you need to use the optical out on the PS3... I'm pretty sure that is the only audio solution avalible to you.
Ok, a few things...
I get the feeling you already know this, but I'm going to write it anyways. DVI does not support audio... it is a video only format... once you convert away from HDMI you lose the audio stream over that cable. Also, you need to tell the PS3 how you want it to send it's audio stream.
DVI only transmits video signals, so the sound signal of the HDMI output is lost. It's a pretty simple fix though.
Use the cable that came with the PS3 for sound. You just need to find some speakers or a receiver to plug the red and white (left and right audio) cables into and you'll have sound. You just need to set the appropriate settings: Video = HDMI, Audio = RCA/SCART.
You don't need the optical cable like some other posters said. However, if you have a stereo system that supports it, go for the optical connection. It has much better sound quality than the old-school RCA cables.
HDMI and DVI both send all digital signals from a source to a display. The two are compatable with each other, but when using a DVI to HDMI cable you lose the audio signal over that cable.
-HDMI sends both video and audio
-DVI sends only video
You can use any computer monitor you want as long as it SUPPORTS 480p/720p/1080i/1080p
edit: it only needs to support one of the above formats, but the more the better.
In order to get sound from the PS3 when using a HDMI-to-DVI cable you will have to use either the audio portion (red and white)of the Composite cables that came with the system or use a toslink cable on the Digital out (optical) port.

This guy said it the best. I do the same thing on the Hotel TV because I take my PS3 with me when I travel. The hotel I stay at has an HDTV but does not have an HDMI input to it rather it has a DVI input. So I purchased an HDMI to DVI cable to hook it up to the TV. The problem is that DVI accepts only video, so you need to output sound as well. You can do that via AV cables (red and while) or using an optical cable. if you do that, you need to go into your sound settings and change the setting to output the sound using whatever cable you're using. I personally use an optical cable. It's awesome for sound, but av will do just fine
You can not use HDMI/DVI cables with ur ps3 if the monito is not HD compliant.. its a fact the cables dont let the ps3 downscale to 720p, when you try to hook this kind of set up to a monitor you will get a black screen, this is because the monitor can not support HD! that is the only flaw with the ps3, yet its the most annoying oneBishop1310
But 720p is HD. You're contradicting yourself.
