Constant Crashes, refusing to log in all the time, long game loading times, Steam is becoming a nightmare.

I can't log in without problems, right now I'm having issues, because every time i try to log in, it just either takes 2 hours and then says it can't connect, or crashes when it starts.

Maybe you've got a virus? That or try reinstalling Steam. I had a lot of issues when Steam first came out and when Windows 7 RC was new, but they've ironed out pretty much everything since then.

Close steam. Go to your directory and delete/move the clientregistry.blob Reopen Steam and you shouldn't really have many issues. Could also be a problem with outdated hardware. I remember installing steam on some old pc's/laptops a while back and it failed horribly.

Steam is NOT causing that issue, after many many years I have not ever had a problem. Scan your PC for a Virus or Spyware

Are you guys forgetting how bad it was when 1.6 went public?? Also some other times when it hit some rough patches in performances, I guess when you dont feel it all the problems go away. O well I guess it runs okay on mines, are you having problems with a game or just the overall client. Not enough ram for the hungry monster, hmm delete it/clean registry and a good clean install.

Deleting system 32 should clear that right up.

But seriously, i have no problems with steam, sometimes a little lag but works great, maybe its your connection/computer...

You can try deleting boot.ini too, that should help.

The only problem I have found with Steam is I just realised I haven't backed up. When I went to backup my games, it said something like 365gb. I have delayed doing it now, thinking how long that will take and how many DVD's will be used. Might have to go and pickup and external HDD to make things a bit easier.
Steam does crash occasionally (very rare), but what PC Windows program doesn't crash from time to time? I just wish they would update the interface to suit this generation with Windows 7. It still looks like a Windows 98 interface.

It is a horrible application, but it works. It's horrible because it uses IE and IE is extremely slow compared to most browsers but Valve doesn't want to change that because IE is already included in the Windows and users don't have to download anything, but....while users download Steam from the "internet" can't they also make it as their own standalone browser platform? I doubt that anyone would mind another 1,2 maybe 4 mbs included in that Steam exe, they download tenths of gigs. Anyway, it works, but it being slow isn't really comfortable, still, it's far from a great application, but Steam as a service is superb.

Steam hasn't ever given me any problems. I have only one qualm with it and that is having to be online even to play single player. But as I mostly play stuff like CS and Ricochet, thats not much of a problem.

If you have a good and fast enough internet connection, you don't need to backup, as you can just download the game again.

This. It's the cleanest, fastest version of DRM we're going to get for a long while. Far better than Ubi Sucks' new save game server idea (admittedly a good idea, but their execution will no doubt be wretched). Plus the amazing deals we've been getting recently make the occasional headache worth it (all X-Coms for two bucks? Hell yeah!). PS: It's probably that your computer isn't powerful enough. On my second PC, with 1GB SDRAM, a P4 HT @ 3.06 and a 256MB 5700LE, Steam runs like crap. But that's your fault for having a POS rig, not Steam's problem.

30mb of RAM for an application that doesn't do anything remarkable, it's based on internet explorer, has an endless number of bugs and is slow?

Aside from programing some texas hold'em AI, and simple crap like that in my high school computer classes, no I haven't written programs.

Bloated in the sense that it can never run silently in the background; always popping up in the corners of my games, always pop-up advertisements when quiting a game, messages of the day, etc etc.

Oh, and I have 3 games now - I just pre-ordered BF:BC2 through steam.

I have about 30 games on my STEAM account, and for the most part run fine. ...BUT I have had several issues with games not running properly after the initial install...i.e. FarCry 2, Crysis, Crysis Warhead and Bioshock.

I was able to correct the problems with FC 2, but am still having issues with the others. The thing that bothers me the most is STEAM's on-line tech support is slow at best. Takes as long as 7-10 days before receiving a e-mail response back from them after submitting your problem to them and there is no phone supports to use. In almost all cases they just give you a reference link to contact third party support for game problems.

I still believe it's a great service because it's convenient, fast and one can find some good deals...but for me, after this last episode of games not installing correctly and having to jump through hoops to get a fix, I'm probably done with STEAM....:(

Not when your in Australia though. We have pretty limited internet. I'm on 120gb plan, but that is 60gb peak and then 60gb offpeak (2am to 8am). No other country in the world comes close to as bad as Australia regarding internet services.

Great way to narrow your scope there. :)

Here is the parent article of the article you linked.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_bloat

Nice try though.

"Software bloat is a term used to describe the tendency of newer computer programs to have a larger installation footprint, or have many unnecessary features that are not used by end users, or just generally use more system resources than necessary, while offering little or no benefit to its users."

How could it be bloated? Running it with 103 games (don't ask),,,,and when I go to task manager, it is using up around 9,000k of memory and resources. I have seen virus programs use up more resources. The advertising popus can be disabled in the settings. The speed of the downloads come down to how you select the sedrver location in your settings.
I am really just hoping they make it look better, without having to use more resources. There is one thing that hates steam, he's called my visa card.
Loved the deals that Steam does, like I just got Phsychonauts for $2, I dare someone to walkin to a retail store and ask for a $2 game. Pricing is set by the developers and publishers, not by Steam. Steam is not the reason companies like 2K games hate Australia, thus charging stupid pricing. Then again who knows, maybe EB games have paid 2K to rise Steam pricing so they can have a chance selling the retail copies. Like MW2 on Steam for $90 AUS, come on, I got the retail for only $79 AUS. Pricing needs to be fixed on Steam.
