Hey, I do not own any console games, but want to buy one for my son. Help me with a newb question, for I am a PC gamer. What is the difference between the 80, 60, 20 gig models (apart from gig size.) If the games come on a disc, are played off the disc, what is the hard drive used for?

The 80 gig uses emulation to play PS1/2 games. 90% of that library will work on it, and I am sure they will update it at sometime. The 60 and 20 gig have the Emotion Engine and 100% PS1/2 compatability. The 80 gig is going to become the mainstream from what I hear. Most people think once they sell there stock of 60 gigs the 80 will be stripped of Motorsorm and the extra ontroller and become 499 like the current 60. I would just wait and see. That or buy a 60, there is nothing wrong wit them, and all of them play the same games. Just with varying hd space.

Also note that the 20GB does not come with built-in wireless or any Memory Card readers. That's why that version was considered the "gimped" version. The 60GB is the most FULL featured version. It has the Emotion Chip (for PS2 games). The 80GB will only support software emulation for PS2 games. But as EMERICa6969 said. They expect that version to get software updates if need be. Depends on demand for "crappy PS2 game" BC. I think it was 88% games are BC for the 80GB. Europe already has a 60GB emulation version so I've heard. The HDD is for saving music, movies, trailers, updates and some game data. Some games will play from the Blu-ray. Other off-load data for faster loading times. Just depends on the game. Plus, you use the HDD for PSone and PS2 memory card saves (unlimited). No more buying PS2 memory cards.

They added the HDMI to the 20GB at the last minute. But it does not have the built-in wireless.

Differences

20gb -> No WiFi, no memory card slots ( for SD / mini-SD / memory card DUO / Compact Flash)
60gb -> Base console ... has everything
80gb -> No EE for Backwards Compatibility ( uses software ... same result different method)

The Harddrive is used to save games, install games(optional and title specific) and to store music, videos, photo's aswell as content downloaded off the PlaySatation Store ( a online store where you can download demo's, trailers(for movies and games) for free and buy downlaodable games )
** Also note if you run out of HDD space you can delete game installs (dosn't affect your save game), or trailers/music/demo/photo's you don't want.

I would reccomend a 60gb PS3 at the moment because its the best value at $499, also if you want / require a larger HDD you can replace the HDD at will.( though 60gb will be plenty ... i have games installed / 30 trailers / 200 songs and like 35gb free space left.) This process is explained in the manual - it does NOT void your warrenty and any 2.5" SATA HDD will work ...

*** PS3 also uses DLNA which means if you connect your PS3 to your computer via Ethernet or WiFi and have a Media Server ( like Windows Media Player 11) PS3 can access that content from your PC ...
