So, do you guys cross your fingers and hold tightly on your pants every time you install an update, knowing that if there is a blackout during the process your precious $600 PS3 will become as useful as a brick ?

I'm thinking of getting a battery backup before I make any more updates because of that.......

What do you guys think ?

Nah, I can understand why, but I usually download the update via a PC and then use a flash drive to update. This cuts down on having to leave the PS3 on during the download and it makes (strictly in my opinion) copying and updating more efficient since downloading from the PSN can be slow.

Also, it's rare to have a blackout here in Minnesota.

Where I live doesn't matter. Blackouts can happen anywhere, anytime.

Uh, No. It doesn't even cross my mind and I don't think anything that drastic would happen to the system besides starting the update all over.

No, you see, the downloading part doesn't matter. If there was a blackout while you were downloading nothing would happen. The problem is the install process. Those 1-2 minutes. If a blackout occurs during that time, BAM ! PS3 to the trash can !

Nothing drastic ? Then why do you think the system tells you to NOT unplug it or shut it down during the process ? It's because the flash memory is being written, and if the system gets turned off for any reason, your system will be screwed up.

lol, yeah you're just paranoid.  My advice to you, when you're updating......walk away.  I'm just imagining you sitting in front of your TV with sweat dripping down your face as the percentage slowly works it's way to 100.  All of sudden, at 90%, your phone rings, scares the crap out of you, and you spill your Red Bull all over the system.  :P

You're not getting it. Blackouts CAN happen. Have you read the part that says:

"If you turn off your PS3 during the update, you may not be able to restart the system again".

Have you read that ?

I'm in the same boat, where I live we sometimes get blackouts for no good reason. Just randomly shuts off. I can not count how many times I have been playing a game and everything turns off. Out house is on a really old circuit that needs to be updated without a doubt, so yeah I have this same fear. I think if it killed my PS3 I would just kinda stare at the blank screen for a day before freakin out.

Well, if you know an update is coming and you are really worried about updates that might brick your system(it happend for some with the Xbox 360) then you can wait a few hours/days and check the internet/fourms/your friends if the update is safe.

And another thing, about "you may not be able to download the update again", it can happen anytime, lets say you save game data, if you turn off your system or something happends to the system that it turns off then your save can be damage, like anything, but did it happen to alot of people? no, so don't worry!

In other words, don't worry about these things! be positive! :D

Blackouts happen like less than once a year, the chances that you will be in that particular distant day updating your ps3 on the exact moment the power goes in that 24 hours, is so remote its not worth worrying about.

Its like saying 'Anyone scared of updating the ps3 incase a plane crashes into my house and breaks it?'

It's just a general warning, not "be warned, it's gonna happen."  I think you let it get the best of you.  Unless something similar has happened to you in the past, then it's something to not worry about.  I'd hate to think that you really feel that way everytime you have to update.

And it's not that I don't undertstand, I think we all know what your trying say.  The fact is, it's such a rare event that, yes could happen to somebody, but the chances are minimal to even worry about on a regular basis.

The update only screws your ps3 if the power goes out during the installation, not the downloading. I know this from experience :P. I was moving a smaller tv (still plugged into the surge protector) while I was updating and my entire surge protector popped out *gasp*. The update was still in the downloading phase, so it still works. The actual installation doesn't take long at all.

Would a powerloss really destroy the firmware in the system?
Most products I know of have fail-safes against that sort of thing, where the firmware can just be reinstalled to full factory reset at home through a sort of safe-boot. [I think iPods are most known for being able to do this.]

I kind of assumed thats what would happen if the PSP somehow popped its battery while updating, at least. I never tried it with mine so... hmm.

Really? The last time we had a black out in the U.S. was in 2001 (a major one at least.) I can understand if you live in tornado ally or something, but seriously worrying about blackout is 2007? What country are you in?

Blackouts are rare where I live, but brownouts are not - and they can do lots of damage. Most houses here have backup generators installed that kick in whenever the power goes out or the current drops, though.

The good thing about brownouts are that a surge protector (specially designed for brownouts) has a chance of saving your electronics. In a blackout, a surge protector really can't help you.

i worry about this every time i update, its not paranoia its called i paid 600 dollars and dont want my ps3 to become a huge paper weight. to the people saying get a surge protector. how would that help in any way? if theres a blackout theres no more power which means the ps3 turns off. a surge protector regulates the voltage so theres no voltage spikes, don't really know how that helps. to the people saying reformat the hard drive that wouldn't do anything. blackouts happen randomly not only in thunderstorms im sure at least one person will have this happen to them at some point but im sure sony would replace you ps3 if not than that would really suck.

I read the whole warranty, and i dont think they will. This is one thing people really need to tell Sony to fix. Either give us a damn fail-safe or replace it for free.

did this actually happen to anybody? cause my friend was installing the system update (1.51 or 1.54 i forget) and we were on our way to go skiing so he just shut off his ps3 while it was installing, and when we got back he turned it on and it asked him to update again, the thought about the system being corrupt because of this never even occurred to us. i know this is a problem with the psp but the ps3?........

This is a bigger concern on the PS3 than on the PSP, because the PSP runs on a battery, so as long as you update with a full battery there's no need to worry about power outages. On the other hand, the PS3 has no battery, it runs directly from the power supply. You guys got really lucky. Don't let it happen again.

i worry about this every time i update, its not paranoia its called i paid 600 dollars and dont want my ps3 to become a huge paper weight. to the people saying get a surge protector. how would that help in any way? if theres a blackout theres no more power which means the ps3 turns off. a surge protector regulates the voltage so theres no voltage spikes, don't really know how that helps. to the people saying reformat the hard drive that wouldn't do anything. blackouts happen randomly not only in thunderstorms im sure at least one person will have this happen to them at some point but im sure sony would replace you ps3 if not than that would really suck.
