Better than the PS2 which had the worst pre-order/launch fail in the history of mankind. Sony is however simply taking much longer than MS to hit the ground running and we are pretty much still waiting for momentum to pick up. For a console bearing the Sony brand it's certainly dissapointing that it isn't way and above the clear lead console platform. Though I think that is a combination of MS doing a few things right and Sony doing a few wrong.
Sony decided to start this generation using the PS3 as a launchpad for their business as a whole. It paid of in that HD-DVD is no more but for gamers it has stunted the PS3, not so much in numbers but in terms of earnest support.
I mean, the PS3 had an EPIC fail launch, and is now starting to be called a decent gaming console, I love MGS4 and am probably the biggest MGS fan, but PS3 just doesn't deliver, SONY has not delivered on one promise, and this is the second year into it's life span.... maybe LBP or Killzone 2 will brighten things up?
Wheres Heavy rain? God of War? are these 09 titles? Sony lost so many exclusives this War is it's laughable.

Dont hate... id like to see your make a better one....AND PS3 is the best console that has ever been made
Only thing I think is silly is that the 40GB isn't backwards compatible.
If I want a 60GB PS3 that is backwards compatible then I have to hand out enough money that when I making that into Dollars it'll cost me 700$
Even more for a 80GB.
Guess I'll just keep my PS2 then.
I agree with the OP - Sony has and continues to sell the console based on promises (some of them in the past, false ones) stygiansanity
All consoles are sold on the promise of future releases.
and due to the fact that the mojority of consumers have bought the PS3 because of the name PlayStation, not because it's actually superior this generation.stygiansanity
You mean just like how the majority of consumers bought a 360 because it was the only next-gen console available at the time and has amazing hardware reliability?

Yes they have ran, and ran very far ..
I'm not disappointed in any way .. sorry to hear you are ..
LOL if you really believe that then it doesn't take much to satisfy you. Anyways, to the TC I agree completely with you, the PS3 hasn't showed anything worthy yet other than MGS4. You need more than one excellent game a year to show why your console stands out from the rest. We still wont see any stellar games quite yet just because it's a pain to develop for the PS3. In my mind PS3 is gonna be 3rd for quite some time if Sony doesn't push more content out that shows why a PS3 purchase is/was a good one.NONE of the consoles this gen have fully delivered
PS3: had a super slow start (though gradually getting better)
WII: has no games other then party/casual rubbish
360: Awful hardware (though slowly improving) most games have superior PC ports
PC and PS3 is all I need, looking forward to GoW3 and GT5
While I would agree that the term "epic failure" is uncalled for, I think Sony has dropped the ball a little this gen.
Given the lack of decent exclusives, I think Sony was focused on getting Blu-ray into has many homes as possible, initially. I don't fault them for this, given the stakes (their movie business), but I really think their games suffered. At this point, they really don't have the number of AAA titles that MS and Nintendo do for the 360 and Wii respectively.
It has if they took for granted that they had a built in user base of PS2 owners, who would readily make the switch to the PS3. Given the fact that PS2 games were outselling some of the PS3 games in the beginning, I would say they overestimated the loyalty of PS2 owners looking for some great games to play on the PS3, but not finding many.
Things seem to be turning around for Sony. MGS4 has gotten rave reviews that have actually translated into an increase in sales of the PS3 (I contributed my share :) ). The next year will be crucial for Sony. Little Big Planet needs to deliver, as does GT5, Socom (although being MP only, I have doubts). The dangers is that by the time the AAA titles start coming out, MS is going to be talking about its next gen system.
People like this get on my nerves......
You are saying that sony has done SOO bad and delivered SOO little that it pisses you off?
What about Uncharted? Mgs4? Firmware 2.41 and.42? Warhawk? Resistence?
What about the upcoming games that will redefinine console gaming? Lbp? Killzone 2? Resistence 2? Bioshock (with trophies)? The new warhawk update? Rock Band 2? Call of Duty World at War? Fallout 3?
I dont understand.....it doesnt HAVE to be an exclusive to be GREAT!! What about CoD4? Elder Scrolls 4?
You obviously either havent bought any of the good games, or are just one of those people that are pissed all the time. Us gamers make one hell of a hard crowd for sony, and they handle it ALOT better than others. Did you see E3? THEY LEFT THE OTHER COMPANIES IN THE **** DUST! Especially Nintendo......
I really only think they did one thing wrong that played a huge roll in this gen so far. I think they started with a price that was just plan stupid. I think if it would have launched for $400 (for the best model), we would be seeing things a lot differently than what they are now.I mean, the PS3 had an EPIC fail launch, and is now starting to be called a decent gaming console, I love MGS4 and am probably the biggest MGS fan, but PS3 just doesn't deliver, SONY has not delivered on one promise, and this is the second year into it's life span.... maybe LBP or Killzone 2 will brighten things up?

EDIT: Making the Blu-Ray drive speed that's in the PS3 so slow didn't help things either.
it was rough for sony in the begining cause everyone didnt believe that sony can actually make it as a next gen console with their dream of Blu ray embeded into the hardware. The wii is a whole different console so the war is jus between the 360 n the ps3. Now Blu ray has won, and if Microsoft still wants to play war they're going to have to buy bluray drives from sony. SO sony is going to get paid for xbox360s sold and PS3s. In my opinion Sony's already won. They own the gaming industrytsouljah
I don't think MS is going to lose much sleep over the fact that they might have to license Blu-ray, given that Sony computers use Windows.
Do you think this is good or bad for gaming... I mean really it did not take M$ to long to make and put into market the 360 and like most people and game makers say it is already reaching its peak...Things seem to be turning around for Sony. MGS4 has gotten rave reviews that have actually translated into an increase in sales of the PS3 (I contributed my share :) ). The next year will be crucial for Sony. Sony says they plan on lasting 10 years and I can't image any M$ product trying to last that long...In two years max we will hear them talk about their new console and you will see people buy it too because they will stop focusing on the 360 and put all their effort into the 720 just like how they did the original xbox
This is just how they do windows and everything else they make... THEY MAKE U UPGRADE!!!!!!!
Its like you either get the lastest upgrade or you get something else cause your previous product becomes obsolete...
I for one am not willin to keep on throwing money to them the first xbox was my mistake... fool me once shame on M$, fool me again someone gotta die

Yes, MGS4 is excellent, but the others, Warhawk and Resistance are fun, but average. Still, that is not many, compared to their competitors
While I believe the TC over stated his case by using the term "epic failure", claiming that games that have not been released "will redefine console gaming" makes you guilty of the same hyperbole.
Yes, if you bought a PS3, you have gotten some great games that were multi-platform. But for any console, its about exclusives. PS3 owners want the AAA exclusive games that justify picking the PS3 over the competition. And not just a few games, but a whole list of stellar exclusives. At this point in time, Sony hasn't delivered.
most games are multiplat now anyway. The last time I checked MS lost Eternal Sonata, Bioshock, Dead Rising and a couple others. MS pays 3rd parties to develop for their system. True some of the games have been out on 360 for a year, but we are getting exclusive content for the PS3 versions. Bioshock seems to be actually worth the wait . Most games run equally on PS3 as 360. The exclusives on 360 have shrunk significantly as well. Their first party pretty does do anything. The only developers they have got are Rare and from what I understand, they are still ok but not as great as back in the Nintedo days.
Ywa Sony dropped the ball in the beginning, but they have most games the other guy has and they have new games on their network instead of just old arcade games. The only spot Sony needs to focus on is RPG's which a few are coming this year and next plus more advertising. You always see 360 on all the time.
Yes there are some whiners who still complain about the poor PSN which isn't that poor anymore. 32 players are now becoming a standard minimum in PS3 games. Examples of this are Warhawk, Socom, and Killzone 2. Resistance ups that to 60 players. I would rather focus on actual gaming online then things that have nothing to do with games like 1 to 1 voice chat. You don't need to hold a conversation with someone if you are playing a single player game. No one is going to sit there on a mic and talk to you about their kids and divorce when your in the middle of banjo kazooie.
The achievement system is rather lame. Wow I get statements saying GOOD JOB PAL, YOU BEAT THE FIRST LEVEL OF X GAME and so forth. Yes there are some creative ones in the games but 80% of it is just beat level 4 or beat the game on a certain difficulty level. Things you should be do in a game anyway should not be rewarded. An achievement is going beyond expectations.
Most of the major games on PS3 are now getting trophies so all the achieving lovers that don't deserve it can wipe the tears from your eyes. Ok let me ask the 360 lovers this? What game on 360 really is innovative and really brings that new experience for you?
Yes Sony might take a while, but they are trying to go above and beyond just standard next generation stuff. Yes PS3 graphics have a bit of an edge over 360. Motorstorm 2, Killzone 2, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank and Little Big Planet all have better graphics than a lot of games on the other system. GT5 looks very impressive. But yeah they generally are the same.

The upgrade claim could be made about the PS3 as well. The only major change in hardware this gen, save HD, was the Wii.
In fact, if you wanted to, you could make the claim that Sony takes a loss on the PS3 so it can push Blu-ray, then it tells you to fully enjoy Blu-ray, you need a new "Full HD" 1080p Sony LCD. And, you can't enjoy Dolby Digital True HD without a new Sony receiver.
I am sorry, if you believe that Sony is going to try to stretch the PS3 lifecycle to 2016, I have some ocean view property in Indiana that I will sell you on the cheap.

Well, a lifecycle until 2016 might be possible. But, maybe by 2011, we will have a PS4 and 2015, a PS5 -- that's pretty much what they're doing now since PS1 and PS2 can both be bought and the PS2, at least, is still having games developed for it.
But agreed about the Wii. The other systems was all about upgrading CPUs just as you would move from a Pentium 4 to Core 2 Duo. The innovation this gen came from Wii and though I don't have an interest in getting one, hats off to Nintendo for raising the bar on innovation...
sony took a different approach. but i think in time they heal themselves in sence of games. Sony focused ALOT on media this gen(and i dont mind). Now there pumping out games, Infamous, R2, new ratchet and clank, LBP, socom, Killzone 2, were getting bioshock, Sony exclusive FFv13 and the complete collection. So i dont think we have a lack of games, devs are getting used to the engine and Naughty dog and sony just shipped out new dev kits and are personally teaching 3rd parties how to use them efficiently, the new dev kits are much easyer to use and uses more of the ps3 power (thanks Naugty dog and thanks for making uncharted a great exclusive). And supposingly theres a new Jak in the works.
We had a decent amount of exclusives in the past: Uncharted, ratchet and clank, mgs4, R1, untold ledgends(i love those games), lair(was more a revolutionary step using remote play features, thats whats cool about it), SSHD,
and have you forgot about multiplats?? and theres a ton of great exclusive psn games coming out, with some of xbla games coming over to playstation.... I dont think is doing to shabby. THere doing great, give them time, hey had a bad start, but they can catch up.

....what I would have typed, but I like just about everything he said; which I couldn't have said better.
:::EDIT::: The thing I like about Sony is the fact there innovative in terms of PsP and Ps3. There always, (yes I know there slow most of the time) trying to make things better and even bigger. The first year was slow, I'll give you that, but the overall quality and preparation they put into there work is awesome. PsP in using UMD's (games / movies) and the Blu-Ray which helps developers get the most out of games, ala Bioshock and overs that are coming too the Ps3 game list.
Im really liking what im seeing from Sony and Co. this up coming Fall and even next year; which seems to be even more promising :D The ceiling is high for Sony. Most game developers are just now getting the big picture of just how much more they can do with the Ps3's software / hardware.
It's taken quite sometime, but things are starting to really look up, for me atleast ;) Im happy with Sony and there products and thats what pretty much counts anyways. Sorry for others that don't feel the same...

None except Forza motorsport 2 and Alone in the Dark (highly recommend you to try) but it multi plat and I'm getting tired of the same types of games (fps) or little to no story an innovations. Heck I still love socom 1, 2, and 3 as for as fun factor IMO it beat COD 4. Atleast you can vote a holes that team kill, add more attachment to guns, peek around corners without exposing your whole body, no lame perks, and swap between first and third person. But Cod 4 is good but not greater than socom IMO. I've been thinking about playing it recently.
Reports that the graphics on the PS3 and the 360 are "the same" have been wildly misleading. Multiplatforms will rarely look better on the PS3 because most of them are created on the 360 initially. And why wouldn't they be? It's much easier to create a game on the 360 that you know will work and port it straight to the PS3 than it is to, as Square is doing, create a game on the PS3 and worry about how you're possibly going to downscale it to work on the 360.
The PS3 has a better architecture and a better graphics card than the 360, in addition to additional storage (and faster data transfer rates) with Blu Ray. I won't go into the technical aspects because people are going to default to biased articles; I'll just challenge any of the skeptics to find a game on the 360 that looks better than Metal Gear Solid 4 or Uncharted.

Agree. Gta 4 suck because alot of stuff has been left out that was on SA. Mainly because MS disc lack space. MS is holding this gen back until many more companies develop for the PS3 the port to the others. MS will be force to make a new console again to compete.

Just because a game don't get a perfect ten don't mean it isn't great. Example Indigo Prophecy, socom series, and others. There is nothing with having both good and great games as long as there is great gameplay, stories, and replay value.
Why do most people blame the exclusives for failing the console?
If a console fails...it's because of the console itself, not just the exclusives. And there are a lot of good multiplats like Oblivion, GTA4, and CoD4.
IMO, exclusives does not have anything to do with console failure. It helps giving life to the console but just a little.
Do the math....once you pay for batteries and online play with the 360 you basically got yourself a ps3. Especially if you plan on playing online for more than a year (which most people will, and do). With my ps3 I can watch blu rays, surf the internet with its built in browser, and play great games online for free...just to name a few.
It also really grinds my gears when people act as if the 360 has SO many more games/exclusives. Besides halo and gears, the 360 really doesn't got a whole lot. And btw...when was the last time the 360 came out with a good exclusive? haha
I'm very happy with my ps3 and have absolutely no regrets in choosing this system. The ps3 has a very bright future and is already doing great.

skp_16
"Console failure" might be a little harsh, but consoles do need exclusives.
Great exclusives set your console apart from the competition and translate, hopefully, into more people wanting to buy your system (see: MGS4). The more people that buy the console, the more appealing it is for developers, knowing that they have a potential userbase of x number of gamers.
Further, the console with greater userbase is the one that is going to get the most attention from developers, with the console with the lower userbase getting the ports. In fact, given that the 360 still has the larger userbase, it is even more important for the PS3 to have some excellent exclusives going forth.
Therefore, I would disagree that exclusives help consoles only "a little".
