i would say hold out because yes the I5 is better but in my oppinion it's not worth the cost of the motherboard and the cpu right now so just wait a year and see what the next range of ivy bridge brings.

I pressume you're building this for gameing as well and cpus factor into gameing but not near as much as a gpu and that is alos another reason i wouldn't upgrade because you allready have a decent one.

Eh I would hold out, you already have capable hardware for the time being. I just did a new i5 Build but thats because my old computer was garbage and I didn't want to wait anymore.

No not at all. I would hold on to that system till DDR4 and PCI-E 3.0 become the standard. That processor and ram are no bottleneck what so ever to gaming at the moment... well not one worth buying a new system over. 1 1/2 years then buy a new PC.

So you'd have to buy and new cpu, ram and mobo, and most games would see next to no difference.

Not worth it.

like others said not worth it Phenom ii 965 is already a decent quad core Cpu and you would notice no different . Even with cpu bound games ( which are few nowdays) though the i5 will be faster you wont notice the difference between 60fps and 80fps with your sli 460

Im seeing a lot of these posts around lately. The Phenom 955 or 965 is still a very good CPU. It can run any game thesedays. If you want to upgrade though, then id wait for the next gen CPUs

personally, i wait as long a possible, until the current machine cannot do what i need it to do accpetabley (spelling>?). i went from my P3 700mhz to my AMD 3500+ because the P3 couldnt run HD video. i went from the AMD 3500+ to a core 2 E6400 because the AMD couldnt cope with video editing. i went from the e6400 to an i7 930 because the e6400 would take a week to render HD video edits (the i7 takes onyl a few hours). find a reason=upgrade. no reason to upgrade=better stuff always on the horizon

This. His 460 sli and AMD 965 gets more than 60fps in most games at 1080p. I have the same CPU, and I had a GTX 460 sli setup up about a year ago.. and it ripped through most games I threw at it.

stick with the cpu unless you have a reason to upgrade. I had a 955 BE as well but upgraded to core i7 because i mainly played RTS games and wanted 100% smooth playback, even in the most hectic battles. Most people who play RTS games though will be happy with the level of performance the 955 gives you, so not really any reason to upgrade, since most games other than RTS depend on the graphics card much more than the cpu. But i will add that encoding videos on a core i7 is blazing fast :D

The performance increase will be significant in general computer use and in any game which makes use of CPU horsepower, such as RTS and Sandbox games. In GPU heavy games such as Crysis2 then the extra CPU power won't matter.

Don't upgrade to an i5 45nm or even 32nm quad as you will see not much difference in performance. Wait till ivy bridge comes out and get an i7. Ivy bridge is only less then a month away.
