Hmmm you might not understand some things in MGS2 if you haven't played MGS1. I would highly recommend playing through one as itis a fantastic game and I think you'd need more than just a brief summary to fully understand the story. MGS3 however is a prequel so I don't think you'd have any trouble with it. But if you're not going to buy MGS1 then I suggest reading up on its story, however I highly recommend it.
Well MGS Snake Eater takes place before any other MG or MGS game, but you would definitely have more appreciation for the story and pick up some of the subtle jokes and other things if you played MGS1, but its not necessarily required you can just Wiki MGS1 if you wanna get a summary of the story,but if you can find MGS1 in stores then pick it up but if not play MGS3 then 2.
if u can ..play the first one ..but if not play 3 and then 2 ....so u understand a little on the mgs2 history but if u can play the 1 then 2 and last the third one ....!! like went the games were released..!!
Why are they 2 versions of each game kinda? i dont know much on MGS but i tought i get em anyways.

i played 2 but didnt like it cuz snake dies but snake eater is awesome i love sliting enemy throats! but i recommened part one youll probable have to search through a couple of stores because its a ps1 game so it might be hard to find
because #3 story was before #2 ...but I recommend u too play the first one !! u would understand alot more the second (the 2 has a wierd story ) ..and then play #3 so u would already know alot stuff and realise what hapen before #1 and #2
