Taken from www.cheatcodecentral.com-

"According to website mcvuk.com, Sony is currently planning on revamping the Playstation 2 to create a "compact" edition which will be available in early 2008 for the new price of $99, which is $30 less than the current price.

Sony has yet to deny or confirm this rumor, but gamers have been expecting a new price drop for the PS2 since the debut of the PlayStation 3 and the recent price cuts to the latter system.

The newer model is supposed to have a built in power supply, which will allow Sony to manufacture is more efficiently and economically. "

Wow, looks like they're doing a good job with this whole 10-year life cycle thing they've been talking about. They've only got 3 more years until the PS2 hits the 10 year mark. If this news is true, it'll boost popularity enough to get to the 10 year mark, and I'd even say it could pass it.

Yeah, they announced the same thing on G4 a few days ago. They are still releasing games for it so it doesn't surprise me. Especially since the new $399 40GB PS3 has no backwards compatibility at all. Sony needed to do something for people who still want to play there PS2 games but need to replace their system due to wear and tare and the new PS3 they just bought can't play any of their old games. It's almost like sweet justice for 360 fans. A lot of people criticized MS because the 360 requires update downloads to play each original Xbox game and even then not every game is compatible...yet. At least MS still releases new updates so more and more games can be played.

PS2 doesn't have much time left, I would suspect the last game will arrive in the next year - year and a half. Although I still think it is the best console on the market, and I play PS2 games much more than I do PS3 games. This new system is a good step though in extending the longevity of the systems life.

Agreed. :) I recently bought a silver version of the new model and it's nice to know PS2 versions of games are still being released. I can't wait to get the 3 latest Tony Hawk games!
