If you havent played one yet it isnt like your life is gonna end. It's no big deal. You could start playing right now, because all the games follow different storylines. But you would probably be a little behind the curve because most of the best games are going on 10 years old.
A lot of people dont like them anyway. I do though.
actually...........Iv never played one either.............
But.....im not that interested in turn based combat anyway...maybe you shoud try renting one first?
the only Final Fantasy game that you need to have played the former to get the full story is X-2. everyone says that VII is the best FF game out there, but its so hard to find. on amazon the least expensive they have it as is $55, and thats when its used.
like the other guy said, i'd start with X.

i got it brand new 2 years ago for $10. beat THATEach story is independant of the other ones. But, don't get it now. I personaly detest anyone who picks up anything after FFVII and says "I play Final Fantasy games." Only original Final Fantasy players like me deserve to enjoy the games. It's called elitist..
anyways, if you want to play just play. storys are independant, each game tries to do something different as far as combat. But if you choose FFXII as your first I doubt you ever play the others because the combat is so different.
FF7 man, all the way!!! it's the only RPG I've EVER finished at 100%, getting EVERYTHING maxed out, getting every little secrets, beating all the bonus bosses (here known as "Weapons")! FFX is notbad but I didn't like the fact that at the end, all your characters are pretty much the same because of the god awfull sphere grid.... but it's still pretty good a game! And of course the classic FF1 to 6 are all pretty much bad ass! Didn't like the 12, besides from having a girly hero..... very girly hero, I don't like having my partners controled by the cpu, I wish they would stick to the classic turn based combat! It's not a FF but Legend of Dragoon is one of the best classic RPGs as well, it you like to actually press buttons in a battle! :P
Start with either 7 for ps1 or 10 for ps2

VII is really expensive though. the cheapest it is on amazon is $55, its rediculous.
i would have to agree with you on getting X though. its a really fun game with awesome characters and a beautiful world.
I just never got to it...also cause they are already at 12 and i wont know whats going on. Should i buy it(or a different one) anyways? jensen_slipknot
I've never played one because RPGs bore me. Welcome to the club.
I'm almost in the same boat as blackdemon_. FFVII is the only game I've come close to 100%. It's my favourite game of all time, which I still beatevery few years, but I still haven't gotten Aeris' ultimate weapon and one or two other things. It is very dated graphically, but then again I still play Super Mario 3. Originally I had a burned version, then I got a greatest hits before they became all too rare. Still got it ^_^. As I always do when writing about VII, I'd like to note that FF Tactics is also a great game. By the way I've played from the NES games since I was like 4 or something and have missed 1 or 2 titles from the NES andSNES days but otherwise beat them all.
You definitely should play final fantasy 7 & 8.
i kind was disappointed about FF9, i didn't bought the stories.
I was just recently playing FFX, didn't quite dug into the story, but the combat is really greatbeen able to switch characthers in-fight added to the strategy on combat, and it feels faster paced.
But, off course you should try older versions also. Go for it!

What the hell are you talking about? I own all the FF's and would definately recommend anyone to play the games and enjoy them...
Start with FFVII, then FFVIII, then FFX. If you don't like pre-redered backgrounds which occour in VII and VIII i would start with FFX, so you start off with a good experience to the franchise as X has a great story, and IMO, is one of the easiest FF's as well as IX.
They're all great games, enjoy!
Oi, FF newbies.
Don't bother with VII. It's just hype and hype. Nothing special about the game. It has god-awful dialogue and graphics. I like it because I played it back when it was new, but it hasn't aged well at all, so it's not recommendable for new players.
Don't bother with VIII either. Definitely not for the newbs. Its gameplay is broken and slow, and it doesn't even feel like an FF game. It will turn you off from the series more than anything else.
You should get it on with IX. Screw the haters, they judge the game by its style and like 50 Cent.
Depends on what kind of RPGs you like. The only Final Fantasies I have ever played were 10 (barely in to it with little intrest in continuing), tactics advance (still working on it), and crystal chronicals (rented it and not going to buy it). If you really want a new RPG to get into, I would look more to the "Tales" series as they have always been awsome for me. Then again I don't really like turn based RPGs much at all so it's up to you.
IX,VIII and VII in that order would be my favourites.
Although, the combat in ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLL Final Fantasy games I found rather tedious.
In short, get Grandia II for Dreamcast or PS2.It looks awful, but it's one of the best games I've ever played.

They're numbered like a consecutive series, but they all have different storylines altogether. Start wherever you want, but it's not necessary. Just get some opinions on the best and try it out :D
