Dirge of Cerberus, Crisis Core, and any other FF7 games are basically Sony's way of trying to milk one of the best games of all time for all its worth(greedy so.......) But anyways, be sure to stick with Final Fantasy 7 because it is(imo) on of the best games of all time and my personal favorite.
I have just recentely started playing Final Fantasy and I really enjoy it. I started with FFXII and finished, great game. I just bought FFVII but so far its a bit of a let down. I was looking up some other FF games and noticed their are more than one of each number. Eg. FFVII: Dirge of Cerberus/FFVII: Crisis Core. Why is this? Is it the same storyline just playing as a different character?Drunko_ElfIt might be a bit of a let down compared the mechanics and additions that the series has adopted over the last 10 years since FFVII came out, but you gotta understand, for its time, FFVII was pretty groundbreaking. I'm actually replaying through it right now for my 5th time. I'm 23 years old, and it still has the same impact for me that it had when I was 12; it's really just that kind of game. The first few hours of the first disc is a little slow, and what you think the game is about, isn't even close to what it becomes. It's not the beginning of the game that people loved so much; it's all of the overlapping stories, events, shocks, and heartbreaks that come along the way, right up to the very end.

How is Sony milking FF7 when they don't even own the franchise?
Initially, the FF series concept was that each game was in it's own isolated world, with little to no contact between them, different characters, and (often) vastly different fight mechanics.
In the last 5-or-so years, Square has apparently decided to go back and revisit certain games that (i guess) they felt deserved more story or time.
For example, FF7 deals (mainly) with Cloud trying to stop Sephiroth. Dirge of Cerberus deals with Vincent (a vampire-like optional playable character from FF7 (and one of the cooler ones :) ) and his attempts to stop a group of maniacs from destroying the (world? universe? can't remember)
FFX deals with Yuna and Tidus attempting to stop Sin. FFX:2 deals with Yuna trying to stop the planet being destroyed.
Frankly, Square did a better effort with FFX:2 than FF7DoC, if only because they didn't have characters from the old game popping up gratuititously, and also it was an extremely non-linear storyline.
Anyway, FF7 is an awesome, awesome game. It took me a while to like it too.. but, it's memorable.
some FF main games have sequels, like FFVII has Crisis Core, Drige of Cerberus, etc; FFX has X-2; FFXII has Revenant Wings (for DS), etc
if FFVII was a letdown then maybe Final Fantasy is not for you, perhaps you should be looking for a western action-based RPG that looks more like FFXII, but i dont know what to recommend

Oops. I meant square enix. Sorry.
heh... you messed up by starting with FFXII and liking it. All the other FF games will probably be a disappointment to you, because none of them play like FFXII.... They all play like each other (minus the spin-off games), with the party forming a line and take turns bashing each other, where you are allowed to heal and the enemy doesn't..... And with a stories that surround themselves with tragic love...
Gameplay and story presentations just makes FFXII the black sheep of the series, with FFX-2 following in second. I'd venture to say that a good many people that have followed the series since FFVII and below, didn't care fore FFXII, all that much.... I know I didn't, anyway.

Actually, I played FF7, FF8, FF10 and FF12 in that order, and I thought FF12 was very good, possible worthy of 'best in series'. FF7 ranked in with a close second. :/
