http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/30/40gb-ps3-features-65nm-chips-lower-power-consumption/

It's been revealed that the new 40GB PlayStation 3 features more than just a cut down hard disk drive. Sony has also thought to stick the 65nm version of the Cell inside the new console, reducing the power usage down to around 135 Watts (down from 200 Watts.) That means the console also runs cooler and quieter, which is always a plus for a device that usually resides in the living room. Sony also jiggled around a few other components by making the heat pipe smaller, swapping out the motherboard for a new version, and added a button battery to keep time when the system is off. Looks like potential PS3 purchasers will be looking forward to a less noticeable din then.

Sadly, no news on the 65nm RSX & combined blue-tooth/wifi chip on a south bridge.

That would be easy to put in, the 40gig is to take the 'cheap' consumer away from the PS2 market. That way they will only spend on blu-ray/PS3 games. (Unless they want a $399 dvd player) heh Trust me, it's more beneficial if people stop buying PS2 games BEFORE PS3's. o_O

How much quieter can it get? I mean my 60GB is almost silent cant hear it at all playing games at even a low volume . Would have to turn volume all the way down almost. I can hear a little on Blu Ray movies but only when volume is low and movie sceen is very quiet not enough to bother me. My other console sounds like a jet fighter ! Anyone know if a White PS3 coming to u.s.?

This is complete BS, and nothing more. This is Sony using the media to hype up some support for a widely panned version of the console. In truth, if it wasn't for the 360 having it's failures because of overheating and all the talk about them switching to 65nm process and how public all that has been, the gaming public wouldn't even know what the hell 65nm means or what it is.

Because of all that though, 65 nm is a bit of a hot button topic, and it gets idiots to go "WOOOOWWWW"because they think it means something. For the PS3, it doesn't mean anything, the console doesn't need a cooler running processor, yeah, it's good, but it isn't important.

Even the energy consumption, it's going to cut down some on your power bill each month, but 65 watts is hardly enough to jump up and down about, and again, that's peak, not average consumption. You would need a better data analysis of the PS3's power usage to know how much impact it really had.

The bottom line is, that the 40 gig is a piece of crap, it's slightly less of a piece of crap than the 20 gig, but not much less, and since that unit didn't sell worth the crap, Sony wants to put as much good light and PR on the 40 gig as it can, and if a few media outlets start saying it's more energy efficient, especially in the light of the fact that Winter is coming, all the better.

As they say, there is a sucker born every minute. I'll keep my 100% BC, 4 USB ported, full accompanyment of card readered up 60 gig PS3, thank you very much, and I'll save on my bills by turning down the thermostat a couple degrees and let that extra heat coming out of my PS3 make up the difference.

Yeah well Sony never made it out to be anything amazing. The only reason we know about it is because someone in Europe took their apart. So i don't see why your making a big fuss. Hell the move to 65nm is more important because it cuts down production costs than it is for overheating concerns.
