[QUOTE="DanielDust"]8800GT, 1680x1050, and in rare cases (WiC, CoH, both DX 10) 1440x900.biggest_loser
How come thats rare?
Well, because other than those two and Crysis Wars (which on certain maps I go even lower than 1440x900), I playe/ed all games on 1680x1050, all that have such resolutions, even Crysis with the CCC mod it's at 1680x1050, and Warhead when I want real performance I play it lower than 1440x900, but when I just wan to relax and admire the game, I play it at 1680x1050, maxed out, no AA at around 26-30 frames in less intense areas and around 20 when there are a lot of enemies, I know I can get better performance if I switch to DX 9, but I won't go there ;). The only way to play WiC and CoH at 1680x1050 would be to go lower on AA, but 4xAA is pretty low so I'll stick with 1440x1050 :).
Other than those games, I didn't find anything I couldn't run at 1680x1050, maxed out with some AA or the highest level of AA, well except STALKER which runs like crap at any resolution except the widescreen equivalent of 1024x768, but I don't like the game so I don't care and by the looks of it, FarCry 2 won't be an exception to the 1680x1050 rule ;).[QUOTE="tiiaan"]HD4870X2, at 2560x1600 in my 30-inch lcd and at 1024x768 in my old crt for shooters and old games.NSR34GTR
what lcd do you have
It's a samsung XL30 i think, it's great to see movies, watch tv and play games like rts and rpgs, however i've found better playing fps and some old games in my samsung syncmaster crt because of the faster response time.
8800 GTS 320 Superclocked @ 1280x1024lordlors
Exact same XD
I would use higher but I need to get a bigger moniter

I don't play at any particular res as I have a CRT and am not restricted by something as ridiculous as native resolution. But for modern games, I play them anywhere from 1024x768 to 1600x1200 (obviously I play all my current games at 1600x1200 right now, I just mean for games of today or the future, should I have to lower the resolution to maintain good performance, I'll go as low as 1024x768 ), and I play usually at 1024x768 or less for old games that shrink the hud and crosshairs and all that when you increase resolution.

You can change the resolution of a game on a LCD. :|
Yes, but LCD's cannot actively change the number of pixels on-screen. Unlike CRT's, they have a set number of pixels, a set resolution, that they can only display. They display other resolutions by upscaling and downscaling, and almost always stretching. Any scaled resolution that can't divide perfectly into the native resolution (1600x1200 / 800x600 = 2x2, or perfectly divided) has to be stretched, even if the aspect ratio is the same. LCD's can't change the number or dimensions of their pixels, so when an image is stretched, the LCD pixels have to emulate varying numbers both vertically and horizontally of pixels for the resolution trying to be displayed, which creates all kinds of blockiness and blurring and whatnot. It's difficult to explain, but simply put, displaying any resolution other than your native will look like garbage.
Yeah, but if I can't run a game at 1680 x 1050 (my native resolution) when I use a lower resolution, it doesn't look like garbage at all. It looks just like on my old CRT, higher resolutions look better then lower resolutions. I don't see any garbage on my LCD when I use non-native resolutions. Maybe you are talking about desktop resolutions? I'm talking about changing resolution in game. Either way I don't see any of what you are talking about.

Then you just aren't noticing it. Fact is, LCD's are incapable of producing a perfect image other than their native res. There will be slight distortions and imperfections on any LCD of any quality. I'm not just saying this because I think so; this is a fact of the design of the LCD monitor. You may not notice this fact, which is fine, but I do and I'll stick with CRT until something more scalable than LCD becomes mainstream.
I have a 9800GTX and play at 1680x1024. I have another comp that has an HD4850 and plays at 1440x900.
EDIT: And JP_Russel is right. Playing on a non-native resolution on an LCD monitor is downright ugly.

It's not downright ugly unless you are obsessing over it. My 17" laptop has a native res of 1440x900 but I don't play today's games on that res because of poor performance. When I first got my laptop I tested gme demos like Doom 3, F.E.A.R, Half-Life 2 and some older games like Savage and Hitman Contracts. When I played them all on 1024x768 the picture looked brilliant to me. So sure when I play any game on anything lower than my native res the picture stretches a little and the picture clarity maybe isn't technically 100% (I noticed the stretching over time and the clarity deal from this topic), but it doesn't bother me I'm happy enough with my setup. Besides, this is not something laptop users should be worrying about, because god knows we paid enough for our computers so we should just try to enjoy the games and not look for problems.

It's nothing to do with obsessing over it. It's just that it looks so bad that it's easily noticeable and distracting to the experience for me. I'd much rather play at 1024x768 on a CRT than play at, say, 1440x900 on a 1680x1050 LCD, for instance. I can easily tolerate jaggies of that size if I must and I don't obsess over anything, but the picture quality on non-native LCD resolution is so noticeable without even trying to notice it for me that I don't need to obsess over it for it to be an issue with me.
