OK, admit it. You hate Soul Caliber 4 but were afraid to admit it until I brought up the subject. I can't believe the good reviews it is getting. If like me, you are strictly single player, this game is a total waste. The single player mode is a joke. The characters are so boring you can fall asleep during a match, and there is little motivation to play single player more than an hour, ever.

In addition, I still think that this game is like a movie set in which the stage hands wait for the actors and director to go home and then they play with the props. Because the weapons do no damage I keep thinking they are movie props.

And while I like panties as much as the next man, the sexual stuff is way out of hand. I am sure my gay friends enjoy stipping the men down to loin cloths, but even that gets old soon.

Anyone agree?

In a fighting game, I heard that they capitalize on "TWO players"...hence the versus matches being one on one and nothing else. At least that's what I heard. But I will go on and say that the new narrator needs to be....*Fill in the blank.*

Well fighting games rarely have good story mode, so character personality = worthless.

Virtua Fighter 5 don't even have story in the game.... it's atually on instruction manual.

I'd say Soulcaliber is my least favorite fighting game franchise (minus non-sense fighting games like Dragon Ball and Naruto, etc)

Still, it is good mutton mashing fun. I like character creation, and that alone often is worth the money.

I don't consider Soulcaliber serious fighting game, so I don't get deep into it by trying to raise my skill level so I can get all the air-juggles down or anything, but as casual fighting game it has good moments.

Although I am bit disappointed by the fact that Soulcaliber uses weapons as main selling point, but it doesn't really give that feeling of using weapon. Bushido Blade felt more authentic weapon based fighting game as you can defend yourself with attack since weapon and weapon clashing each other can neutralize the effect. Soulcaliber plays like any other 3D brawler. Block, Hit, and throw, which lacks the feel of sword fighting.

Still, that doesn't mean I hate the game. I think it's alright fighting game with plenty of elements to make the game entertaining. Just don't take the game seriously.... especially when they are trying so hard to be not taken serious.

What are you talking about?

About SC's weapons, I guess you've gotta use your imagination.
In Street Fighter: Third Strike, Akuma's ending showed him meditating deep underwater, then he torn a ship apart with nothing but his spin-kick move
In the Dragonball universe, even when Goku's a kid he was strong enough to take a sniper rifle shot to the face and not get a scratch, but there were still people strong enough to fight him hand to hand.

In the Bleach anime, spirit energy is explained a little. The main character ends up manifesting his spirit as a sword or Zanpaktou. He then fights in the Spirit World to free his friend from execution. He encounters a strong opponent who explains energy. One energy is the Reiki, the latent energy that surrounds a being, and the other, focused energy used for attack or defense that has been manifested as his Zanpaktou. Ichigo's focused energy wasn't as great as Zaraki Kenpachi's latent energy, so he couldn't even scratch him with his sword.

I think that's why people aren't defeated in one blow unless the Soul Crush happens.

@Two posts above: It's not really a button mashing casual game if the hardcore can own the casuals in it because of the word "depth". It's hard to call Soul Cali a button masher without adding Dead or Alive and Tekken into that area as well.

I was a huge fan of soul calibur on dreamcast , i rush in on the 29 to get sc4 and frankly yes im very disapointed( been playing Battlefield bad company the last 2 days, thats how much i like sc4 ) .....I dont hate the game but the fact that there is no teambattle just suck hardcore....and the single player well im not a big single player fan but they should of called the game Soul Calibur Online and drop the **** story mode.

The game definatly deserve something like 7 definaly not 8.5 or 9 but then again its only my opinion :)

I compare Soul Caliburs structure to Diablo II. The basic structure is casual, ideal for new comers, as did Diablo II, who doesnt remember how easy it was to reach level 10? Or 20? In fact, Blizzard announced that most of their B-net characters reached 20-25 and started a new one. Why? Because the first levels where extremely casual, no real challenge and could be played by anyone, my mother played Diablo (never got past act 1 though.

Soul Calibur IV uses the same structure. Some moves were casualized, to integrate new comers, but even if you can manage to kill the AI in that fashion, you can forget to do so against someone else. SC has 5 different defense moves: Block, Counter, Parry, 8 Way and Clash

Block is performed by simply holding the defense button, its the most casual of defenses and is in every game.

Counter is performed by a precise timing in the pressing of the defense button, it repels the enemy attack and lets them for a fraction of second without guard.

Parry is similar to counter, only that it throws the enemy to the ground. Its performed by a timed defense and a directional input.

8 Way is a dodge mechanic that will let you possitionate on the back of the opponent, its not easy to pull though.

Clash is similar to counter, but its timing depends on the move. Basically, its the 2 weapons hitting each other at the same time, this has to be timed precisely, and depends heavily on the speed of your move.

But this techniques are not alone. SC uses single button combinations and dual button combinatios. The basic combos of each of these are easy to pull, but the deeper moves are harder, more effective and far more destructibe.

I think when a game doesn't really require you to learn the moves, I'd say it is quite casual game.

I happen to just mash buttons and manage to stay competitive. Sure I don't win most of the times, but considering how little I know about the game, I can stay competitive for good amount of match is bad sign of depth. Soulcaliber is only fighting game I can not practice and beat the game without trouble.

Is Dead or Alive ever considered serious fighter? I pretty much put that in DBZ and Naruto category. Ok maybe 1 tier above and put them in Bloody Roar and Motal Kombat category.

Tekken I think is more serious fighter compared to Soulcaliber. Many of the characters in Tekken are very restrictive with movement and skills. There is some learning curve involved and difference between skills among players are much more clear cut.

As 3D fighting game goes, I think Virtua Fighter is most serious fighting game. I think no other 3D fighting game shows the level of difference in skills like Virtua Fighter does. Intermediate players and experts show great amount of skill difference. If you are slighty better than other player, 7 out of 10 times you will win even though difference in skill isn't vast.

Also Virtua Fighter don't have random select in character selection. That's how you need to dig deep with each other. Without know how to use certain character, chances are you will only get frustration instead of fun in Virtua Fighter, unless you are playing CPU in easy.

Just compared to other fighting game franchise out there, I'd say Soulcaliber comes close enough to a button masher.

not knowing the moves and just knowing the timing when to mash the buttons is enough to win at decent rate. I'd say that is classic button masher.

It's because regardless of what you think, Fighting games have evolved since the PS1 era. :P @Triangle: Can't comment. I'm still 15 days too early to get into a debate of any sort. :P:cry:

It doesnt matter to me which one I think is better Tekken or Soulcalibur since I love both of them (Tekken a little more but thats just because its the first one I played) But to say SouCalibur is a lot of button mashing could be pushing it. If a button mashing casual was going against a skilled soulcalibur player who can make good use of the gaurd impacts, and 8 way run, he would own the button masher like nothing. So I would say you would be able to see the difference in skill if the two were to go against each other.

I guess I use the term "button masher" loosely.

I was simply saying if a player is familar with 3D fighter (like me) then Soulcaliber is little too easy to adjust.

Many character uses practically same move input, just different effect. After couple of rounds, it's not difficult to find out good timing for those moves. After that, it's the usual rock paper scissors with combo, block, and throw.

Once you get to that point, even without know much about the character move set, you can manage to be relatively competitive. Virtua Fighter, and Tekken requires you to know more about characters specifically into greater depth in order for you to get to that competitive level.

Thus I call it "button masher"

Thus I call it "button masher"

I see what you mean by same button input because everyone has for example a B+K or A+B etc. but at the same time though each character has their own unique movesets (Sophitia is the only one with the double angel step) Ivy has her own unique chain whip stances and some of the whip stances can vary. Or Talim has the wind roll etc. So i would say yes, some charcters have the same similar inputs but if you want to go even deeper into learning a specific charcter you'll see a ton of moves and inputs that are unique from everyone elses.

Tekken has more moves than Soul Calibur not only on the games command list but also hidden ones that aren't displayed in the movelist of the game, and yes I will defininetly agree about having to really learn your character in order to compete, as I always spend hours in practice mode to learn differnet juggle combos and such. But I can say the same about SoulCalibur. As far as learning curve I think the order goes Virtua Fighter, Tekken, then soulcalibur with virtua fighter being the highest. So yeah if you play a lot of 3D fighters you will adjust to soulcalibur pretty easily. But the good thing about a easier learning curve is that once you finally learn you can start developing your strategies accordingly.

I will have to disagree with the rock paper scissors effect because with Rock Paper Scissors, you have to completely guess, but with soulcalibur (like any fighting game) you have to know your opponents habits and make "educated predictions" to make your next move. If I were to just completely guess what my opponent would've done in some challenging online fights I've run into, I would have had my @$$ handed to me instead of come out on top.

From the comments I have seen it looks like I am one of only a couple of people who care about the weapons being impotent. Perhaps I need to do a better job, as someone hinted, using my imagination. Or perhaps I just need to stay away from games in which characters have giant weapons that do not do any damage. Freud might have some comments but he died before Playstation 1, much less 3. Big weapons that can't do damage, hmmmm, OK, forget it.

I totally agree. I think all SC games are trash ever since the Dreamcast one. Does this game even have a combo system? Another series being milked, just like Mortal Kombat. The only fighting games I ever enjoyed were Street Fighter 2 and Mortal Kombat 2. After that, nothing could compare. And the Star Wars characters Darth and Yoda sucked.. they put the Star Wars name to shame. They shouldnt have been put in the game. I feel sorry for Darth Vader and Yoda and for the Star Wars name.

I dont hate it, but it is not that great, 3 was better then 4. 4 has a good quaility "online"single player isnt that good, its ok at best. i wouldnt recommend buying this game to anyone, but to only rent. it gets old fast. if ppl are pleased with their purchase, im happy for you, however i wish I wouldnt of payed so much for it.

Get's old fast is right. A story line might have helped, or decent new characters, better stages and better single player modes. A payoff for winning arcade mode would not have hurt, rather than just the privilege of starting all over again.

Anyone agree?earlaps

You aren't alone. I played SC3 at my friends about half a year ago, I dunno what he finds so fun about it? The games suck. Boring as hell. Total waste on money. I'm more pleased spending $70 on BF:BC Gold Edition.
