If Sony actually releases a Wii like controller for the PS2 (like recent rumors have stated), it would be GENIUS. The first thing you will say is "well, PS2 games wouldn't be compatible" and you're right, past PS2 games would not be compatible. However, since developers love porting PS2 games to Wii, if Sony came out with a Wii like controller for the PS2, all 3rd party games made for the Wii could easily be ported to the PS2. This, in turn, would take away exclusives from Nintendo, make more money for developers, AND slow down sales of the Wii like crazy. Sony could announce such a controller at E3 and also announce a price drop of the PS2 down to $99.

In effect, people would be able to purchase a PS2 with the Wii like controller for $99 and get the same type of games. Or, the 110 million people who alerady have a PS2 can simply buy the controller for future game releases and not have to spend $250 on the Wii. Also, this would add another few years to the life of the PS2, which is the most succesful console ever made. This would be an incredibly smart business move by Sony, and frankly, if they don't do something like this, they are missing a huge opportunity.

Of course, there would be all types of fanboys saying Sony copied blablabla, and so what? It would be copying them, but it would also be very genius in a business sense.

First of all, thiis is easier said than done. With all the issues and commitment Sony needs for the PS3, it would be impossible to work with my PS2. Seondly, the PS2 is at its end days, give it another year or two, and it will cease to be mentioned as current gen. It's too late, and it would totally make Sony look desperate. Sony needs to focus on the PS3, not the PS2.

I already said this in the GGD forum, so yeah, I completely agree for every reason you state.

I'm completely intrigued by the possibilities of motion sensing in a controller...but if Sony could give that with the PS2 and it's MASSIVE back catalog of games all for only $100, I'd be downright stupid not to buy the console (which is true- I don't own a PS2...only owned one for about 4 months at one point).

Like you said, since the gap in power isn't overally great (as in, PS2---> PS3 gap), it would be quite easy for developers to use the new controls in games and support it.

The real question would be how Sony would use its internal studios- now they're looking at 3 consoles to support, and how they go about that could be critical in the success or failure of any of them.

Even if Sony made a Wii-esk controller, I doubt that any more than a few games would be ported to the PS2. Most of the Wii titles currently are 1st party Nintendo exclusives, and Nintendo wouldn't give that up. Perhaps a few 3rd party games could come out for the PS2, like Manhunt 2 with the Wii controls (if it is allowed to launch that is) But in the long run, t will be futile.

There are many reasons why that wouldn't work.

1. Nintendo would sue the **** out of Sony if that happened.

2. There is no reason for Sony to upgrade the PS2, when they have the PS3 and PSP to worry about atm.

3. Like another user said, it would seem very desperate of Sony and just give them a bad reputation for blatantly ripping off the Wii.

You know, as much as it would be sheer genius to combine the best of both worlds for the gamers; it wouldn't be in the best interests of Sony to do so. On the other handit would be a disastrous business move for the company simply because most of their resources are being spent on, or rather should be spent on the PS-III.

Also it wouldn't 'gel' if i may say so with the 'common' man for various reasons, that being monetary to it -just not being the the PS one loves and adores-. The consumer can be very fickle and very difficult to please.

At the same time i do not believe that the PS-II is on its last legs, as of yet. it may be staring into the grave but its foot isn't in it yet. simply because, as i said before, monetary value. Half the world, believe it or not cannot afford to spend on the frivolities of the luxurious life. I can be clubbed asone of them... as much as i would like to grab a PS-III I cant afford it, not with my current spending rate on college. The PS-II may fade off from the topside of the world but down here, it still has time to shine no matter how dimly.

1. Nintendo couldn't do anything unless Sony uses the same technology. But as we know in life, there is more than one way to achieve the same thing.

2. There is a reason for Sony to do so- to stop the Wii's momentum. Perhaps they feel that it won't be several years before the PS3 hits its stride and really starts doing some amazing things. They need to buy some time- if this gets the job done, then so be it.

3. Perhaps to the hardcore, but I'm pretty sure that the casuals won't give two ****s.

That might not be such a good idea for multiple reasons that were explained on the other topic. The main one is that most ps2 games are not compatible.

Wouldnt Nintendo be really pissed ?? >.> alothough it would be nice if that could happen....but i doubt Nintendo would let that happen in the first place since i think PS2 is gonna need approval fromthem first.

that's probably the reason they don't want to do it. they need to get people buying the ps3 rather than the ps2.

they don't want to make the same mistake krispy kreme did
