Stupid move I think.

Whats the point? From the spec sheet, all that is different (between the 60GB and the 80GB) is the HDD size. Why bother when you can just change the HDD anyway with a HDD of your own choosing (so long as it is 2.5" SATA).

If they stick to that conversion rate, it looks like there might be a price drop. But seeing as how the price for a 60GB varies worldwide, I'm not sure there will be a price drop when this new SKU retails (if it does infact come to retail).

Yup, no EE Chip and an extra 20gb.  I am glad I got my PS3 when I did, I have a ton of PS1 and PS2 games that work perfectly.

Maybe you should state that it is for the Korean ps3 launch. Nobody knows if it is even releasing elsewhere.

Considering this SKU is the only SKU for the Korean launch, I wouldn't expect this to become a new SKU to market next to the 60 Gig anywhere else.

its said with tax, and doesn't korea have like a 12% tax or something really high like that. The price would be less than $550 USD even with the 6% I have here where I live

Still it wouldn't be a huge price difference.I would like to see a $100 dollar difference, that would be nice.

 Just buy a 60gb now ...

The 80gb model looks like it could be replacing the 60gb but only HDD is different ( and no EE+ES / PS2 hardware) also remember this is for PS3's launch in Korea ...

Just imagine how much more money you can get with the PS3 that has the EE chip in it still after they discontinue it! I wouldn't trade it for the world, the BC is great and I can update my own HDD when I feel it's necessary.

hmm it would seem that sony are planning on cutting costs by removing the EE chip from the next batch of PS3, just like they removed the EE chips before realsing it to europe and here in australia.

well since it wont affect us hear in australia (we never got a EE chip in ours in the first place) i guess i am glad i waited a little while before purchasing my PS3, the 80gig should be available down under in bout 6 months and hopefully at the same or lower price :D

just a quick reminder the 80 gig ps3 isnt sony's answer to elite its just to give new customers a better hardrive without upgrading and buying another hardrive. In other words its for those to lazy to learn or dont know how to upgrade

I don't understand what the big deal is about them cutting out the EE chip. Can't they just emulate its function so they don't spend as much on production without cutting features?

the problem is sony's emulation software sucks a $ $ and they cant play half the games properly, they need to fix it up, i soo hope they do cos i got a nice collection of ps1/2 games i adore.

Yes. And, technically, emulation IS better, but...I want to play my older games immediately.

Also, I want dependency to be hardware-based. I never liked the idea of firmware and I'm trying to put off using it for as long as I possibly can.

Stupid move. 60Gb is enough. And you can swap HDD if you want... so I don't see the point in a new SKU.

This may not be as stupid as it seems.  In Korea the PS3 $573 tax included, so could be it be $549.99 or $499.99 when launched in the U.S..

Bad move from Sony... They should of do that in the beginning, a 60gb and 80gb of choice for the consumer and not kill off the 20gb then release the 80gb version when they just not too recently launched their product globally.

I really doubt this is a new SKU. It's more likely that it just became cheaper to throw in an 80GB HDD than a 60GB, that's all. The original Xbox had a similar situation.

For anyone who wants a PS3, just buy one now. Really, 60GB is a lot...and if you want to runlinux too, then you're probably going to want a larger HDD than 80GB anyway.

Crazy87

they all so took out the Emotion Engine

Yup, no EE Chip and an extra 20gb. I am glad I got my PS3 when I did, I have a ton of PS1 and PS2 games that work perfectly.

Ya know the software emulation would be alot more successful and manageble....instead of shipping your PS3 in for work on the EE, they could just simply release firmware update to fix whateva problem there is.

It's just for a particular market like Korea. It's not coming to other areas cause it's not needed. Jeez, just read about it. Damn it, the gaming community has gone to hell in a hand basket!
