I've actually got quite a few PS3 games I'd like to get my hands on yet - old and upcoming, and I may even buy another PS3 at some future date.  I don't plan on getting a PS4, and if I did it wouldn't be for a few years anyway.  As a new PS3 owner, I really have no reason to want to move on.

Honestly, I want to wait and see. Sony said that they might allow us to transfer our PSN downloads to the PS4 to play through Gaikai. I wish they can let us play our discs through Gaikai or something, I am keeping my PS3 so I don't need to hear "keep your PS3". I heard this countless times. The real issue is that consoles break. There is the whole issue with the YOLD. I am on my second PS3 and I don't want to have to buy another one years later just to play my PS3 games. Sony patented an add-on that can enable backwards compatibility. I wish they can just release that.

blueboxdoctor

Very good point.  I ended up getting an extra PS2 as the first one I have started acting up some.  I'll probably do the same with the PS3 once there's a big sale as stores try to get rid of them (probably sometime in 2014), as it seems to be louder than it used to be, at least when watching a DVD/Blu-Ray, games don't seem to make it act any differently.

I have been thinking if I should buy a new PS3 later on or not as a spare. The thing is, I don't like the super slim. lol It's too cheap. I don't like the disc cover. A lot of people like to say "keep your PS3" but I honestly would have preferred 1 device rather than having to use 2. I wouldn't mind paying extra for backwards compatibility.

Not a chance. How long till the PS4 has a library the size of the PS3? I haven't played 10% of titles available today. There is going to be plenty of price drops left, right and center. My library(38) should double in a very short time. TLoU and GTAV alone should take up several months of my time. Then there's Riptide, Beyond:TS and Deadpool. PS4 in Q4 of 2015.

In other words, you are going to become an old school gamer then. Every system besides handhelds has been disc based since N64. If there is very little you would play out of the 55+ game list I made up, then why are complaining about BC. You do not like any of the games, I listed, so why did you make this thread. I listed most of the games you can find on PS3. If you are not interested in those, then you have no business saying hardly anything at. Go buy one of the other consoles, Since those are also disc based as well as the newer systems, how about doing everyone a favor and quit gaming as a whole? All you are about is complaining about everything, so nothing anyone says is going to satisfy you at all. If you already made up your mind, why are you wasting on the Internet talking to people who still enjoy games? Go ahead, get rid the PS3, but this system has the majority of the games coming out on the market right now except for other console maker's first party games. If you do not like the PS3, you will not find a whole lot of different titles elsewhere except maybe PC. Then again, PC is also disk based as well as digital.

I very well may quit gaming all together. I have rented or played many of the games on the list, and many of them I just could not get into. I do like the Uncharted games, Twisted Metal, and some of the sports games, but I already own all of those. Not really interested in God of War, DMC, Final Fantasy, Infamous, or most of those others mentioned. Not a big fan of Japanese games at all (except some Mario or the old Final Fantasy games). I never really cared for Metal Gear even. I did enjoy Sly Cooper, but I already have that one as well.

Sorry if I have angered anyone. I thought I would not be in the minority with my opinion on the B/C.

gamenerd15

I was not trying to be an A-hole.  It is just that everybody seems to complain about the world of games more than ever before.  The whole BC issues has been brought up again and again ever since Sony announced the 40 GB model back in November of 2007.  People complain about the lack of X genre on the platform and so on.  Then you come in and say that you are going to sell your PS3 and games because PS4 does not have backwards compatibility.  Then you claim that most games you have played are not worth full price and software on disc does not hold as well as cartridge.  After I point multiple games in several different categories, you claim not to be interested in 95% of them.  If you are not into any of the software that PS3 offers, then why are you complaining about the lack of BC for PS4?  Why did you even bother getting the system last year?  Do you see how what you have said contradicts itself in some way?  Why cannot people just enjoy the games that are out and stop complaining about ever minor thing that does not go their way?  I have a huge backlog, and I wish I could play as many games as people have time to complain about.  Sorry for the attitude.   It just does not sound like you are into gaming anymore.  If this is true, then sell your things and find a new hobby.

[/QUOTE No offense taken. You make some very good points. I purchased the ps3 for uncharted and better looking sports games... And lbp for my son. Now I really didn't care for either lbp nor lbp karting and my son is tired of them and has moved back to the wii. The sports games look better, but seem to have framerate issues. I still like uncharted and play battlefield bc2. However, I cannot find anything appropriate for my kids (other than the lego games we already have on wii) and not much else that interests me either. I was hoping to carry over the few games I like to ps4 and maybe rebut the lego ones for better control/graphics than our wii versions.

Digital data is not different from on disc data (in reference to those PSN posts).

Those games are still written to be compatible with PS3 hardware and its OS.

Basically the PS4 would have to be powerful enough to either emulate a PS3 or hardware would be included that would allow BC which brings us back to the original problem of not having it in the first place. Cutting costs and making an affordable but powerful system.

I don't think I'll be too bothered about the lack of PS3 compatibility when I eventually get my PS4 because I'll be busy playing PS4 games then. Of course I'll keep playing on my PS3 until then. But I think the PS4 games will be the ones I want to play and by the time I'll feel nostalgic twinges for some PS3 games they hopefully have got their 'everything, everywhere' streaming system set up.

Why do people have this attitude that as soon as the PS4 comes out they have to stop playing on their PS3? Just hold onto your PS3, it's not like you need to throw it away.

Vari3ty

Exactly! Plus I think 2013 has the potential to be one of the strongest in terms of exclusives (and games in general). Stop buying? I'm going to break the bank this year.

Yeah, there's quite a few games in the pipeline that could be decent. I don't know if it'll be the best year overall for the system, but I think there will be some hits.

It sounds like you spent money without thinking things through.  If sports games and the Uncharted series are the only reasons you bought a PS3, then you cannot really blame Sony for your decision.  You are the one saying that you are not a fan of most of the games the company offers, yet you complain about not being able to bring the few games over to PS4.  I just do not see your complaint about the lack of BC for the few games you did enjoy on the PS3.  All I can say is that I am sorry you are displeased with the PS3's offerings, but like I said before, you are not going to find much elsewhere.  90% of what Microsoft offers is also on PS3, and the Wii is practically dead besides Pandora's Tower and Disney Infinity.  As for the lack of family oriented titles, I would say that statement is false.

There are games such as

Ratchet and Clank

Hot Shots Golf

Puppeteer

Rayman Origins

Burnout

Wipeout

Modnation Racers

Shatter

Magic Orbz

Journey

Flower

The Unfinished Swan

Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom

Sonic Generations

3D Dot Game Heroes

Your kind of making things hard by throwing out entire genres like hack n slash games and shooters.  Stating that you hate Japanese games throws out fighting games JRPG's and SRPG's.  Westerm RPG's have either hack n slash or shooting types of gameplay, so those games are out as well.  I honestly do not know what to tell you.  You do not seem to be into games anymore, so just get rid of your systems and find a new hobby.

I just recently purchased my PS3 (holiday bundle for $200=great deal) and I quickly picked up several games and a couple of extra controllers on the cheap. I am now regretting my purchase due to not being able to play PS3 games on PS4. I know everyone will be all over the, "just keep your ps3...blah, blah, blah, but I have no space for another game system. I have O.C.D really bad (medically diagnosed) and I cannot handle multiple game systems and especially cords everywhere. I was planning to buy The Last of Us, Battlefield 3 or 4, and several other games, but have now cancelled all of my preorders and will not be buying any more games for it. I was even considering some movies on PSN, but apparently those will not work on PS4 either. I do understand they needed to drop the B/C due to the X86 architecture of the new system, but it sucks for many of us with game collections.

Since PSN will not be a part of PS4, how long until they pull the plug on it alltogether? How long will the Last of US online last? $60 for a 12 hour game and a few months of online is not worth it IMHO. Once PSN goes, there goes my Bad Company, Netflix, and most every other game I have (since there is no split screen on most games). Seriously considering selling the whole lot and being done with it. Extremely frustrated.

Here's some advice: Don't wait seven years and the announcement of the next console before buying the old one.

I really don't play old games THAT often anyway. I'll get at least Injustice in a couple weeks and Last of Us when it comes out, and probably be done with them by the time I get a PS4 (not necessarily at its launch). It doesn't actually matter if it has backwards compatibility because I don't have one now, thus I will be playing good PS3 games until I get one, and once I do, I'll be playing PS4 games.

Last Of Us and Beyond Two Souls on Day One. Hitman Absolution when I get for about $15 dollars which should be in the next couple of months. Also Lightning Returns, but I would rather that be a PS4 game.

In 7 years my mind has changed totally considering the next console. I was hyped at BC. But I used it for maybe 5 games for only a few months. I was certain that having 2 consoles near my TV would be a horrible thing, but really I'll have only to unplug the HDMI to plug it into the other once in a while, so honestly it won't be a big deal and even more as maybe in late 2014 the PS3 games will be far and few.

They said something in the PS4 meeting about the PS4 not being backwards compatible [directly], but being able to play older gen games via cloud. Im still not totally sure what that means since thats all they said but im guessing something like how you can buy ps1 and ps2 games on the playstation store. But of course that would still require purchasing them again.

Nope. I actually bought a game yesterday. And I'll definitely be picking up Last of Us. I'll prob keep supporting my PS3 for a year or two with purchases before I transition and get a PS4. Gives them time to iron out any issues, drop price, and increase features.

You can't have everything in life. Considering that you just bought a PS3, why not enjoy all the games you missed out over all these years rather than worrying about the next big thing? PS4 isn't going to disappear a year from now, or 2 years from now, or 10 years from now. In fact the longer you wait the cheaper it will get so once you're done with your PS3, put it aside or sell it.

No. Backwards Compatibility doesn't bother me. When I get a PS4 its unlikely I'll go back to PS3 games, and even if I did, it'd be simple just to unplug my PS4 and replug in the PS3.

Eh, having a PS3 that lacks backwards compatibility didn't stop me from buying PS2 games. Seems absurd to stop buying PS3 games, especially if there are so many quality titles I still haven't played. I had no plans of getting rid of my PS3 even if PS4 had backwards compatibility.

Nope. Hell, I had a PS3 that was "backwards compatible" and yet I rarely ever played any of my PS1/PS2 games on it. Especially after my PS3 game collection started growing.

LOL@tc. You just bought a system and now won't buy any new games because the PS4 is coming out? Your going to miss out on a heap of great games like The Last of Us and GTA.. but your loss.

You've got a load of games to keep you going till Ps4, just pick up beyond 2 souls, the last of us, and tomb raider, that should keep you going and then get rid and get a ps4 and a few games this will hold you out until the game clouding company gets there act together and starts releasing all the ps3 games from there end and there you go. me personally have my ps3 sat idle up stays not even plugged in because i can't deal with the rubbish graphics compared to what the pc can do and what the ps4 looks set to do, the only things i'm getting my ps3 out for is them games i've mentioned and thats it. O.C.D SORTED

I guess it's your loss, but why would you consider buying a PS4 so soon if you just finally jumped into this generation? Play the hundred games you missed out on, then 4-5 years into the PS4's life pick it up.

Even so, maybe I don't get OCD, but why would having 2 consoles sitting in a TV stand underneath your TV bother you? Or do you just set it on the floor and run the wires everywhere.

Step 1:

Get a nice TV stand with lots of room on the shelves for air.

Step 2:

Place multiple consoles and machines you have on the shelves and use the holes in the back to sort the cables to they can go behind the stand and into the back of the TV.

Step 3:

Now you have multiple consoles in a nice clean and orderly fashion.

Step 4:

Problem solved, play PS3 and PS4 games.

Dunno how multiple consoles in general is bad, I have a Wii-U, PS3 and 360 sitting under my TV, then on another stand off to the side I have my surround sound reciever a PS2, Gamecube and a Cable box on it. I will add the PS4 right along side them and use up my last HDMI port on the reciever. If I get a 720 is will probobly just replace the 360, as their aren't any games coming out in the future and I don't have much of a backlog on it.

Behind my TV there is many wires, but overall when walking into the room you can't see them because well, they are hidden by the stands.

I am proud of my collection :)

Not at all. I plan to keep my PS3 so either way it would not effect me from playing future PS3 games. I plan on getting Deadly Premonition and Beyond this year. white_sox
Double down on THIS, lol. I'm not getting rid of my PS3 so I see no need to 'stop buying' games for it. After all you gotta play something until the PS4 comes out, right......*shrugs*

How soon until they take PSN down alltogether though? I assume their new service will be like XBOX live and will charge a fee to play. I don't see them keeping the PSN service up for more than 12 months tops. Unlike PC, all of your online games will become single player games overnight!! I guess there may be a few with dedicated servers, but I am not sure if you would still need PSN to log in. The way I understand it, you have to go through PSN to even use netflix, untlike my Wii. And what happens to all of those who purchased movies through PSN?

I hope you don't think I am SONY bashing, because I believe they will win this next generation, and win big. I think they made mistakes with the PS3 and have learned from those mistakes.

What are you talking about 'take PSN down altogether'?? Sony has invested far too much into the PSN ecosystem that they aren't going to be taking that down any time soon. If nothing else, it will simply just EVOLVE not disappear; for all things PSN related from the 'PS3 era' I'm sure that where Gaikai will probably come in. Anywayz, it doesn't do much good to speculate such things like that so heavily at least until when E3 comes around in a couple of months (wow....can't believe how QUICK it's rolling up on us, lol). I'm sure Sony will flesh out more of those details by then (and in subsequent months to follow).

Certainly not me. In fact, I bought a PS3 partially so I could play PS2 games! (Yes, it's a CECHA.) There are just too many games out there that I haven't played that I could now play on it, even excluding the multiplatform ones I'd rather play on PC anyway.
