Its confirmed well atleast that there is a firmware 1.6 by sony till now for europe which would include ps2 software emulation and they said it would released along with the launch .

So there must be a firware for US too.

as for the proof.

I've heard those stupid rumors about the update being "today" or sometime sooner than the launch. I'm all for believing this, it should come out. I am look forward to this, as I have heard, you'll be able to multi-task. Meaning, listening to music while playing a quest in Oblivion. I hope this isn't a rumor, as you probably do, because the update seems major and applies some major changes. And, taking more advantage of all the PS3 has to offer. I think we can agree that this important. UT

That's the whole idea. Firmware updates would further expand the backwards compatibility of the PS3. It's kind of foolish for people to talk smack about compatibility when they didn't even have a firmware that utilizedt he software emulation yet. I'm still wondering if 1.6 will go live for japan and US before the euro launch. I could have sworn the idea was for it to go live while the euro-sets would have it pre-installed.

I wonder...why is sony so shady about its firmware updates? what's the harm in letting people know when it's coming and what will be in it? I just don't understand why they just don't let us all know.

my question is this.....if the 1.6 upgrade contains the software backward compatibility for the emotion engine-less PS3s, what kind of effect will that have on the PS3s that have the Emotion Engine? will it disable the emotion engine and strickly use the software emulation? or will the PS3 continue to use the hardware emulation and only use the software emulation where the hardware doesn't work correctly?

because they don't want to say what features are going to be in it and then the features not be there. they will wait until they get it finished so they know exactly what features are included.

I don't know if you have an Xbox 360, but announcing stuff ahead of time has done nothing but damage for it. I remember when they announced the spring 2006 dashboard update coming out on some day. The day came and MS said it was getting pushed back a couple days. Internet forums and such exploded with people pissed. You would have thought it was the end of the world. MS has now learned to not announce a date until they are 100% sure. That pretty much means it gets announced a day or two before it gets released. Even now, most Xbox Live Arcade games don't get announced until Monday when they come out Wednesday. People just get too upset when things aren't released on time.

Speaking at a European demonstration of Home and LittleBigPlanet yesterday, Harrison revealed that retail units will come pre-installed with firmware version 1.5. However, the backward-compatibility enabled firmware update (1.6) is being released on launch day, March 23. Harrison also promised that Sony would keep working to ensure the number of compatible titles increases with future firmware updates.

Because if they tell us that it comes out on such-and-such date, and it gets delayed, I have to sift through dozens of threads on this forum blasting Sony for not releasing it on time. No Release Date == No Delay.
