FYI my 680i SLi board doesn't support the 45nm CPUs so don't reccomend any of those please.

The reason why a 6850 might be better than 6600 is because it has a higher stock clock speed. At the moment. clock speed still makes a difference. Thast why so many people go to great lengths to overclock their cpus. You could try and overclock your 4400 before deciding to purchase a new CPU. Quad core will probably become more significant as time goes by, but by the time it does, Q6600s will probably be obsolete.

So should i upgrade my mobo then to support the 45nm Quads?(if the Q6600 is going to be obsolete)

If you want something that will be reasonably current till next summer, then get a motherboard that can support 45nm + a 3Ghz 45nm like the e8400 which can easily be overclocked to 3.6GHz or the 45nm q9450 which can easily be overclocked to 3GHz. There is no geting away from obsoletion. The rule I suppose is that the more you spend, the more futureproofing you get. But in the world of computers, that still isnt too long. Think of 2yrs as a maximum.

i got the E6850 over the Q6600 because i didnt plan on overclocking. at stock speed the E6850 will outperform the Q6600

Thats true, but what about the Q6700? Its faster then the Q6600 but still slower then the E6850. But then agian it has 4 cores.

Quad Core is worthless right now. For example, there will be insignifant/no benefits to a Quad-Core that has the same clock speed as a Duo Core.

So would a E6850 at 3.0Ghz be better then a Q6700 at 2.66Ghz?(cause i dont OC). i would get a Core 2 Extreme(they have both speed and 4 cores) but they are still way to expensive.

You hit the nail on the head there, my friend. Most QCs don't go over 3GHz anyway. And as you said, only the QC-E have those kind of speeds, but are vastly overpriced.

Why are you unwilling to overclock?

Why don't you overclock? If you're getting rid of the E4400 anyways, you might as well try overclocking b/c you have nothing to lose (it's also quite rare to destroy a CPU by mild overclocking).

dont count out quad core ;) it has other advantages, if your just looking for gains in gaming stick with a dual core. if you don't want to OC get the highest clocked dual core you can. BTW intel's new quads are on there way, so expect the current Q series to drop in price soon.

I say chill out, your rig is fine, esp. if you don't OC. ^ Check the manufacturer website, sometimes it will with a BIOS flash.

Ya, i would get the Quad Core because sooner or later games will use muliple cores. But since i dont OC i dont know if its worth it or not. I could get a Quad core but i dont know how good the performace will increase at stock clocks.

if you dont have a 45nm board dont bother with quad core, a 65nm quad like the Q6600 is just not any faster on an un-optomized piece of software. If you want a quad get one that is 45nm. PLus if its for gaming dont bother dude, These days the cpu plays a much smaller role in gaming.

the 680i supports 45nm CPUs with a bios update, so get the update, and buy an e8400 or e8500. But it is a waste if you don't OC, that e4400 with an OC can reach really good speeds, and with your chipset it should be a breeze.

IMO, its totally worth it. Good hardware never hurt anybody. I agree about the quad core processors. Apparently the next COD game is going to have some special acvantage if you have a quad core processor, so it will be good for gaming. I've heard that having a fourth core is basically useless, but i doubt it will stay that way.

if you want to buy a motherboard 45nm. think p5q is good with reasonable price
