Which genre of game can we attribute the PS2's success to the most?

It's either RPG or FPS. I can't really decide. Probably RPG though. With games such as FFX, FFXII, Rogue Galaxy, Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2, .hack series, Xenosaga series, Dragon Quest VIII, Dark Cloud 2, and so many others, I think I can confidently say that the RPG genre did it for the PS2.

YOU HAVE ANSWERED YOUR OWN QUESTION.....

playstationcapo

No, that's my OPINION. I'm asking everyone else what they think and at the same time giving everyone else what I think.

I would say RPG even if that is my least favorite genre, and action/adventure.

FPS won't be PS2's success. IMO, it will be PS2's not successful genre because it's hard to play FPS using a controller. For me, Time Splitter is the only good FPS in PS2. PCis the best for FPS.

Action Adventure is the clear winner because all the biggest titles for ps2 (the ones people rant about on the forums the most - gow, mgs, sotc, okami, dmc, re4, gta, pop, rachet + clank, jak, sly, tomb raider etc ) all fit in that genre.

Free Roam, platforming, survival, third person shooters, first person shooters are all different types of action adventure games.

For that matter, in my eyes all action rpgs are also action adventure games. KH, Ys, Shining force, valkyrie, odin sphere, .dothack and all are just action adventure games only with more items, menus, and a leveling up system.

traditional rpgs and strategy rpgs are mostly niche titles.

Sports games are a bigger genre than them even.

Much like Nintendo in the past, the majority of the PS2's success came from its exclusive titles. The Grand Theft Auto, Metal Gear Solid, and Resident Evil franchises could almost single-handidly account for Sony's strangledhold of the market during the PS2's heyday. Then you throw in the Final Fantasy franchise and EA cornering the sports gaming market with the likes of Madden, FIFA, and Tiger Woods, and it's not hard to see why the PS2 did so well. Xbox didn't have the games or franchises to compete. They had Halo and Ninja Gaiden, and that's about it. Don't get me wrong, the Xbox is a great system, but the PS2 had the best games for a long, long time.

Honestly, I think everything really. I mean there were/are platformers, RPG's, strategy, adventure, racing/sports, FPS, fighting, 2-D (not a genre, I know, but it does have that niche market draw which leads me too...) all the off the wall and/or niche stuff to ensure the 'hard core' came along -- Mr. Mesqueto, Katamari Damaci, Steambot Chronicles and 'new-old school' (eg Red Star) etc.

It's a decent question, and RPG is probably the best answer, but I really think the PS2 is what it is largely due to its vast variety of games. It has EVERYTHING, and lots of it.

Sure there's the FF series, but what about SOCOM, MGS, GOW.....it goes on forever!

rpgs hands down, it has the largest library of rpgs for any console out there. With Final Fantasy and Square's games backing almost Sony exclusive on everything it's prety hard to argue.

I don't think any one genre had an overwhelming effect. The greatest thing about the PS2, distinguishing it from all other consoles over the years, is it has something to offer everyone. RPGs, action, adventure, puzzles, FPS, you name it, the PS2 most likely has it. The other good thing is there were stellar games in each one of those genres as well. While the Xbox has better FPS and sports games, it lacked on the other fronts, PS2 delivered on all of them.

Final Fantasy is prob the best system seller. FF7 did it for PS and FFX did it for the PS2.

Sports Games and RPGs. There weren't any FPS that made an impact on PS2, that belongs to PC and Xbox.
