How will System Shock 2 run? I don't think I will be able to finish it in time before I undertake my Voyage to the New World.

I have not had one bug or incompatibility with vista and any of my peripherals. Vista is sweet and people are jealous. If you are buying/building a new PC then get vista, but I wouldn't upgrade to it if it was a current PC (seems like a waste of money)

If you get a new PC, why buy an old OS

I've tried both OS's and I switched back to XP, but that was just because my copy of Nero 6 was incompatible (in Vista) and they expected me to cough up more cash to update to Nero 7. I'll switch back to Vista eventually, but i'm in no rush to do that until I get a DX10 compatible vid. card

Getting a new PC without Vista is stupid, don't listen to people who say Vista sucks because most of them have never even had it on their PC. I did a poll not long ago and the majority who did not like Vista never even tried it. People heard tons of bad things about it after the "gotta-have-it-now" crowd ran out and got it at release. Every OS sucks at release, Vista is fine now. Don't believe the anti-hype, that is all it is, hype. And 2GB is plenty for Vista. I run Vista on my laptop and desktop with no issues at all, other than the Gears of War crap where you have to run as admin to start it. First problem I encountered with it.

weirjf

Don't believe this guy, ever... about anything. I'm coming from a test environment of 20 differently-configured (hardware) computers with vista; desktop and laptop and 14 had issues that start popping up after 6-8 weeks of use and have had to be reloaded twice in 3 months. The remainder except 2 had to be reloaded once in 3 months. I have XP machines that have been going for 4 years without a reload. Manufacturer drivers for Vista are also still sub-standard. There is random OS file corruption popping up that MS can't even explain short of "reinstall". Vista worked awesome, at first. DX10 is minor fluff with no real appreciable improvement. It isn't worth it at this time to install Vista. Play the odds and get XP.

I've been running Vista for over two months now and I can attest to the problems you have mentioned. I so very much want these issues to get ironed out, but in the mean time I am becoming disappointed that I made the move to Vista. It has just been very frustrating and I'm hoping if and when SP-1 hits sometime soon many of these issues will get resolved....by the way, Im running Vista Ultimate X64, which may be part of the reason it's not running as well as it should.....:(

That isnt a fair poll because of the scam remark. I just bought and loaded XP Media Center Edition on a brand new machine I built. Striker Extreme Mobo Q6600 CPU 2 gig Corsair 8500s Dominators EVGA 8800 GT KO version I even bought the Media Center remote. So I love the way this machine runs with a samsung widescreen 22 inch display. Digital connection. The Remote is fun and I am just learning how to use it. So I would say buy a OEM version of XP MCE. I do have Vista Ultimate which I do like but it is NOT true that you can play all the old games fine. I have many many games and you can just forget them running. I must have 100 PC games. It is true that DirectX 10 looks good. I have been playing Crysis on my Vista SLI 8800 GTX box and yes it is great but you really should buy the OEM XP MCE edition while you can. Download updates and save them. The Remote is only like 25 bucks and it is a lot of fun. It was really refreshing to not type and use the mouse for a while. So I use this computer for movies and making music and all my old games if they will run in wide screen. Yea so get it. Its a little over 100 dollars.

Yeesh. He doesn't like the poll and yet he still commented. Man sure loves his remote. I really think I'm going to go with Vista my friends...not so sure about the ol' remote though. *Shakes head*

XP is better all the way, Vista downgrades your computer. Getting Vista now would be stupid, and DX10 is just not worth it right now and the hit on performance is so terrible. Personally, I think Vista might be the first Windows Opertaing System that comes to close to failure.hamidious

Obviously someone doesn't remember Windows ME.

Does this have anything to do with an evil remote previously mentioned?

People who say "Vista" are only people who got stuck with it pre-installed on their computers.

See what I did there?

I have both installed on my harddrive, and I never boot Vista. Why? Because Vista is useless. It's slower, buggier, and harder to use than XP. TC, you should know better than to always follow the majority because the majority is rarely correct. XP is still being developed for and will be the primary operation system of choice for years. While at the same time, Vista isn't going to work that great with everything for the same amount of time. Vista hating is justified, Vista loving isn't.

Get Vista with a new machine. If you're going to spend the money to get a DX10 capable system why waste your time on an OS that won't deliver it? I've been running Vista for a few months now and it is completely worth it. For the one who complained about Vista and Nero 6? Vista Home Premium comes with its own burning software inherent with WMP, and new DVD Burners come packaged with Nero 7. I've had no problems with it besides one older game that used to CTD every hour. Stability issues? None.

Its true that the majority of those who vote against Vista are those that have never used it. Granted the networking system is completely overhauled and a pain in the ass, but its just something new to learn. And with Vista you can throw away your installation CDs for any peripheral you plug in. Connected to the net? It'll go and grab it faster and better than XP ever did.

Vista if you're buying a new machine. 2GB of RAM is good for gaming on Vista. I actually recently made the switch myself, and I really don't understand what spurs all the hatred for it. If you have a decent system with relatively recent hardware, it's a pleasant experience. I've never even thought about going back to XP.

My only real problems with are UAC (which can be disabled) and the fact that it takes around 2 minuites for Vista to detect and fully establish my home network connection when it intially boots up. Neither are major issues.

Because no card can run any DX10 game smoothly, that's why. Also, DX10 is a jip.

If you're buying a good new computer go the whole way and get it with Vista. Not sure about what version, as there seems to be too many to pick from and it's not really clear what the difference is between them. You can always install XP on a partition and make it dual boot, so you get the best of both worlds.

As for RAM 2GB would be a minimum for me. I have that amount now for my machine running XP, and everyone seems to accept that running games under Vista seems to use more RAM than under XP. Anyway RAM is easy to add later on, and prices always drop, so you can easily upgrade this in a year if you find you don't have enough :)

Vista SP1 blew...huh?..no performance boost either...

XP shown to befaster in all application then Vista...

Now SP3 ?...

Looks like XP will be going strong for awhile yet..

I think you should choose Vista because if you are going to build a honking crazy powerful machine, you should get the Operating System that best wastes all that untamed power!

Hi, ever heard of a dual boot setup ? if you are not sure, do a dual boot and get both. you will end up finding your self in Vista most of the time anyway, so after a wile you might just choose then and take out the one you never use. but like someone in this tread said, to make a new computer today, without at least Vista in it is really stupid. but if you are unsure, do a dual :).

Okay thank you . I've decided I will go with Vista. I'm just wondering if I will have to purchase it from the people putting the computer together or whether they will install if for free. If I have to buy it will cost me like $300 + Level 6 Boot.

Funny to think the people here who talk crap about Vista are probably the same who said XP SP2 was crap when it was released 3 years ago.

It's simple, get Vista if you're getting a new PC. Installing an old OS on new hardware is not a good idea. You'll spend the first 3 days downloading patches to make it up-to-date.

As long as you have a modern machine and recent software, the performance difference between XP and Vista is nothing to worry about. Finding drivers is no problem if you're using modern hardware. Drivers have also matured a lot since last year. The look and feel is indeed different in Vista, but after a few weeks you'll see it's hard to go back to XP and you'll start to notice all those little improvements and extras in Vista far outweigh the minor inconveniences, which I don't deny still exist.

Gog
That's quite an exxageration. I got a new comp late last month (Intel Core Duo, Geforce 8800 GT), and it took me 30 min. to update WinXP.

I just about bust my guts open laughing at the Uwe Boll option in the poll, which is not a good thing because I had a bad case of food poisoning a few days ago and my mid-section is still sore when I laugh! Still that was pretty funny though!!!

Seriously, in response to the question, I would tough it out for a few more months with your current system until SP1 comes out for Vista and then go with it. XP is great and all, but if you are building a modern rig with a DirectX 10 video card, then Vista is the way I would go personally. Home Premium.

Hmmmmm. Uwe Boll is doing better than the consoles...interesting....

Dude this is my current system:

1.2 Ghz

576 RAM

GeforceFX 5700.

Windows 2K.

Mouse

I don't think I can tough it out any longer on a system that is 8 years old. I'm going to go with Vista.

Basically, you want to install Vista to makes games run better. But that doesn't happen because the games performance is so bad under Vista, therefore, your computer under XP >>>> your computer under Vista. Effectively, Vista downgrades your computer.

I just want to be up to date for a little bit and to also have the option of Dx10 should I be able to use it with a game. By the way I'm waiting for Alan Wake too, a Vista Exclusive (and on 360)
