xp...........it rocksss............dont install vista...........it suckss..........how much ram u have ??tjdeep_2007
576 RAM!! And it is compatible with a motherboard that is 8 years old! That is why im getting a new computer!
hmm then dont install vista it needs atleast 1gb ram..............
tjdeep_2007
I told you I'm getting a new computer with 2 GB DDR RAM!
Getting a new PC without Vista is stupid, don't listen to people who say Vista sucks because most of them have never even had it on their PC. I did a poll not long ago and the majority who did not like Vista never even tried it. People heard tons of bad things about it after the "gotta-have-it-now" crowd ran out and got it at release. Every OS sucks at release, Vista is fine now. Don't believe the anti-hype, that is all it is, hype. And 2GB is plenty for Vista. I run Vista on my laptop and desktop with no issues at all, other than the Gears of War crap where you have to run as admin to start it. First problem I encountered with it.
Let me guess, you would suggest 4gb? But then he would have to install 64bit which does have some compatibility problems. Or would you have him install 3GB and ditch dual channel? This is pure ignorance, I doubt you have ever even seen Vista in person other than trolling around Best Buy's PC section.
2GB is fine, but nothing less.

Thanks for the tip off ! Is there a particular version of this "Vista" that I should buy? Basic? Premium? Supreme? Meat Lovers?

I am glad it works for you but there are still issues with it (granted its improved). The main reason I don't recommend it is that it offers nothing new of worthwhile. Perhaps to somethe Aero glass or ensuring DirectX10 compatibility is worth it but I guess I just dont want to hand over my cash to a company trying to exploit me (and im not anti microsoft since im a .net developer but I dont like being decieved)
vista is the way to go and here's why. vista is the new os for the future. it won't be long before everyone is using vista. xp is not the way to go. sure you can play games like half life 2 but you can do that with vista as well. almost every game i have tried works with vista. plus you got the new content with dx10. new effects, new lighting, all new stuff. i don't see how anyone would go with xp these days. sure, in the early beta days there were problems with vista. and even now there are a few problems. but with sp1 coming out soon. these will be fixed. to be honest, i have had very few problems with my games. and as a gamer this is what i am most concerned about. i can play my games and get the newest visuals with dx10 for games like crysis.. and there are new ones coming up every day... i am very happy with vista and i am sure you will be too.skyyfox1
Okay good....now that we've finished hugging, holding hands in the circle and telling each other "You're going to get Vista", can you please tell me what bloody version!! BASIC, PREMIUM, SUPREME or MEAT LOVERS.

He is buying a new PC anyway, at which time is the right time to buy Vista. You are right, there is nothing so great about it that it warrants running out and buying it for a current PC, but if you are buying a new one there is no reason any longer to skip Vista. Esp since most new PC's come with it installed. I build anyway, but if I were wiping my hard drive or getting a new one I would take the plunge for that as well. I have found Vista to be more stable than XP personally, that alone is worth it to me.

I have premium so would have to recommend that. The aero GUI is suppose to use your graphics card and less system memory than the normal GUI, it does not come with basic.

Thank you very much.
XP is better all the way, Vista downgrades your computer. Getting Vista now would be stupid, and DX10 is just not worth it right now and the hit on performance is so terrible. Personally, I think Vista might be the first Windows Opertaing System that comes to close to failure.hamidious
You've got my attention: What do you mean by downgrades exactly?
Does anyone know what that fellon was talking about when he said that Vista "downgrades" your computer? biggest_loser
farked if I know???
I dual boot so have the best of both worlds and look in all honesty if you are geting a new system get Vista.
With games there are maybe 2-4 frames a second difference on the same game (in XP's favour) but hey the same was said when XP came out after ME and 98, but would these same type of people now still prefer those OS's????
Lets face it, time moves on and some people are just stuck in the past and have to be carried kicking and screaming into the here and now. When XP came out it was in quite a bit worse shape than Vista was when it first came out, and has taken 5 years and a couple of service packs to be rock solid. The same will happen with Vista.
So go Vista for a new PC IMHO
If your getting a new PC just buy Vista (I gots Vista Ultimate, happy with it)
What you could do is make a partition on your hard drive XP/Vista.
Vista is not broken, don't believe the hype.
I play all my games under Vista old & new it dont matter.OkuLaris
Ohhh goodie! heheh, i hope that means my acquired version of System Shock 2 will work mwahahaha.....ahahah....eheh....eh..lousy emphysema. ...i hope you're not a cop.
[QUOTE="Andrew_Xavier"]Only 2gb?
Definetely go with XP.
joeychew
2gb ram is enough for vista.
I'll say it is. The recommended is like 1 GB. 2 is plenty!!
Topic: Lets here some answers people! I have heard rumours of Dx10 capability with Xp! Whats the go? biggest_loser
Vista requires more money for your hardware upgrades. XP doesn't, and with infinitely better performance. Vista's better looks is minor.
Funny to think the people here who talk crap about Vista are probably the same who said XP SP2 was crap when it was released 3 years ago.
It's simple, get Vista if you're getting a new PC. Installing an old OS on new hardware is not a good idea. You'll spend the first 3 days downloading patches to make it up-to-date.
As long as you have a modern machine and recent software, the performance difference between XP and Vista is nothing to worry about. Finding drivers is no problem if you're using modern hardware. Drivers have also matured a lot since last year. The look and feel is indeed different in Vista, but after a few weeks you'll see it's hard to go back to XP and you'll start to notice all those little improvements and extras in Vista far outweigh the minor inconveniences, which I don't deny still exist.
xp ain't dead yet....

And I don't agree with the statement about not being a good idea installing winxp on a new system. WinXP works fine on current chipsets.
I suggest flipping a coin, if you don't already have a copy of WinXP in a drawer.....somewhere.
Uhhh....could the guy who suggest I invest money in a Uwe Boll movie come forward....I have something for you
*Raises shovel*

Personally I think you don't know what you are talking about.
I personally can't wait to install Vista ( I have Premium..and my rig is more then ready for it)
But It's not ready to be installed..(.waiting for SP..supposed to be Jan 08.)
AndI don't feel I'm really missing anything by not having DX10 yet..
Crysis is looking real cherry in DX10 mod..
And asfor the little flippy panels of Aero...believe me I can wait a couple of months..
So yeah..someday soon I'm going to install Vista and be happy doing so...
But not today...
As for your question...
If your going to have it factory installed and warrantied ( Vista)..and it's a powerful rig..I'd say.".Go ahead and get Vista"
It's enitavable..
I would lose too many games I play because of Vista incompatiabilities right now....so I'm going to just wait.
Get a 64bit version of Vista and 4 gig's of ram.fivex84
Do I look like I'm made of money? Tell me about these different bit versions!!
I run Vista Home Premium with 2GB of RAM. It runs just fine. I am definitely enjoying vista too. It looks great and runs as far as I'm concerned. I may just not be as picky as the otherts though.
If you play old games, be aware,a small % of the older titles may not work properly.
