hi. I was about to buy WOW today actually matey. its like £10 now!! Few questions:
1)Its only the original game with no upgrades/expansions etc...will this pose as a problem for online playing or what?
2)How much is the monthly fee?
3)Is it really THAT addictive????
4)Are the worlds really THAT beautiful?
5)Im getting a new PC in 2weeks, but my laptop will run this--would i be able to just reinstall on new PC and log into account without any issues or.....?
Also, i noticed in the player reviews, people are slating this game because it is "too addictive", i read it and was like....what??? People moan that games are crap and are now maoning because this one is too addictive??People like that pi** me the hell off. They are mainly moaning because they now "have no lives left because of WOW", im thinking----yes the game is MAKING you play....fools. They even went as far to give the game a bad rating because of it.
If anyone can answer the questions above, id be grateful.ta.

WoW can be addictive but only as much as any other game can be. The beauty of wow is that it appeals so so many play styles, whether you are casual or hardcore. I play for about 10 to 15 hours a week and manage just fine. I have made lots of friends and log on for a chat as much as i do to play. The fee is £8 a month or maybe 9, i forget lol. You don't need the expansion if you are new, it really only comes into play at around level 55.Frozzikiv now read another thread and people say guild wars is better!!!which 2 get? Stuff it ill get both if they are there :P

You pay them cash so you run around and grind all day ...
That's the bottom line and it totally sucks. WoW is such a shallow mmo, you can't do crap in that game.BounceDK
Â
Faults in your (cough) argument (cough)
1. It has the most "grind free" gameplay of any MMO on the market. It's the MMO that created the idea that quests should give more exp than killing creatures alone.
2. You have just as diverse and interesting tradeskills to develop as in any MMO (aside from EQ2). You don't have to fight at all if you don't want. There is tailoring, armorcrafting, jewelcrafting, cooking, skinning, enchanting, etc...
Â
So there is a whole boatload of gameplay in there that isn't "run around and grind all day" like you say.
Â
One tip, play a game for more than 15 minutes before you act like an expert.Â

Totally agree. I'll never understand this kind of comment about wow. One of the great things about it, probably the reason its so huge, is that you can pretty much play how you want. Don't wanna grind? then don't. I never found this a problem and still don't.[QUOTE="Johnny_Rock"][QUOTE="BounceDK"]You pay them cash so you run around and grind all day ...

1. It has the most "grind free" gameplay of 2. You have  1) Grind free? yea at first site, then the end-game comes and makes the grind last longer than the actual leveling process, everything about it becomes a grind, weather its tradeskills/PVP!!!/PvE/Pots. 2) Diverse Tradeskills? trying to oversell it I see, the tradeskills are the most shallow of any MMORPG, you can level one to full in a day or two, that being said most of the stuff isnt "trade" because A) nobody wants it , B) you can only craft the good stuff for yourself (Bound when created), tradeskills are really profitble like on other MMORPGs, only the gathering of materials earns you profit, in which case thats a boring "Run around the map 15x a day competing with everybody else on 20-min respawn Viens/Herbs. Please ... its Evercrack Mark II.

"it must be of some quality to get an overall 90%+ rating at most game sites. "
And players too. Make sure you mention that as well. Alot people will swear that it is all just a Blizzard conspiracy and it only got good rating becauase they paid them all off.
From this site alone, out of more then 34,000 votes, it averages a 9.2! I would assume it would have to be of some quality to get such a popular backing...
"you can level one to full in a day or two"Yea I'd like to add theres many guys like this in the WoW comminuty "If someone does something better than me he has no life, if someone is not as good as me hes a noob"
If you are a freak and play 24hrs a day and bankroll the profession with funds from another high lvl chracter. No way in hell can you max out a trade skill with a fresh character playing normal hours in a day or two.dnuggs40
"Other comments are not bashing but giving an alternate opinion--which is fine...but why come here and say its soooooooo rubbish when it obviously is not and you are the minority."
Believe me its not a minority opinion, if you read the WoW boards now they delete anything along the lines of "TBC was a disapointment" with 20+ pages of replies, watching people in the hardcore guilds begin to think "Whats the point" , playing it 2 years nearly every player u come across will say the same thing.
9.6 Rating 2 years ago, because it was "EverQuest" with slightly improved features and a very popular setting "Warcraft" the best RTS of the time.
Its just advice, I'm not bashing it, I played it for 2 years afterall, but mygod its gone even more linear and milkage than before.

Since no one actually decided to answer your questions, but for the most part just got into another (of the million) arguments as to "it sucks" vs. "no it doesn't" I'll see if I can answer your questions.
Â
1)Â You can do just fine without the expansion. There's plenty of content there (enough to have lasted over two years!)
2)Â The montly fee is $15 per month (in America). I'm not sure how much it is in other countries - but I'd wager it's less than the price of going to the movies.
3)Â It is addictive if you do not have discipline or willpower. Same as any other "addictive" substance.. though WoW doesn't give you lung or liver cancer (that we know of)
4)Â World of Warcraft is pretty overall. The thing is, it has a relatively low poly-count and what one would consider "sub-par graphics" for today's world. This helps it run on most any machine made since 2004. What Blizzard has done rather than make "good graphics" is that they made great art and design. The game is artistically pretty, overall.
5) You can run WoW on any PC you install it on - in fact, you don't even NEED to install it, you could just copy the game folder from one system to another, then make a shortcut to the launcher. You can log into your account with no issues on any system. It's very easy.Â
Â
I hope this helps.Â

Nice one fella...appreciate the long awaited response :D I was really geared up for getting this this morning--now after these comments--not so much. I kinda can relate to the guy that said-"2 years ago it was great", i was thinking to myself...2 years later....is it worth paying £10 a month for NOW. Can you unsubribe whenever you want then? If so...may try it for a month see how i like it...the games only ten pound now anywho.Ok , I will anwser I'l anwser yours seriosuly and the TC's Question: 1) You will be limited to playing alone for the most part, not many players between lvls 1-60 on most servers, the 60 dungeons (6-7) will never be used because they have been made pointless, so it really is expansions or nothing, unless you want to play a 1 player game. 2) about 8 Quid a month , gets cheaper with montly 3 / 6 / 12 options. 3) Unfortunatly yes, thos who think "Why bother" and that "Grind grind grind" is boring find it very hard to quit, me included. 4) No , outdated by a long shot, wasnt even top-notch 2 years ago, the theme I think is nice, its more cartooney yet realistic at the same time so to say, the animatiosna re smooth and the characters ... well have good charaterstics. 5) Yes, your CD Keys are saved online in your account, so you dont need to re-enter them ever. 6) Its addictive yet un-fuffiling, because the classes are rebalanced often, the gear is changed, and gear becomes obsolete, you end up spending 5-6 hour sessions in raid dungeons with like a 20% chance of actually getting an armour upgrade, in which case PvP is almost dead on the whide scale in outdoor PvP/Battlegrounds, and Arena is always dominated by the hardcore. @ TC Balanced? You call this Balance : Priest - Rivals DPS of a Mage/WArlock/Rogue , and adds incredible utility while DPSing. Paladin - is now the main Healbot (yea thats right a freakin Paladin main healing) because Shadow Priests are more worthwhile than Holy. Warriors - are the only "main tank class" because by blizzards logic, having 8/9 DPS classes, 4/9 Healing classes, and 1/9 Tanking classes is fair , and giving Paladins Tanking/Druids would hurt Warriors *rolls eyes* even though they can DPS nearly to a Rogues standard. Content? Theres lots of it sure, but its all the same, never changed "Kill 30 blah blah" "take 20 min trip to here to give my lucnh to X person" , "Grind Epic Raid Dungeon with same AI week after week" " Main Tank dies, there is no skill or ability that will save your 25 players, which gives you 20 min downtime, because its still using that out-of-date aggro system, the game is not remotly innovative. End of, I advice you not to jump on so late, I really do.hi. I was about to buy WOW today actually matey. its like £10 now!! Few questions:

That is just laughable. I'm not even going to touch the 20 minute respawns for herbs.....  even on the most crowded servers (like Stormrage) I have never had a problem mining or collecting ingredients.

Hehe it happens, its fun the first time, but when you reach the end-game, or start a new character and do it again, it because painfully obvious, also by the lack of thier support and development (Despite what anyone says) they are afraid to hotfix most things in fear of making more mistakes, the Servers cant handle PvP raids outdoors so everything is instanced (like Guild wars). Get it, play it through once, do the dungeons once or twice, but my advice for your own health, do not base the game on the first 30 lvls, because it changes dramatically, for the worse.hi. Please ... its Evercrack Mark II.
any MMO on the market. It's the MMO that created the idea that quests
should give more exp than killing creatures alone.
just as diverse and interesting tradeskills to develop as in any MMO
(aside from EQ2). You don't have to fight at all if you don't want.
There is tailoring, armorcrafting, jewelcrafting, cooking, skinning,
enchanting, etc...
Â
That is just laughable. I'm not even going to touch the 20 minute respawns for herbs.....  even on the most crowded servers (like Stormrage) I have never had a problem mining or collecting ingredients.
Â
BTW, Evercrack mark II is called EQ2. You have the wrong game.Â
lol no kiddin...Â

Ok the respawns in Azeroth were around 12-15 mins, the ones in outlands are less, because, of the small maps, and the speed of flying mounts, if you still think its hard to lvl professions 300+ in 2 days is hard (Providing you have the gathering) that is not my problem but the point is a week is enough for casual people, who spend theyre time playing doing that, the tradeskills are not used for profit, with the exception of 1-2 patterns and pots, the system is easy, un-fulling and very rarely gets upgraded.
Very clever with the EQ2 thing, diffevernt name, different univivers, same game.
btw, I bet your gonna laugh when I tell you the 8,000,000 players thing is a complete joke aswell? Dont be such a fan boy ffs.
Sorry for some typos, new keyboard :P
I agree that all you do really is grind away. However it does have it's great moments. The problem with WoW is that things take too long. This was alleviated with some dungeons in the bruning crusade which aren't quite as long. However it is a game that requires commitment. I'd say go with Guild Wars since you can play that anytime and no monthly fee!Unstoppable_1Yep, I'm now waiting for someone to come in here saying "Its easier than most MMORPGs" which was true in the first year, now its as long as any other, quite ironic, since the Blizzard North team quit before release, and EVERQUEST designers took over.
No, the more likely case is that you are a hater. This is evident by your blatent exaggerations, boiling game mechanics down to stupidity, and making utterly crazy acusations. Ya...lvl 1 to 60 in a day or 2...MAYBE if you played ever hour of the day and don't sleep...not to mention SKIP almost everything the game has to offer and do nothing but grind for XP. Who the hell in their right mind plays games like that?dnuggs40Sorry what? Proffesions in 1-2 days, not 1-60, blind hatred leads to bad reading.
[QUOTE="anandram"]hi. I was about to buy WOW today actually matey. its like £10 now!! Few questions:
1)Its only the original game with no upgrades/expansions etc...will this pose as a problem for online playing or what?
2)How much is the monthly fee?
3)Is it really THAT addictive????
4)Are the worlds really THAT beautiful?5)Im getting a new PC in 2weeks, but my laptop will run this--would i be able to just reinstall on new PC and log into account without any issues or.....?
Also, i noticed in the player reviews, people are slating this game because it is "too addictive", i read it and was like....what??? People moan that games are crap and are now maoning because this one is too addictive??People like that pi** me the hell off. They are mainly moaning because they now "have no lives left because of WOW", im thinking----yes the game is MAKING you play....fools. They even went as far to give the game a bad rating because of it.
If anyone can answer the questions above, id be grateful.ta.anandram
1. No, the expansion doesnt really come into effect until you get to level 58 (level 58 is when you can travel to the new area, Outland)
2. The monthly fee is about 15 dollars US per month if you pay monthly or use timecards, but reduces slightly if you subscribe for longer times. If you go the three-month plan its about 14 dollars, and six months its 13 dollars, etc.
3. *sigh* This is extremely debatable as to whether or not its addictive, but I dont think so. Its reallly the person that determines it, not the game. I myself can only play for 1-2 hours a time, and sometimes go days without playing. Why? Because I have other priorities in life and I like to hang out with real friends.
The real question here is whether or not you have an addictive personality. Did you ever buy a game you loved so much that you layed it 8 hours a day until the end? Do you have real friends and a job or school?Â
Basically, just budget your time and treat WoW as a game instead of an obligation and you wont get addicted.
4. Technically, the game engine is slightly dated when compared to a game like Guild Wars, but when compared to other real MMOs WoW is quite pretty and clean. Not only that, but the whole artistry is really neat and the environments and enemies are extremely creative.
5. WoW is very well optimized. Chances are that if you have a PC that was built in the past 2-3 years it should run fine, and if not an inexpensive memory upgrade will problably remedy your problems.
The addictiveness of WoW is a result of the player, not the game. So ask yourself this question: can I budget my time and treat the game as it was intended to be treated; as a game? Just take care of your other priorities in life, and then when your all done sit down at the end of the day, login, and relax for a couple hours by playing a nice game of WoW.
Anyone addicted to WoW has no one but themselves to blame: it is a pure psychological hurdle and anyone with a shred of self-respect and self-discipline can easily prevent or overcome an addiction.

Uh oh sounds like my got a martyr on our hands.
Nice one fella...appreciate the long awaited response :D
I was really geared up for getting this this morning--now after these comments--not so much. I kinda can relate to the guy that said-"2 years ago it was great", i was thinking to myself...2 years later....is it worth paying £10 a month for NOW. Can you unsubribe whenever you want then? If so...may try it for a month see how i like it...the games only ten pound now anywho.anandram
Â
Not a problem. I've been looking over the reponses here myself, and here's what it comes down to -
Â
You may like it, you may not. For 10 pounds, I'd say pick it up and do the first month. You can cancel anytime. If you like it, keep playing, if not.. hey, even a few hours of entertainment for 10 quid ain't a bad deal.
Â

Technically you have to be at least level 5 to even get a profession, and there's an additional level requirement for each tier after (10,20,35).2. You have just as diverse and interesting tradeskills to develop as in any MMO (aside from EQ2). You don't have to fight at all if you don't want. I guess you could say I do, because it changed so much, its not what it was when it was given that 9.6 rating I tell you that, I'm not exagurating anything, its what I have done and what is possible to anyone, and the develpment statements are all true, they dont know what to do with half the classes and PvP on a large scale is dying outside the arena. Problem is on every new MMORPG its flooded with WoW comparison, which is bad for the genre because it took many backwards steps, and I advice people to keep an open mind and not to base the genre purely on WoW in past/present and future.

Now that statement is waaay more constructive and makes alot more sense. While I don't agree with alot of it, to me it seems more reasonable. As far as your examples of zergin skills and such, again, they are only possible if you bankroll your toon or wait to you are already a high level. In either case, it is not possible for someone just starting out playing the game. Wether we disagree about the later aspects of the game, it's pretty safe to say most people will enjoy the game for at least a few months...if not more. Afterall, you played for two years, even if the entirety of your last year was a bore, you probally had great fun for the first one. It is by all means a fun game, and worth anyones time who is interested.

Well, that may be so but personally i dont care about all that. I play for fun, plain and simple. Like i keep saying, over and over, different people play for different reasons. I play to chat, meet people and enjoy the game. I don't bother raiding as people get nasty. I have many chars of various lvls and types and love em all.
This game like all others will be loved by some and hated by others. I can spend a good few hours playing Tag the undercity banker with friends. We all run into UC and see who can reach the banker 1st, great fun and not too serious. This is why i play. For people like me WoW is great.
I have lots of 25-30 chars, 2 lvl 60's and a 64 and still play and have fun.

I agree with him, It's just like any game you will really have to try it to see if you like it and seeing it isn't that much to buy it and you get the free month with it, just try it out. Every single game out there they have people who like it and dislike it so who would this game be any different.
There are just some people who will bash a game that they know overall is good because they personally think their opinions are godlike and if they don't like a game it must be the worst thing ever made.
Just try it for yourself and find out if you like it or not
Think if the monthly fee would be 1 dollar or free at all, the game would be swarming with brainless kids flaming you, the community would be horrible. A bit higher monthly fee keeps the community a bit more mature...acidbite
you must've skipped world of warcra... in fact, you must've never played a single mmo!!!Â
yeah, though - i'm fine with monthly fees in general... i spent around six thousand hours playing everquest, and around £450 ($8 or 900) on the game, expansions and fees included - which works out to like 80 pence per hour (about $1.50) - that's good value for money compared with most games... many games have a lifespan of around 15 hours before multiplayer is considered - and cost around £30
80p per hour vs £2 per hour
monthly fees are perfectly fine, if you're a serious or hardcore player - it's only when you're casual that there's a problem with cost effiiciency, but that's what guildwars is for...
