seems there is a long thread about drive failures. would appreciate clarification of the terms they are using. they mention the blue ray drive failing. Is there a separate drive for movies and games? Or is it just one tray for both. I have no intention to play movies on it. Does that make a difference? The common comment is that the PS3 will fail roughly after a year or so.

They use the same tray. Even if you don't play movies on it you still have a small chance of getting YLOD. A PS3 can live beyond a year I have had a 40GB for about 2 years no and it's still running good.

yeah ive ready many posts there about the fail's. honestly i dont know what to say because clearly drive failures are happening because many people keep saying it, but personally ive never had a problem, and ive had my 60 gb ps3 since the release, BUT i did change my HDD just because i wanted more space, roughly 1 year after i bought the system,

Just make sure your PS3 has room to breathe, don't put it in a small area like inside a media table, etc. Also make sure you don't play for several straight hours, turn it off and let it cool down before you decide to play again. Once in a while, clean out the vents. The PS3 tends to heat up faster and sometimes you can hear the fan blowing on full speed. You can use a vacuum to suck out the dust or if you have an air compressor you can use that too but make sure you have atleast 1 or 2 inch gap from the machine. Keep those in mind and your PS3 should have a longer life spand.

ok i have done my studies on this and i would like to point out. If u have a driver fail u will most likely not get the ylod of death just wont read the discs. Ur ps3 is more likely to fail from the cpu/gpu failing to connect to the mother board. this happens becuase ur ps3 gets too hot. in order to prevent this u dont play ur ps3 to the point where ur eye balls are out of thier sockets bleeding. u need to be careful of the heat ur ps3 is producing and need to stop playing and turn out ur ps3 for a 1 hour at most to let it cool down. or another reason u get the ylod of death is the power supply. well there is not u can do here just have ur ps3 on a power surge so it wont blow when ur home is hit by lighting and thats it. so ur driver is not likely to fail u should be careful on how long u play

Yeah, failure seems to happen mostly to the 60GB models.

thanks - that did help a bit. still seems to be a crap shoot when it comes to electronics. have had a Wii for 2 years, the cats have knocked it off once or twice and it still runs fine, so go figure.

I had a PS3 that died after only 4 months. The drive wouldn't read any type of discs. Also, check eBay. Last time I looked there were loads of faulty PS3's on eBay for sale. Looks like the failure rate is quite high. It's not too surprising. The PS2 also had high failure rate due to the disc drive dying.
