My 60 Gb model PS3 finally went out. The real problems are that I have a Blu-ray in the drive that I can't get out, and I never backed up my game data. So, the question now is should I send my (out of warranty) PS3 to Sony and risk them swapping out mine for another without copying my data / retrieving my blu-ray, or should I go with a local repair place?

Also, if I get it repaired by Sony, do I get a 1 year warranty to go with it?

Whats Wrong with your PS3? Do you know cause that would basically decide weather or not to send it away.

EDIT: No you do not get a 1 year warrenty if you send it away.

i wouldn't do either. Just get a new slim. Cances are your 60gb model will just mess up again because these "repairs" seem to be pretty temporary.

I see what your trying to say, but not everyone has enough money to just go out and buy a 300dollar console on the spot.

and repairs can go from 50-150 dollars. Anything more I wouldn't pay for.

IF you call sony you can buy more warrenty, i'm pretty sure.

DUDE, I had a 60 gig too. and got it repaired by sony (my dad said it cost over 200 CAD), and it broke down 4/5 months later [last month :(]. I think that's how sony is making their money - they KNOW fat ps3's are gonna break down after 2-3 years and they KNOW repaired ps3's will break down within half a year. Don't call me paranoid/cynical, b/c that's how profit organizations work: they make warrantees end before their products' life-spans come to an end. I haven't got mine repaired (yet), but I am planning to get a new slim! Please heed my advice and get a slim too, and keep your 60 gig if you're sentimental - that's what I'm doing, and i'm getting it refurbished down the road. I hope this helps! (In the mean while, I have a wii/ps2 to keep me busy).

what seems to be the problem? parts are pretty easy to find and you can probably find a small gaming store that repairs it. just pay for labor since odds are they're gonna charge a premium for the same part you find urself.

From all that I've read, it was either the contact between the chips and the heat sink (which I already took care of myself), or the power supply.

I need to get my Blu-ray out, and save my game files. I tried putting my hard drive in another PS3, but soon as I turned it on, it wanted to format my disk instead of letting me back up my game saves.

I just dealt with the very same problem no more than a week ago. First off, it's not very difficult to remove your blu-ray from the drive. Beware though that after removing a disc from the drive that the drive will remain locked. There is a very easy way to disengage the locking of your drive though. link Not the best picture quality, but it should help you out. Second, now you need to determine if your up for trying to fix your PS3 yourself or not. It's not overly difficult, but it does take a few hours to get through it. I recommend that you go to youtube and look up PS3 YLOD Gilksy fix. There are six videos which are numbered part 1, part 2 ... they will walk you through the fix. You will need some tools, a heat gun and thermal compound. Good luck.

Thank you. I got my Blu-ray out. :) Now, I'm going to see if I can fix my power supply. Worse comes to worse, I'll send it to be repaired, but I'm keeping my hard drive. They are more fragile than some people would like to believe.

if you dontwant to risk it take it to any shop in you areadont send it to sony as they willcharges are per labor per hour so you mightpayextra cash .

my 60 Gig is still working but its very precious for me so i bought a new ps3 and imported all the data from the 60 gig to the new one, just to save it from dying

The best thing is have a third party repair center repair the system. Reason is because you are able to keep all the data in tack on your HDD because you get your system back and not a refurbished one. Also taking the HDD out and thinking you can get the data off the drive via another PS3 or PC is not going to work. Each single PS3 has a set of security codes for each single system that loads into the HDD's data when it's installed into the said PS3. Gophermodes has a good track record and offer various services at a reasonable price.
