I want it mostly for the backwards compatibility since my PS2 is with my friend right now and is irretrievable. I dont want to get a modern PS3 and then a PS2 also. Will all new software/firmware updates work with the first generation? Are there any hardware problems with the first generation? I heard they discontinued the Hardware emulation because it was too expensive. Not a problem with the hardware itself.

Thanks!

Not really a big problem. Once you hook your PS3 up to the net you will download all the recent updates just fine. There is one big problem though. If you buy this console and something does manage to happen to it, you will be out of luck since you bought it used. I really suggest just buying a new PS3 that comes with a free one year warrenty(I think). Buying a used PS3 just to get B/C is abit of a risk. Once you get your PS3 for a good while you will be more intune to buying and playing PS3 titles.

No. All the updates work...no reason for them not to. I have had mine since launch day with no problems. I have read that the fans are a little louder sometimes though i can't say for sure as I have never compared the two. Some people have got the yellow light issue though I am not sure if it is more prevalent with 60GB models or not.

I actually would like to buy another 60GB model when I get extra money as a backup if mine ever breaks.

The original 60GB models have the oldest (and largest, and hottest) processors and GPUs, and as a result are more prone to the yellow light of death.

The 60GB is the last one to play PS2 games if you care and it has 4 usb slot instead of 2 like the new ones. Id say get it man, as i have one.

The last one to play PS2 titles was the original 80 gig, even though that version only played 75-80% of the PS2 titles.

Let me rephrase that, The 60 is the last to use Emotion Engine which was the best for playing almost all ps2 games.

I wish i had the EE PS3 but you cant go wrong with MGS4 bundle that i was lucky to get back in August. Amazon recently restock the MGS4 bundle and sold alot. This shows a BC PS3 has a high demand and Sony should take advantage.

I have a launch day 60 GB PS3, and it hasn't given me any problems whatsoever. I highly recommend getting one, especially if BC is a selling point for you.

They seem to be the only models really that suffer from the YLOD, and I'm sure buying a used model would not help matters... I wouldn't recommend it.

i have an b/c 80 gb and I've been able to play all my ps2 games the only game so far I've heard of that hasn't worked is arc tonelico 2. anyway if you're looking for a b/c PS3 i'd get the 80gb MGS4 bundle off of amazon. they still have them for $499.99.

all good advice but im surprised no one mentioned the lense failure. Ive met a handful of people (including myself) whom have had the lense fail. Im on a 80gb motorstorm bundle system but a buddy with a 60gb also had the same problem. Id say buy a new one with a warranty of some sort that way if anything goes wrong, you can get a new one swapped out.

one other thing concerning hardware in 60s is that the BC and that sctructure was generating a lot of heath, i know dozens of ceses where PS3 60 was overheathing, making too much noise, getting YLOD. so i wouldnt go that way if there is no warantee

I'd like to point out another feature of older PS3's that gets overlooked, IMO. The memory card slots that are under the flip lid on the left side of the system. I love those ports for transferring pictures from my digital camera, or putting movies on my PSP's memory card and watching them on my tv. I would miss that feature more than BC if I were to have to buy a new model PS3.

A got a launch day 60GB PS3, no problems with it except that it gets noisy fast. I'm pretty sure I just got to open it up and take out all the dust though. During the last year ( I've had it for three) it's been getting louder quicker so I guess I'll have to stop being lazy and clean it.

Surprisingly it's the most reliable model with the lowest failure-rate.I've had mine since the U.S launch and haven't had any issue with it.
