Since, I started have disk check errors and random lockups I thought my main Hard Drive is dying, so I decided to try something new and pick up 120GB OCZ SSD drive. I was quite surprised to see my Windows boot up in like 5-7 seconds the first time. Things load instantly. At first I really didn't think that it was worth it because it costs more and you could get a much larger HD space getting a traditional HD but now with my new SSD games are loading fast, I think my perception might have changed.

So, is SSD's really worth it?

And is it true once you go SSD's you never go back? :P

if you have extra cash to blow... otherwise no. Who cares about Windows loading time? Game loading time is overrated. It's maybe 10% increase tops. Applications are better.

Not worth it at current prices.

ideally you want a combination of SSD and mechanical. You want to try to minimize writes to the ssd. Use it for the OS, mechanical for everything else where you can.

I would say they are worth it. Still a luxury item, but its rather nice.

The entire OS (if you install it on the SSD) just runs snappier. You end up shaving off 0.2 and 0.3 seconds here and there for many basic tasks - which might not seem like alot - but it really adds up and improves the entire usage experience.

I certainly think is worth it for boot drives, your system overall is snappier. My ssd+mobo setup is rather slow in comparison, but in hindsight I still think is worth shaving seconds here and there, my laptop is half a second slower in doing anything like opening a basic doc. The best part is that it doesnt have that sluggish wind up that hdd does when they idle.

I leave my PC on 24/7 although I have sleep enabled. So an SSD isn't essential for me. The SSD's bang for the buck isn't quite there for me yet.

I bought the Kingston V200 SSD for dirt cheap, to see Windows boot in under 15 seconds (fully usable) is insane, but still a total luxury item

If you can afford it, it's a nice addition. It's something that you should only really get when you're happy with the rest of your computer - Having a decent GPU, processor and hard drive is your first stop.

For games only: Absolutely not worth it.

For everything - booting, programs etc: Sure!

My reason for getting an SSD was because I liked the idea of everything booting within a matter of moments, not even seconds anymore. But over time I've kinda been looking at my rig and honestly, I could go back to just a hard drive. Of course I'll still keep my SSD because I am used to it, but you're really only saving a little bit of waiting time. I mean, are we all rushed nowadays?

The most noticeable change for me was the Windows startup duration. It went from around 45 seconds down to 24. All my programs open up really quick as well. So, if you have the cash and need that extra time of your life saved, go for it. Otherwise, just wait until SSDs drop to current hard drive prices.

Edit: Also, solid state drives are not a neccessity for beastly rigs. That's my opinion. With crazy hardware, you can still run everything perfectly fine with a 7200RPM SATA3 hard drive. SSDs really only cut loading times. They don't enhanced graphics or anything like that.

Mechanical drives are for file servers only.

All my computers have an SSD only for local storage. My primary data storage is my file server. Literally the best option possible.

SSDs offer the single greatest performance boost in any machine, so long as you are not running XP.

A hardcore gamer should care a lot more about their GPU than having a SSD or lots of RAM. Only 4gb of RAM or no SSD is nothing compared to having a lackluster GPU.

Why would hardcore gamers care more about loading times than lag spikes and lower fps when actually playing the game?

For a laptop, they are waaaay more than just a luxury item. There's no moving parts which saves battery and you don't have to worry about magnets or metal detectors. And since you typically turn your laptop on and off more frequently than you would a desktop, the boot up time certainly adds up.

He plays on the lowest possible settings even though he has a good graphics card. He thinks copying the "pROZ" settings will make him good at games...

I think SSDs are worth it if you reboot your PC a lot, since they speed up that process a ton. The OS feels much snappier and any programs installed on it are more responsive. I think it's a good item to add to your system once you're happy with the rest.

I bought a small capacity 60GB SDD solely for Windows 7 and it was totally worth it. I boot into Windows and all my start up apps are running instantly. I am thinking of getting another one since they are getting under $1 per GB but honestly game loading times are not unbearable like they are on consoles.

What about partitioning the HDD into smaller drives and cloning the partition you want?

Don't but OCZ solid state drives, I hear nothing but bad things about them. And I had an OCZ PSU, and it just stopped working after 6 months.

Well with Acronis you just need to make sure you OS is not larger then your SSD... which makes sense. Sounds like clonezilla is not that good...
