Within the next few months, i am hoping to be upgrading my system. I am looking at upgrading my motherboard to an AM3 system with an AMD Phenom II X4 965 3.4GHz and 4GB DDR3 1600MHz RAM. I plan on re-using my hard drive and graphics card, but further down the line, I would like to upgrade to an AMD HD5850 card

Question 1) Now, would my PSU be able to handle these new parts?

Question 2) I currently have an OCZ Stealthxtreme 600W PSU. It has two 4-pin CPU connectors, would I be able to just use them both in an 8-Pin CPU socket?

Question 3) As for graphics, i have two 6-pin PCI-E connectors, newer cards need both 6-pin and 8-pin connectors. Do these cards come with 8-pin adaptors?

please answer all the questions if you can.

If it's not some Chinese with-the-case PSU, I think that it will do just fine :)

HD 5850 doesn't require a 8-pin connector, only two 6-pin connectors.

It's a 4+4 connector, so yes, you can use both 4-pin connectors to use in the 8-pin socket for the CPU.

This is your power supply, right?

I run a similar system on the same PSU (OCZ 600W StealthXStream) with a Phenom II 955 & HD4890 and it's never given me a problem, it's been a very stable piece of kit for me. The thing that I did find strange though is that mine has both 6 pin & 6+2 pin PCI-e cables yet you mentioned that wasn't the case with yours?

Alas, good luck with the build!

ok, changing the subject a bit here, but ive looked at the AMD website and it says that the HD5870 requires a HD monitor. However i have a 19inch HP monitor with a resolution of 1440x900. Would that be considered a "HD" monitor? if not then I sure hope AMD dont expect me to pay for one of their cards on top of buying a new monitor.

Considering only the highest power products needs anything over 500 watts you will be fine. In-fact most newer products see HUGE cuts in power usage after a few revisions. For example, look at how many Watts a P4 consumes compared to a Core2Duo.

If THIS works, then you should be fine.
