I have an extra 160gig 7200rpm Seagate sitting around. I know that he PS3 runs with a 5400rpm drive, but could I swap the 7200rpm drive with no problems? I know that it isn't a problem with computers because it will simply run the drive at 5400rpm, but does it matter with the PS3? Also, how do you install the new OS on the newly formated drive? Do you have to do it on a regular computer before you throw it into your system?
Seagate HDD...is this a 2.5" Notebook drive...I am going to assume it is not...and you will not be able to use that drive with your PS3....the RPM rating of the hard drive in the PS3 is 5400 RPMs thats the standard for a notebook drive...
And it doesnt void the warranty to swap out the drive.
If it's a 2.5" laptop drive with a SATA interface it will work even if it's 7200 rpm. BUT the general recommendation has been not to bother with 7200 rpm since it doesn't offer any real performance advantage on the PS3 and just generates more heat. I believe Gamespot or IGN or some other site did an article on a 7200 rpm swap and it worked fine but they didn't notice any additional performance so they didn't recommend it.
