I just bought Final Fantasy VIII, nice. The discs seem to be fine, no scratches or anything.

Okay! But when I pop any of the four discs in I get a frighting grinding, scratching noise, and a disc read error. My other games play fine.

It seems through observation that the disc is slipping so it doesn't play properly.

Help please!?

....I bought it for a buck at a church store.....

i may not have had the same problem as you exactly, but my ff 8 disc just wouldn't play once...but i found if i kept putting it in and out it would eventually work...but it required a lot of patience...which i did not have a lot of the time

If your other games work fine, then the problem is in FFVIII.

Maybe because it is on cd.

try placing it on a level surface to see if the disc itself is warped

I used to have this problem with some old ps games I had and I used to solve the problem with scotch tape. I did some research and found the instructions on how to do it on another topic here:

I would suggest that you try the "Scotch Tape" solution that has been mentioned here a few times previously. I had all but given up on playing some of my games on blue discs like Oni and Pinball Hall of Fame but they seem to work just fine now. Take two strips of scotch tape about an inch or so long, put one on each side of the hole in the middle fairly close to the edge - on the top side of the disc only. They should be parallel and make sure they're pressed down well. Apparently this helps to better balance the blue discs as they spin (or so I've read elsewhere) so you don't get the read errors and/or horrible racket.

I know this sounds really odd, but it does work sometimes.

More than likely, the disc was resurfacced and it did not work. If that is the case, there isn't really anything you can do about it. Same basic deal with my copy of FFIX. I reached hte fourth disc and cannot finish the game (second time through). It sucks. It sucks hard. FFIX was my favorite of hte PSone FF games

try doing this, it worked for my FF VIII copy and my fat PS2 (for those who had it, you may have read in the booklet about needing to turn the console on in an specific way to read some PS games).

Insert the disc, the put the console on stand by. Press and hold the ON button until you see the PS logo. That should work :D

I have two copies of that game and I've had 3 altogether. 1 version of the game is a burned copy that can be ran on an emulator or a PS with a mod chip. I've never had that problem. The disc must be foul. I don't know what to tell you because that problem seems more like a hardware problem.

Since you just bought it, can you return it (or exchange if you got it from a shop?)
