Great News!

"For those who recently upgraded their PC video cards to support DX10, you’ll be happy to know that both Episode Two and Team Fortress 2 will support the advanced technology of these cards, even if the PC is running Windows XP. On the low-end front, Valve still plans on supporting PCs that can only run DX8 applications. Valve’s attempting to also support DX7, but couldn’t confirm if it’d go back that far with technology."

No, read and pay attention, "will support the advanced technology of these cards" Similar to how Nvidia, in their tech demos, used OpenGL 2.0 features to simulate DX10 in XP.

Thats impossible because XP doesn't support DX10 and Microsoft would just sue if they found a way to run it on XP lol. Also HL2 engine Source uses DX and Not Open GL and same for TF2

Also Advance tech = these cards will run on XP.

They could consider alot of the features the Dx10 cards have as advanced and it has nothing to do with what X10 specializes in.

Ever get bored of being wrong all the time?

Emulating DX10 features isn't breaking any kind of intellectual property laws.  If a video card can do DX10 effects without DX10, MS has nothing to say about it.  It's just going to be more hardware intensive to run those effects on XP.

Exactly..... This does not mean HL2 will be using DX10 effects, let alone being able to bend space/time and make DX10 features work on XP.

Thats why Valve is my favorite developer; they take the whole range of gamers into consideration.  Dx10 is great for the few thousand gamers with Dx10 cards, but to go back and offer support for Dx8 and even Dx7 is extremely thoughtful of them.

Sounds like good news, hopefully more developers can do that. I'm not touching Vista for a long time and it's too bad Microsoft is too greedy to make some dx10 patch for XP.

DX 7 what a joke, if you use DX 7 hardware you have no place playing modern games period. If they stopped wasting their time like this maybe they would complete something in a timely manner.

Well, there are certain people in this world who either dont have the financial means to afford, or the accessto, groundbreaking hardware.  They need video games too, so Dx7 isnt a joke yet.  I admit its pretty dated, though, and that Valve would still make a great deal of money by marketing to Dx8 on up only.

It's a major issue for PC gaming in general, making a PC game requires that it works on a huge variety of hardware. Else they limit their potential customers.

If this is true then i wouldn't be surprised to hear of at least one more delay on the release of this game due to problems implementing it.

For the record, even if you use directx, you don't have to pass trough directx for every function in your program; it's possible to make use of the extra hardware on directx 10 card without using directx 10. Directx 10 is just an API. It's designed to make programming easier. You can bypass it with your own API/programming.

So I can walk into mny neighborhood Bestbuy in Vietnam and buy a Geforce 7600, or I can convince newegg.com to ship me a Geforce 7900GS to the Congo?

Not every country is as developed or as accessable as the Americans, parts of Asia, and Western Europe.

Yeah, life isn't fair though.. And to be honest the most profit come from the devolped nations such as in Europe, the America's or the Eastern Asian nations, the places where this hardware is available..     The fact of the matter you can get a DX9 card for less then a brand new pc game only adds to the point why companies should not be expected to give such hardship in allowing such outdated technology when its very inexpensive to upgrade...  And if you live in Congo or Vietnam, tough luck but those countries do not represent the majority of the populations who can.

i really don't care if it uses dx10 or not. personally, i'm too poor to afford a dx10 card+windows vista for the next year or so.
but i guess valve has to appeal to everyone to sell everything.
