of which steam does not apply... it doesn't do anything that isn't useful to the vast majority of the install base... all your complaints can be turned off with a simple settings adjustment... bloated... no... not it's not.

Maybe, but it applies in my case. Also running in offline defeats the purpose of steam at all. I have my opinion, you have yours. /argument, and I'm done in this thread.

Oh, and stop spamming ellipses, please.

The fact remains that you don't know the proper definition of bloated, steam is not bloated by any stretch of the imagination...

I proved to you that steam isn't bloated in the coding sense (it uses 30MB of memory and is extremely fast), you then claimed it's bloated in the feature sense - steam has 3 features, to sell games, to launch games, and to connect players in the steam community. The first two 100% of steam users use, the last the vast majoirty of steam users use. All your complaints (having the steam community show in the bottom of the screen for literally 3 seconds when starting a game, the second advertising new sales and new software when steam starts in a window), both of these features can be turned off in settings.

Please explain to me your opinion on how it is bloated...

oh... and I'll use all the ellipses I want...

I've been on Steam since it's release. Never had any major problems, and 1 or 2 minor ones over the years... if that.

The only problem I have with steam is that it looks like ass.

I like the way gog.com works much better. Particularly the way they basically give you a collecting game shelf to sort your games in. If I could have something like that in Steam I would never buy a hardcopy PC game again.

And before someone screams that they are just fine with steam I would like to point out that this is only my opinion on it and having over 70 games on steam I feel that I at least should be allowed to voice my opinion on it.

Well I don't really have a problem with the skin itself more with the way steam lists my games. It feels effective and fast but not really good looking.

I like the way gog.com gives you an option to basically show of the games you have in a virtual shelf with the original boxart to look at while at the same time give you the option to list the games like steam does. I also like how you can sort the games you've bought in your virtual shelf at gog.com however you want which I would like to do in steam.

What I'm trying to say is that I think steam is fast, effective but cold looking. I would like some more personality in it.

Yeah I often feel like Steam doesn't have ENOUGH features, mainly interface ones. :P I'll admit when I first got half life I've had major problems with steams. I would get messages such as "You have to own this game before you can play it." Thinking there was just something wrongs with the CDs or something, I bought it again from a different store. If you are really having problems with Steam you must try the Steam forums. They're nice, friendly, and open minded. The polar opposite of Steam cultists that lurk all the other forums on the internet.

They could offer some customization for your game database, they really seem to improve and a horribly slow rate. It took them years to include a feature to display how much you played your games, people wanted this since Xfire was released, but they released it just a few months ago. And it being fast...that's the last thing I'd say about Steam :P the interface is really slow, because of IE ( a really slow browser).

He may as well, it seems like the fanboyism in this thread is too great not to. Steam is awesome, but most of the arguments of "steam is not buggy because it's never bugged out for me" are just ridiculous. Steam has a LOT of problems, go check out the support site. I could go on and on about all the problems I've dealt with (learned all about the great utility of the console from steam) but what's the point if the responses I get are going to be "the problem is on your end., steam is always perfect"

And why are we praising steam because it's the "best" DRM out there... GOG has the best DRM - NONE.

/rant

Edit to add that I think the TC's problems are on his end, probably to do with driver issues/win7 if installed/virus/ fragmented hdd, ect. and I would try things that have been posted here and google is your friend. IMO - format and reinstall solves every problem albeit the most annoying solution.

Don't use steam. The best digital distribution system is one that gives you the game and nothing else. Steam is a load of ****. Nothing is better than simply installing a game and all its files on your C-drive and doing whatever you please with it, no steam strings attached.

Constant Crashes, refusing to log in all the time, long game loading times, Steam is becoming a nightmare.

I can't log in without problems, right now I'm having issues, because every time i try to log in, it just either takes 2 hours and then says it can't connect, or crashes when it starts.

Resistance_Kid
Sorry to say your alone on this one. Steam has never failed me in the 3-4 years I have been using it.

Steam is a way to play your games and stay connected with your friends all at once. Very few other applications do that, and if you wanted to keep up with your friends, you would have to install another application (such as Xfire or an instant messaging proram) anyways. As far as I'm concerned, not having to install that one extra application to speak with them online is just another burden I don't have to put up with. Having it all-in-one is quite nice, and I've rarely had problems with Steam except for on a few occassions. It's about as rock solid as they come and will only continue to grow and improve.

Yes, the best DRM is one that doesn't exist... but realistically that just isn't going to happen. Software companies aren't jumping ship on piracy control any time soon, DRM is only getting more and more restrictive, steam is DRM that works, and is un-obtrusive. In an era of limited installs (yes I know that some companies force that on even some steam titles), steamworks DRM is a breath of fresh air.

If you need to stay connected to online gaming buddies, it's much better to have something like GFWL that seamlessly integrates itself into your games, rather than you needing to work your games around steam. Steam is too intrusive for my tastes.

Guess i'm a Fanboy then. Seeing how Steam hasnt caused me problems. Maybe i'm a Dirt 2 fan too then, cause that hasn't errored out either.. @ Renzor. I'm under the belief that usually when many many people have a problem accomplishing something without an error of some kind it's normally caused by user error. If for whatever reason a person who has the same specs (or close enough to them) and Yet i'm able to run/use steam without any problems for 5 years, only to have someone else with the same build come along and go "D= my steam games lag" it's usually got somethign to do with them not installing Drivers propperly, or having done something, at sometime when they decided they'd do something that they're not too sure about, only to cause errors in the future. I'd estimate at least half (having gone through and actually looked at some of the errors and problems) of the things people B**ch about on on the stea support page are caused by A.) Drivers. B.) Not being administrator. or C.) someone just being totally lost with what they're doing. These things are NOT steam's fault, Is steam supposed to update your hardware too now? People make things on PC too easy, to the point where there's a large gathering of....people that screw things up themselves, and look for something to blame. Said people gather on the Steam Support Website.

How horrible is your PC anyway? I can run Steam just fine on my old 3.0ghz single core, 1gb RAM, Nvidia 9400GT. No crashes, no disconnections and no long loading times. Maybe its because your computer sucks, you have a virus, your internet connection sucks (I live in Australia and I don't have any problems) or maybe a combination of the three.
