Blu-Ray is just a new format. Just like VHS and BetaMax are two different formats. Ironically BetaMax was Sony's format just like Blu-Ray is. Let's just hope they don't meet the same ending.

Blu-Ray is currently the opposing format of HD-DVD from Toshiba.

Worht 500? You need to ask yourself that question. PS3 has the potential to offer you the best games this generation.

I like the fact that the PSN is free, unlike XBL which you pay $50 a year. Think about this, within 2 years you would be paying more for the 360 than you would for the PS3 (assuming you would go with the Premium).

Don't forget to go to Circuit City, they are offering a free extra Sixaxis with a PS3 purchase.

You don't NEED an HDTV but it looks better.

I can't say about online, I don't have a PS3 yet either. I haven't heard anything bad about the online except that you can't bring up your friends list ingame. I think that that problem will be revised with a new update.

The online is great. Not laggy at all. You can enjoy Blue Ray movies and game on any TV because the PS3 will actually downscale it for your TV. And don't worry, it doesn't look bad on a normal TV, I don't have an HDTV either.

Online is solid, I have one and its great and FREE. Motorstorm, Rainbow six, and Resistance are the biggest online games for the PS3 and they run solid and smooth.

Yeah Blue ray still looks excellent on a standard def tv. All PS3 games are made on blue ray disc so that means much more content can be added to a single disc. I have a PS3 and I can say the free online service is better than most people think, you play with friends chat with eyetoy, headset, send text messages and download demos and movie trailers in the store, and did I mention its all free! You can also full games and old school games in the PS Store for usually around $5.00 to $20.00. I don't own an HDTV although I plan to very soon, but again to answer your question you don't need it just looks better if you do.

correction. You NEED an HDTV for blu-ray. Blu-ray is high definition. blu-ray will look like a normal DVD if played on a regular TV. If you want to get the most out of blu-ray movies, you need an HDTV.

100% correct! Blu-ray will look just like your DVDs on a regular tv. Blu-ray is a high definition disk that outputs a much higher resolution than a regular tv. Your tv is only capable of displaying 480 lines of resolution, where HDTVs display 1080 lines of resolution. All that will happen is that the movie on blu-ray will be downscaled to display 480 lines or resolution for your tv, which is identical to what DVDs output.

As far as lag goes--I have played Resistance, Motorstorm, Rainbow Six Vegas, and Need for Speed online. All of those games run like butter, except NFS. NFS had some lag problems, but the others are perfect. Considering I have heard that the other system has lag in nearly all of their games, and they pay for online, I think a free nearly lagless online is far superior. It is true that live offers more bells and whistles, but by the end of the year so will PSN through firmware updates. I think that most likely the services will offer the same bells and whistles by the end of this year and PSN is free!

For $499 you would be crazy not to pick up a PS3 right now, particularly if you have an HDTV. The features it boasts at that price point are unmatchable. People interested in a Blu Ray player ought to just consider buying a PS3, it offers the best playback of the format and also functions as a gaming device/multimedia center.

Here are some features you will be happy to know your PS3 can do:

Streaming: You can stream files (videos, movies and images) from your PC to your PS3. This is extremely seamless in WMP 10.

Gaming: Of course, the games are coming and they will be getting better and better. Uncharted : Drakes Fortune reportedly runs only about 30-50% of the PS3s power. MGS4, Ratchet and Clank, Resistance, Killzone, Warhawk, and many more all look to be great franchise games to hop into.

Movies: When you eventually upgrade to an HDTV the quality you will notice in a Blu Ray disc is unnegotiable. It looks crystal clear like any HD display. The real money maker though is the software upscaler in the PS3. Simply pop in your any DVD and the PS3 will upscale it to full HD resolution. The difference is huge and even techies are impressed with how well the system does this.

Online: Free and the PS store keeps improving. Promised soon are downloadable music and videos of movies and tv shows. Firmwire updates are frequent and download speeds move along quickly. Young children are often absent from PS3 online games bc of the systems high price point. Mics will be standardized with Warhawk very soon. Lag is unnoticable and you can manage and message friends etc.

Reliability: Unlike other consoles on the market (one in particular with an astonishing 33% failure rate) the PS3 has no hardware problems to speak of. Take care of your console and it will take care of you. It truly is a quality product.

Overall I am extremely happy with my PS3. The absence of games is about to wear off. Rainbow Six Vegas will tide me over until games like Madden, Warhawk, MGS, Ratchet, and KZ2 hit later this year/next. I am very happy with my $600 purchase and would STRONGLY advise picking one up at $499.

Nlu-ray is Sony's high-definition format. If you don't have an HDTV I suggest you restrain from buying Blu-ray and save money buying more DVD's. Personally, yeah I think the PS3 is worth its price it has so much to offer. Extra features? Well, it has Wi-fi (Wireless internet access), it has a free online service, maybe not as good as Xbox Live is now but hey PSN has just started its lifespan it will grow eventually, it has memory card slots for easy transfer of photos, songs, and video. Oh it also has Folding@Home which basically helps finding a cure t many of today's diseases like cancer, AIDS, Alzheimer, etc. And best of all: reliability, it wont break out like Xbox 360 does (I've had my PS3 on for almost 7 days straight and nothing happened :D)

Oh and the online is not laggy at all, though Rainbow Six Vegas' online is a bit laggy but nothing to be concerned about
