I thought I read it could be done but I don't know what I'm doing wrong.  I connected a 200 gb external drive to my PS3 via the USB cable and I didn't get it to work.  What am I doing wrong?

Do you happen to know what the format of the HDD is? Because PS3 can only support FAT or FAT32. I ran into this problem.

any hard drive will come ready to use on a PC and it's format is NTFS. you need tp format it to FAT32 by connecting it to a pc first, then it should work no problem. also make sure there's nothing you want on that disk before formatting.

I had the same problem with some external ones, then I got the recommendation from another site to use an iPod as a HD, and surprisingly, it works flawlessly!! Note that I am using the latest model iPod (video, etc), but I'm not saying older ones won't work, I just havent tried. Here are steps you should take:

1. Plug iPod into computer, and in iTunes check the option to "enable disk use", and make sure you hit 'apply' at the bottom. NOTE: now when you are ready to disconnect it from your computer you MUST first use the ejct function or "safely remove hardware" thing in windows.

 2. Open your iPod 'disk' in explorer and create a folder in there with any obvoius, one-word name like 'PS3' or 'VIDS'

3. go ahead and put all the stuff you want to move to your PS3 into that folder on the ipod (assuming you've converted your videos to an acceptable ps3 format using RedKawa or some other software; music I found works best if it is converted to MP3's specifically, i.e. no AAC or WAV or other formats, the ps3 sometimes won't read them well; photos of any type ought to work fine)

4. EJECT your ipod from the computer, then remove it.

5. Plug it into one of the PS3's USB ports. Go to the respective category in the XMB you want to import stuff into (photos, videos, music) and you should see at the top the ipod drive.

6. INSTEAD of just opening the ipod and the folder in which your stuff is, select the ipod, hit Triangle on your sixaxis, and you should see an option for 'view all' or something like that. If you just go into the ipod folder without doing this each time the files will not show up.

7. Go to the folder where your stuff is and start copying to the PS3.

8. When finished, for safety (i don't know that its really necessary), when you are done, turn off the PS3 completely before unplugging the ipod from it (better safe than sorry). Then feel free to re-plug into your computer, delete the stuff that you had in there and no longer need (check and see that it did indeed copy successfuly onto the ps3, of course), and repeat the process with any more stuff you want to move.

As I said, this has worked perfectly for me, i'm not saying its the easiest option but it works. Of course that assumes you have an ipod =)   Hope this helps!!

??? Not disagreeing but I thought Microsoft developed both file formats for windows. NTFS (under win NT) FAT-32 (under win 95)

But if he does get it to work, it's only good to play movies and music and such on, right? The PS3 won't be able to save game data or installations ont the external drive, right?

You should be able to use the external drive to back up PS3 files. There is a 'backup" option there. I'd really like to back up my Tiger Woods character as my son has taken a liking to playing it with my dude. He's deleted stuff by accident before. I also have 1000's of pictures on an external drive that I'd like to view on my PS3...and some home porno's. HAHAHA

I have a 750gig external hdd plugged up to my PS3. It wasnt FAT or FAT32 when i got it but my m8 converted it somehow using some program i think. It only took him a few minutes to do. Then i created a 'VIDEO' file and put all my movies into that and it works a treat.
