I think that trophies add something something that isnt there in the game. Its basically a hook to try to make you play the game more, or even try to get you to buy games to get more of them and go up in rank. I personally think that that was M$' idea. They took a showing of skill and time spent in a game like in the earlier Ratchet and clanks if I remember, and exploited it to make as much money as they can though I don't think the whole idea effects gamers that much, its still there. Basically, trophies have begun to act like the purpose to play a game again for the lack in game play or length or whatever. Ex. COD MW2, not about its trophies in the story but the online. The game is basically a you see another person first, you kill them, they see you they kill you and that's how it is. I believe that offers maybe about 10 hours of fun, maybe a little less. Add the whole XP and titles as well as the addition of more powerful weapons as you spend more time on the game and you will be playing it a lot longer but the game is basic and offers little depth, only an illusion by the expensive in game title and ranks and levels making it the ultimate time waster. Something more in depth is Team Fortress 2, or MGS series. Trophies have been implemented in different ways to try to make games more fun like in GTA IV. That GTA is the only GTA I have spent less than 40 hours on. Its like they took all the advancements in the series and replaces them with inefficient physics and mediocre graphics and with the addiction of trophies, there is no help in making the game better. I dont prefer them for these examples but they do add some sense of achievement for players that have put alot of time into games.
I play games to have fun. I also get trophies to have fun. Playing a game with trophies isn't necessarily more fun than playing a game without trophies, but it adds more replay value and I find it to be more rewarding. Not that non-trophy games are unrewarding, but you know what I mean.
