um.... there is a huge difference between the overall sales of PC gaming vs. Console gaming. And I don't believe consoles spit out carbon copies of the same titles. Granted the Madden games, as well as most sports games, don't really add much to their yearly releases but there's a lot more to play than just sports games.
It just seems like most PC gamers are playing MMO. WOW or Everquest are usually what PC gamers say that they're playing. And now Windows is releasing Xbox titles for the PC. So it just seems like the best thing PC gaming has going for it is MMO.

I only play pc games but i have never played a single MMO, they just dont appeal to me, plus WOW is a game you must pay for every month, that alone puts it on my not to buy list.
I play a lot of FPS, RTS and some RPG games on the PC.
And the pc is not dyeing, if pc gaming died console gaming died, its all connected in one way or the other. The only games i see that should be on a console is fighting games, the rest is best on a pc, plus even fighting games can be played very nicely on a pc.
I do not believe MMOs affect PC gaming as a whole but are doing so in part. The problem is big corporations only see profits vs expenditures and not anything else. Of course that is what business's do, make money.
MMO's have the potential to make a company millions of dollars a month while only costing a fraction of that to maintain and run so the appeal for companies to make them is very high. To give you an example WoW has 6 million players, each paying an average of 14.99 USD a month. ($14.99 x 6,000,000 is $89,940,000 per month of revenue.)
So while MMO's aren't keeping PC gaming alive, they have become a focal point of many developers and publishers.

Regarding PC gaming dying - Hell no. If anything, it's getting stronger. More people have pc's than ever before so it's natural to want to integrate gaming into something you already have. Console gaming and pc gaming are two, totally different animals. I mean do they make nintendos, sega genesis, Neo-Geo games anymore? No. Can you play those old cartridges on current consoles? No. Can I still play all my old pc games on my new pc? Yes. I think pc gamers are just a more selective bunch than those that are pure console and we demand more from our games.
To the Effect that WoW has - I do think WoW is actually helping the future of pc gaming. It's bringing people into the market that probably wouldn't have been playing an MMO or maybe even a pc game in the first place. Eventually those people will want something more from their games and they'll move on from WoW to something else that's piqued their interest.
A better question might be "Would PC gaming be better off without WoW?", and I think the answer would probably be "Yes".BornGamer

Yes you're exactly right...
Richard Garriot had an article in PC Gamer about how before UO came out, nobody thought people would play the game. After it was succesful and EQ was ready to launch, the people at UO assumed that their customer base would flock to EQ. There was a very minimal hit to the amount of UO customers and the people at EQ picked up a ton of customers.
For years they have theorized that the "MMO Ceiling" had been hit but every time a new MMO launches it only grows. WoW is responsible for many people becoming "PC gamers" even though WoW is the only game they play. It does nothing to the PC as a system. If anything, WoW has an effect on the MMO genre but even that is minimal.
People will play whatever kind of games they like. If WoW died, there would be a lot of people wanting to play WoW but nobody from the CS or BF2 crowd would be effected in the least.
Yes.
I think I'm the first to say this, but the PC AIN"T gettin' stronger...
Every good PC game you might bring up these days are also available for cosoles gamers, MMORPG is pretty much the only thing keepin' alot of gamers near their PC.
FPS games are almost always out for either PS3 or XBOX 360.
RPG...please don't remind me of that, there is NO new RPG games...Loki was pretty much the last chance to save us but...I'm not sure we can call that RPG.
RTS is well, there are good games but still, PC dont rule over here as well.
It will take more time but, anything that concerns gaming, and we are talking about games, will be ruled by consoles.
I like the PC but I ain't gonne lie to myself...the facts are here, you just have to search for them.
I can't believe you just asked this question in a PC gaming forum of which most posters are anti-WOW.
There are plenty of better MMOs out there...much much cheaper ones. WOW just has appeal. Take away the appeal, and people will always find somewhere else (a different MMO) to spend their time.
wow does not make or break PC gaming not by a long shot. in fact the biggest grossing franchise i can recall in recent memory prior to wow was the sims, and that did not make or break PC gaming. pc gaming is the bleeding edge for the FPS, and MMO genres. the keyboard and mouse rule the controller.
you can argue that consoles have more titles releasing (they do) but that doesnt make the market. its the fact that new tech is truly tested on PCs, which have a shorter life cycle than consoles do (avg for a high end pc is what 2 years? a console avgs 4-5) the gaming technologies that are desgined for the bleeding edge of PCs is what the console makers put into thier machines. it stands to agrue that pc gaming in a way supports console gaming. i would even go so far as to say it has a direct impact with makers such as NIVIDIA placing their chips in consoles. in shortas long as the bleeding edge is designed for the PC (bioshock, crysis for recent exmaples) a fanbase will exist which will create a market.
one game especially a game like wow which wasnt anywhere near the bleeding edge (*cough* WC3 engine *cough*) does not define an industry.
Yes.

*SIGH* Are we gonna go through this again? This is like the zillionth topic about this "PC gaming isdying" thing that consolekids have so muchinterest in.
Short answer: No, it's not dying. It's thriving and improving asusual.
Long answer: No, in fact, your topic pretty much shouts out the narrowness of your knowledge regarding PC gaming in general.W.O.W. and PC gaming is notthe same,it never was and never will be.Consoles are NOT competition for PCs, so why would you evencare? Obviously, you don't even play PC games, so again, whymust you ask?
I don't play consoles, I don't care about consoles and consolegames, but I don'tgo to console forums and post topics like "Is Sony dying because Xbox 360 and Wii is outselling the PS3?".
Your argument that console games are outselling PC games is pointless because the two aren't interconnected. A sell for an Xbox 360 game for exampleis NOT a loss for the PC market, and vice versa. Plus, the type of games between the two gaming systems are quite different... with consoles catering to fast, action-packed gameswhile strategy games almost exclusivelyPC only. There are a lot of of cross-over titles in between too. Consoles are not competition for PCs. You buy consoles to play, period. You buy a PC to play, work, do research, edit pictures, arrange music, compose stuff, communicate with others, download/upload files, etc....
Understand, you'll never in your lifetime actually NEED a console, but in today's world, a PC is almost a necessity if you want to be competitive in the workplace. For as long asthere are PCs, there will be games for PCs, online or not.
Yes.

It just seems like most PC gamers are playing MMO. WOW or Everquest are usually what PC gamers say that they're playing. And now Windows is releasing Xbox titles for the PC. So it just seems like the best thing PC gaming has going for it is MMO.
From Xfire.com (see below). Only two MMOs on there: WoW and Guild Wars. So, what were you saying about how PC gaming might be dying if it wasn't for MMOs?
Granted, I know that not everyone uses Xfire, but at least it shows a good enough portion of the population and whata percentage of the people are playing. Some MMOs (like WoW) appeal to more then just the average to hardcore gamer. They can also appeal to people that haven't played before because the games are simple and easy to follow - plus you can meet other people via online game time.
I find that MMOs are shallow and boring to me, so I don't play them. I get more entertainment out of blowing stuff up or having to actually think about what I'm doing in RTS games (though I don't play them as much as I used to).
So there you have it....in my opinion PC gaming is not on the verge of dying nor will it ever die.

So, if a game goes on multiple platforms, only the PC market takes a hit from it? I dont get your point. Whats the disadvantage on having, for instance, BIOSHOCK on PC and on the 360? I read on the forums that a lot of people that have a 360 and a computer, bought the PC version becuase it looked better

The PC's dont rule on the RTS genre??? Were have you been the last couple of years??? If I remember correctly, RTS games like C&C, Dune, CoH could only be played EXCLUSIVELY on PC until recently. Not to mention the new ones like World in Conflict. In fact, the only recent RTS game that Ive seen to go multiplatform is C&C 3

To be honest, I find it difficult to see that the gaming world is dominated by consoles. The PC was and still is the platform that pushes the envelope when it comes to new technologies. Consoles only adapt the technology from the PC for the particular purpose of gaming.
And to the OP: Pc gaming will be ok without WOW

With my narrow span of knowledge aside, let me just say that I know that the sales number of consoles can and will affect the PC gaming industry especially if the current trend continues. There are 3 major consoles that have been in high demand since it's release. More gamers are playing on consoles than PC's and if the PC gaming industry can't compete(by this I mean making a decent profit) then it is possible that the only PC games released will be titles that were ported from consoles. Similar to how I mentioned earlier that Windows is releasing Xbox 360 games for the PC. The majority of PC gamers, who play games exclusive to PC's, are playing the MMO games. If the number of gamers drops significantly then I personally don't think that anymore of these games will be made. And I'm not saying that the number will drop, just saying hypothetically.
And yes everyone needs a PC to work. But we're not talking about working. My question is basically asking could the PC gaming industry have survived w/o it's most successful "PC ONLY" game. And of course since everyone has a computer it would be more sensible to buy a "console released" game for your computer as oppose to buying an expensive console. But real gamers want to play all the great games that coming out. Especially whenever a "new generation" of gaming is introduced.
No, I think WoW is actually helping PC gaming. Thousands of kids who will get jobs will want to buy their own pcs to be able to play the cool games to offer for the PC. Blizzard always talk about 8 million people worldwide playing WoW, 2 million are in the US. They dont say how many decide to quit. Just in the US, lets say there is 2.5 million accounts including inactive ones. 500,000 kids who played WoW may have turned into PC gamers. Not all 500,000 kids would have became pc gamers, but if you were to cut the number down by 10 or 20 % you will see an increase customer base for PC gaming market.
Long answer to this question but no PC gaming will continue to thrive.
Hmmm....
The more and more that I think about "Is PC gaming dead?", the more and more I come to the conclusion that PC gaming isn't dying...but perhaps it's the current generation ofpeople that are becoming more and more lazy.
You actually have to learn a some basic knowledge to get the best out of your PC (driver updates, what kind of RAM your MB can use, what type of video card your MB supports, etc...), but with consoles, you just plug and play.
Plug and play; takes absolutely no brain power to perform those two acts - only time you use your brain is when the game is actually going. For Heaven's sake you might have to actually think to get a game to function on your PC before you play it.
As for the people getting lazier comment above, you can apply that to MMOs as well. Any MMO that I've actually tried to play, they all do the same thing with different end results - grind and kill (sometimes you can advance by yourself, but usually you have to group to kill). There is very little thinking involved for MMOs that I have seen.
So how about everyone gets a little less lazy and learn a few basic things about PCs instead of trying to bash them with the lines like:
If people want to talk about things like that listed above, back up what you have to say with facts and not just your own opinion. As for any comments in this post, they are based off of my thoughts and my opinions from what I've seen and experienced. Take them as you will....

Actually jpkustra, you can play old cartridge games on the new consoles, you just need to download them for a nominal fee.
I believe that PC exclusive gaming. in a word, is dying. New and good games alike are more often now to be put on consoles first, then ported to PC and in a very crappy manner I may add. Take The Darkness for instance, the game looked sweet as hell and it was a first person shooter. Now usually companies always make first person shooters for PC, but this one? No, it was not made for PC and I was disappointed because it even recieved good ratings. Lest we forget the ever-popular Gears of War, it'll be months now before it comes out for PC, but 360 has had it for a very long time now. But there is a shining ray of hope on the horizon; games like Crysis, which will only be on the PC, are awaiting our eager sticky hands. I love companies that still believe that PC is the evolution of gaming.

That's one major reason why PC gaming will NEVER die.
It's the only real gaming system that allows low budget developers to make a name for themselves through original and creative games. Low-budget games DO NOT show up on consoles.
