This only happens when I'm playing COD4, the PS3 fan starts to get really loud, even louder then the game.

It's pretty loud when you first boot it up, but quiets up later

Well, there were times where my PS3 had its fan on what I believe to be the highest speed. However, I only noticed it whenever I'm browsing the internet, or during loading times whenever I play COD4, all with my AC of. With my AC on, I can barely hear it at all.

As far as I'm aware, the ps3 monitors the temperature of the processor and ambient temperature inside the ps3 and as the temp increases so does the speed of the fan (much like a pc ) to keep the ps3 cool. Vacuum the air vents on the ps3 to free them of dust and make sure there's enough ventilation space around the ps3. I hope this helps.. :D

You need to make sure you have plenty of venting for the PS3. The fan should only speed up when the system is getting hot. Under normal conditions, this is not an issue with the PS3 due to it's great hardware design.

I run COD4 for hours with no fan noise.

The fan does that every time I play a game, but at least it's keeping my PS3 cool and dust free.

Well my PS3 does if i keep it in my den which is the hottest room in my house because only one A/C vent for a room 2x the size of the next biggest room. Other than that its pretty quiet.

Mine doesn't do that, maybe you should call sony and maybe ask if there's a problem with your Playstation 3.

ok i know this is something of a touchy subject but here goes any way. A friends ps3 started doing this. it started getting so bad that any game would cuase the ps3 to sound LOUD i mean near hair dryer levels of sound. about 5 minuts after stsrting games ect. it was well vented in a cool room. on a hunch i tryed doing the fan speed test. "self cleaning feature" google it or search on youtube for how to. that completly solved the problem. it had nothing to do with the system getting to hot or dust. some kind of softwear glitch i would think. this is easy to do on the 40gig sku but posable on the others. Now this may not correct your problem. it may be the thermal compound under the heat synks may have dryed out or was not properly seated.

Sounds like a Xbox 360 problem to me, though the 360 one as we all know it is pretty loud, pending on which version you had.

I'm generally assuming that it does not make noise but from what I hear, it makes alittle noice when playing a intensive game or when having not much ventilation which bulks up the PS3 and causes heat.

Actually the fans are what pull in dust. That's why you should clean the vents on a regular basis.

Well at least now its a fan noise not the random clicking noise of the disk reader( like in the PS1 and PS2).

Nope. Mine is very quiet. I can barely hear it unless I stand like a feet away from it.
