I know there has been an oblivion thread recently but I was wondering what y'all thought of the difficulty level. I am having a pretty hard time just starting out and find my character to be pretty weak (can't even pass the first mission when you first pass through the oblivion portal). Anyone else find this to be a difficult game or do i just suck :(

Difficult. I havent played more then an hour but my brother also said it was very hard at times and annoying too. He passed the first gate and has the guys soon but sometimes he hits him by accident and then he starts attacking him or when he got caught pick pocketing an officer is still chasing him everywhere its ridiculous.

if you are talking about the first quest to go to kvatch, let me in on a lil secret; you can level your cahracter up quite a bit before you do any of the main quest. I know it isn't a secret, but I was at least level 10 before i went into kvatch (the first oblivion gate). So take you time and do some side quests and spilunking before you tackle kvatch and the subsequent main quests. Or if you are having a REALLY hard time, turn the difficulty down, you can do so at the main menu before you load your game. good luck!

Overly simple to me, for kvatch, at low levels, block block attack block block attack block block repeat, win, enemies level with you, so, it's a very very easy game, even on higher difficulty levels, and to be honest, the combat is always the same, best way to kill the first enemy you face, is identical to the best way to kill the highest level enemies...which is slightly different depending on class.

No, at this point, you probably just suck. It's nothing against you, but you need to play the game to find out what style of play you are. The possibilities of this game are almost endless.

YEah it can be pretty hard when your first starting out. My GF is having issues with it right now actually. My advice is to save often and prepare before you start a mission. Make sure to bring lots of healing potions and repair hammers. You'll get the hang of it eventually.

One more thing when your fighting someone try to block thier attacks with a shield and then hit them twice.

Block - slash - slash - block. Worked great for me.

Meh, its not too bad, youll get the hang of things pretty quickly, but if you are finding things a little too hard or too simple you can always go to the gameplay options and shift your difficulty to easier or harder levels if youre getting too annoyed

You can play for weeks before heading to the Kvatch Oblivion gate. Unlike other games, Leveling does not always make you stronger than the enemies. My advice would be to read a FAQ or a portion of a walkthrough that describes leveling. You don't need to "Power Level" but it's good to know what causes you to level up and how to get +5 to your attributes (like strength, endurance, willpower, etc.) when leveling instead of always getting +2.

I still struggle when I have to fight more than 2 enemies...

You could use the scroll duplication cheat (the only cheat in the PS3 Oblivion) to get money and buy strong weapons and armour

Get a bunch of scrolls (the number depends on how many u want)

double click the scrolls really fast and than drop the item u want dupicated

make sure there is only 1 and not mulitpe stuff

...good advice but dont level too much...i did half of kvatch and thought i was done but realized i had more like 10 levels later...talk about near death experiences...being a bowman with those spider chiks chasing after you is really hard....

Yea there are lots of quests to do in every town. Level up a bit, learn ner spells and tackle Kvatch later. Or you can turn down the difficulty.

Is it just me, or does it seem like spells are so ineffective compared to physical attacks and drinking pots to heal.

Sometimes the difficulty really irks me. Oblivion makes me save compulsively for the fear i will die after every enemy encounter bc the enemies level with you. You can compensate though by using magical weapons, sneak attacking them with range attacks where they can't see you. Some enemies like the painted trolls in the stuck in a painting quest or the frost monster in tears of savior quests are a royal pain

I read someones post where he said leveling up doesn't necessarily make you stronger than your enemies he is correct because some enemies get stronger as you do. The point of leveling up isn't getting stronger physically really its about getting stronger mentally. As you play you'll figure out certain spells and swordfighting techniques that best fit you.

Like me for instance I too struggled at the beginning of the game. I was getting my but handed to me if I happened upon a group of enemies. So what I did at first was to summon creatures, the creatures were fairly weak, but I only needed them to act as an distraction while I attacked the enemy from behind. Another technique I tried was if I happened upon more than one enemy I would get into a narrow passage way where I could fight them one at a time. So you could try some of these techniques if you think they will help.

I didn't mention I was a redguard which automatically gives you a spell you can cast once a day that fortifies everything and almost makes you inhuman.

you can also use my technique where I just jump on top of a big rock and fire arrows at the enemy until they die, ogres are target practice. NOTE: this doesnt work for archers, spellcasters, and brown bears (they tend to clip up to your high spot, totally lame but whatever I just summon my storm atronach and do the back power attack until they fly back then do the foward power attack)
