What survival horror games are the best....and which ones just suck?

For me, the best survival horror games are:

The Silent Hill series: Chilling atmosphere, deep storylines and just plain freaky enemies.

Resident Evil: Zombie killing never gets old.

The Suffering: Quite possibly one of the bloodiest survival horror games...like, ever.

And for GODS SAKE, give your reasoning, if for no other reason then to prevent trolling. :/

I've beaten both The Suffering games, 6 Resident Evil games, and 2 Silent Hill games. If you wanna get scared, play Silent Hill 2 and the remake of the first Resident Evil on the GameCube. I you want suspense, play The Suffering Series and Resident Evil 4. As far as the best and worst goes, I can't really tell you. All the games you listed are good games.

The Resident Evil Remake is my all-time favorite. It has graphics and zombies, and manages to scare you in new ways even if you think you already know the game. Resident Evil in general has been better to me than Silent Hill. I tried to get into the series but got frustrated (since you asked for specific reasons) by the number of locked/unopenable doors. In the hotel, shopping mall, amusement park, prison... hallways full of locked doors. At least in RE you get a clue about whether you need to open a door at all. And the enemy variety is also better in RE, I think. Maybe less "realistic" but more interesting than mannequins. Just opinions... thanks for the topic.

Am I the only one on here who really enjoyed the PS1-era Dino Crisis games? Not that crappy Dino Crisis 3 for Xbox, but Dino Crisis 1-2 for the PS1 were both excellent survival horror games. I personally enjoyed Dino Crisis 1-2 as much as any of the PS1-era Resident Evil games. Silent Hill is an excellent series as well, although The Room was just okay. The Suffering is an excellent game, too. I never played Ties That Bind, but the first Suffering game was definitely worth picking up.

I tried the Dino Crisis demo that came with RE3, and it was a little too hard for me. I love dinosaurs almost as much as I love zombies, so I may have to go back and try that one again.

while not the most difficult...the ambience make Silent Hill 2 my all time favourite game. It is one of the few I have played to every one of the alternate endings at least once and most of them a couple times.

Silent Hill 3 is not far behind in creepiness rating...I rather like Heather as the female protagonist. There is as much spookiness here as in SH2 and it is almost as good.

The Silent Hill series is great, my favourite game series after Metal Gear Solid (as if you couldn't already tell :P). Silent Hill 2 is probably the best Survival Horror game I have ever played (it was also the first). It was a very scary game and the storyline sucked you right in, made you really want to find out the true meaning of why James was drawn to the town (which is then revealed later on in a great plot twist that I just wasn't expecting).

Other horror games I have enjoyed have been the Fatal Frame series (scariest games of all time IMO), the Resident Evil series (never enjoyed these as much as other horror games, though RE4 was kickass), The Suffering duo (a great pair of horror shooters and they really ramp up the gore levels :D) and Obscure, which is a fun little co-op title.

I also really enjoyed Clive Barker's Jericho. It thought this was very underated and that some of the reviews were pretty harsh. It had a great story (as it should do, if its being penned by one of the horror genre's greats), a wicked macabre art design and a lot of variety. I loved being able to switch between the six squad members and use their different powers and weapons (guiding a sniper bullet in into demons heads in slow motion never gets old :D).
