So i have been reading that its virtually painless to change out your hard drive for a larger one. I have a 40 gig ps3 and was thinking of getting a bigger hard drive has anyone replaced theres? If so how easy is it to do this?

Replaced with a 500 GB HDD.
Very easy.

Make sure you get the correct HDD.
You want a SATA/SATA2 Notebook 2.5"HDD.

It's possible to make a full backup by using a large external HDD.
Format it using a free program called FAT32Format.
Plug it in and perform the full system backup from system settings on your PS3.

On the same external HDD reconnect it back to your PC.
Go to the official PS3 website and download the latest firmware.
Extract it to the directory on your external HDD...

PS3/UPDATE

ALL CAPS.

Uncap the HDD cover on your PS3, unscrew and keep them safe.
Slide the casing and unscrew the holding screws. Keep them safe.
Do not touch any of the undersides of the HDD.
Keep your old HDD safe for warranty.

Replace with your new HDD and resrew and secure back in.
Its real easy, just a matter of sliding the casing back into the system the correct way.

Differs from US/EU model but all the same principle.

*EDIT*
The full backup will save all your save games, all game data including PSN downloads, music and movies.
Remember to sync yoru trophies to the server before swappign yoru HDD out.

It's extremely easy mate, the whole process will take you 5 minutes.

There is a great article here officially, at Gamespot page but I'll give you the link to even more easier one. ;)

Seems to be about $90. I put in a 250 GB in my PS3 recently and I think thats plenty of room but maybe you have a huge video/music library.

UK £64.99 inv VAT

Also, you wanna stick to a 5400RPM HDD.
Theres is no increase in performance on a faster drive and could have overheating problems.

That's a great deal on it. I've got the same one and i'd say go for 500 cause then you'll never have to worry about filling it up. I never have to delete anything now

I love you.

I pretty much copy and pasted your whole post onto a word document on my desktop called "HOW TO CHANGE YOUR PS3 HDD."

Any 5400RPM HDD will be ok.
Its just that if you get the faster ones, say a 7200RPM it could overheat since the enclosure is pretty tight.
