I'm not really convinced he could do that well with God of War.  Yeah, his LoTR series was epic and awesome, however God of War (although is very epic) isn't the same type of story.  God of War is a very violent and rage filled story and so far the 'big name' directors don't seem to have any other movies that portray that.  So far 300 is the closest thing that comes to the pissed off, violent epic that is God of War (that I can think of) and from what I've heard 300 is awesome.  Therefore that director should do well with GoW's content.

Uwe Boll doesn't need to make anymore videogame movies, especially a God of War movie.  Granted the story is one dimensional (revenge) but so was Kill Bill and it turned out to be a great movie (however I don't think Tarantino should direct a GoW movie either).  They did distort the mythology but what movie/game/tv show hasn't when dealing with that material?

Its not always about a complex plot. God of War tells a story through emotion and it tells it better than ninety percent of ANYTHING out there. I read a lot of books, watch a lot of movies, and there are few things which have the kind of impact GoW does.

The liberal use of mythology doens't equate to a bad movie. Spiderman for instance. (Comics are a form of mythology at this point.) The story is that Peter builds web shooters. In the movie, the web comes out naturally. This is a major difference. It seperates Peter and Spidey more. But the movie didn't suffer. It thrived. So that's not a valid argument.

If I had my way, I'd probably go with Guillerm del Toro as someone else mentioned. The guy is good enough to make this a good movie, and not a mindless action flick.

(On a side note, if I could go back in time and get Victor Hugo to write a book about Kratos, it would be amazing.)
