Black and Timesplitters: Future Perfect. Period.
Black has great graphics and incredible physics and it's quite challenging. Timesplitters is also great in another direction: lots of extra content, online play, lots of humor and the story is entertaining.
I liked Urban Chaos the most. Probably not the BEST because of the crappy graphiccs and lack of features, but it was the funnest imo. It had alot of gore and some unique gameplay.
TS:FP was awesome, but you could only have a maximum of 8 players on a LAN (on the PS2, the Xbox version allowed 16), however, TS 2 allowed a maximum of 16 players on a LAN :P. If the online is important to you, only FP had online multiplayer, sadly EA pulled the plug on that server about 1-2 months ago... :( Maybe SOCOM still has online multiplayer.
However, you can still play "online" TS, or any LAN game, just check:
http://www.teamxlink.co.uk/
They have a program (X Link Kai) that allows you to play games (that have a LAN option enabled) over the internet!! Most of the users are Xbox users but once in a while there are PS2 or even GC users.
I tell you this because i want to play TS:FP again, but i don't find any one there who plays that game.
I agree, TimeSplitters: FP was the best FPS i've played. (considering that i hated TS2, this was quite something)
Great fun, lot's of replayability, offline modes etc.
Other great FPS (or shall we say the only decent FPS games on the PS2) were: Project Snowblind (second to TS, wish it had offline multiplayer) Black (great fun), Urban Chaos, Killzone
I really wanted to play Half life, but couldn't find it anywhere.

man...not many....buy xbox for those
Red Faction because it had destructable environments and you could make caves and it was also for up to 4 players split screen and you could play against bots. Also Black was a very good fps but there was no multiplayer. Killzone was ok the only reason it was underrated is because even before it was released people started calling it a "Halo Killer".nVidiaGaMer
That's very true, people bumped it up to be more than what it was. I liked BLACK and Killzone was pretty good for what it was worth. They should remake BLACK or a sequal would be nice. And at least have multiplayer and online play this time.
TimeSplitters 2. FP was cool. but minor control issues put it beneath TS2 in my opinion.
other noteworthy games?
Red Faction
Urban Chaos
Project Snowblind
XIII
