I playing through ffvii for the first time. I will say that im not into the story at this point like was with ffx but I like the game so far and I feel the need to keep playing for some reason.
ff7 is incredibly awesome game .....i remember was the only reason why i baught my 1st ps, the storyline was completly unpredictable not to mention the antagonists .....two thumbs upÂ
After starting with FF1 and recently playing FF12 I have to say that honestly while Final Fantasy 7 is indeed a great game it really is overrated a lot of times with it's praise I feel. What really sets it apart from what came before is it's graphics I feel. It's Materia system is not that different from the Esper system in Final Fantasy 6. Then there is the system in FF5. It's story has several twist and turns but it's really not that much better then Final Fantasy 4, 5, or 6. It's really good I agree but not leaps above what came before it or even after it (FF9 for example). Character wise, again Final Fantasy 6 especially had far more fleshed out characters and more interesting ones all around. Not to mention some of the best villains. Final Fantasy 7's leap to 3D tends to cause it's praise I think. The change is a really good one I agree and it did add a lot of the game. That's really what sets it apart from what came before. There are a lot of things in the game that were done better in games that came before and even games that came after it. In the end though I agree it does get overrated a LOT.
VII was good, but overrated. VIII was great, but terrible junction system IMO. IX was good. X was good, but didn't like the art style of the game, strayed from the PS games. XI was...well....yeah... XII IMO was one of the best.
Overrated, I hate to use that word honestly but I think VII deserves it. Primarily because of several reasons. The music really is annoying. Barret really annoyed me as the stereotype angry black man. The materia system wasn't too deep. The really ugly polygonal characters that go in and out of Cloud on the field that looked bad in 1996, and looks much worse now 11 years after. Yuffie can go to hell, stupid twit. Cait Sith. . . Also, the fact that Square-Enix is going through this whole VII revival of games really turns me off. I had more fun playing Grandia in 1997, even though I couldn't understand a word of Japanese since it was released in Japan for the Sega Saturn before hitting the PlayStation.
I think ff7 deserved every bit of praise it got. Though i will say ff10 and ff12 are the overrated ones. FF7 had a soul all the way throughout. If you died 30 times on a boss, you still wanted to progress just to finish the story. Though if i died about 2 or 3 times in ff12, i'd just say thats enough and quit because nothing pushed me to go forward.
Final Fantasy 7 is a really, really great game, easily one of the greatest games ever, but in terms of Final Fantasy, it is not nearlty as good as FF4 or FF6.
Overrated. It was a nice game and all, but I'm tried of hearing about it non-stop 24/7. It seems the only visible justification for all this hype is the fact that this is the first 3D rpg... Which doesn't help much, since the gaming community from what I can see is overflowing with rampant graphic whores.
FFVII isnt my favorite, but i dont believe it was overated at all. It may seem so with all the demands for it these days, with advent children, crappy spin-off games and the constant "I want FFVII remade for the PS3!".
But you have to remember how much of a breakthrough game is was when it released. $60 million budget and over 200+ artists and such working on the game (something thats just becoming common with games these days), the transition from Nintendo to PS2, first RPG to introduce CG cutscenes, 3 disk span....all that on top of one of the greatest stories ever, best villian and a wonderful end-battle music (one-winged angel) to coincide with the last boss.
You think FF12 would be as memorable as FF7. Only FF game that most people would love better than 7, is FFVI of course.
FFX is the best ive played, i havent played 8 9 11 or 12, but who wants 11 anyway. for me its hard to get a hang of the outdated graphics for FFVII, haveing just picked it up (im not even off the first disc yet and ive had it since july, i also dont play it like ever, and usually RPGs have me addicted from start to finish)

Considering the fact that when it came out it was the greatest accomplishment ever at the time. If you played it when it came out, it was amazing, however if you played it a few years later, it just wasn't as good anymore...still a great game. But I never really did like the story all that much. Not that great of a story...I liked 8's story sooooo much better.
Well technically, even though Final Fantasy VIIÂ in my opinion, was the best, others like FFX (continued storyline) and FFXII (different combat system) were good but i think it was FF VII that revolutionized the FF franchise. Memorable characters, and even movies (Advent Children) and side games (Dirge of Cerberus) were made. Â
In all honesty, dont you guys ever get exhausted discussing final fantasy being ovverated? This is the 192,359 topic posted about FF7 being overrated. I think these kinda topics are overrated...lol
We all know this game revolutionize RPGS. It set the bar for any rpg in my opinion during its release. Enough said.
FF7 is still my favorite FF. its the only one I played everyday all the way through. i didnt take any breaks(as i am with ff4 and ff12...and 8...wow..lol) 8 sucks i hate that game
BTW, to those of you who are saying FFX is better...just no, not unless you are a graphics whore, the thing was ridiculously linear and didn't seem like it was designed to be that way either, unlike some other games I know of (Grandia series, Rogue Galaxy) which actually pull off the linearity thing pretty well, FFX was a exercise in tedium.

Problem is it actually brought some negative things to the genre as well, for one it make FMVs popular and because of that you ended up with games like FFX that is a series of cutscenes interspersed with bits of gameplay. The franchise also originated tons of character stereotypes that are a source of stagnation and frustration for some long-time roleplaying fans especially when people keep saying "X game ripped Final Fantasy off". On the plus side it kind of brought the idea of an epic RPG to a larger market and pioneered some concepts such as Active Time battle.

Grandia beats any main-franchise Final Fantasy game hands-down.
I could care less about VII being in 3D. I loved the game for what it was back then. Do people over rate it? Sure. It's still my favorite thus far though.
man this is like the 10 post ive seen of this topic, LOL, anyway FF7 is definitely the best it paved the way for all the rest of them with ground breaking game play, story, etc.
FF VIII is the best in my opinion, but that was the first Final Fantasy I played aside from the ones on Sega a long time ago (which I don't even remember anything about because I never got that far in them).
final fantasy 7 is the best . i like the storyline although the battle system look old but you know what ff7 was created in before 2000. so what you expected.
ive never really liked final fantasy games, ive played 7 nearly all the way through, 8 nearly all the way through, and 12 nearly all the way through. I can say that 7 is a good game but overrated x20.5, 8 was much better and 12 was just boring so judge as you may thats what i say.
