I am unbelievably pissed off at my ps3 online connection. Half the time it works, half the time I get booted. I'l lbe playing COD4 online for 3 or 4 hours fine then all of a sudden bam disconnected. Reset the game, bam disconnected. Its **** unreal. I have a wired connection and my internets fine. I have no problems doing anything online on my computer, only my ps3. Ive done my reserach and I realize if I want a better connection I should change my NAT type from type 3 to type 1 or 2. Ive also read the step by step directions how to do this a million times here.. http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=74303. This still does not help. For 1) I have no idea how to assign my ps3 a static IP address. And for 2), I have no idea how to open up ports. Someone please give me advice how to fix this ridiculous internet connection so I can play online without randomly getting disconnected every god damn day. Thanks.

While you wait for an expert to chip in - shut off the media bar on the XMB and reset your modem by unplugging it for at least 10sec before hooking it up to your PS3. Also, with your pc, check for online updates to your modem.

Oh - and make sure the ethernet connection on the back of the PS3 is "centered". The ethernet plug in the PS3 tends to be a bit on the big side which makes the cable sit lose. Drove me nuts till I found it by wiggling the cable around. Now I just make sure it's straight in and 1/2 way between all the way in and all the way out (lose play after you "click" it in) - works fine.

Thanks for the advice man, but I am almost certain what needs to be done is changing my NAT type. As I mentioned before I cannot find one person or tutotial that has yet been able to help me change it. Someone please help!! I refuse to play online again until my NAT type is changed.

i may be wrong but i thought nat type just did something for the mic. BUT ..... i'm also hard wired and sometimes have the same problem. for 1 how many things run off your router. i've got two laptops and a pc on mine and beleive it or not i have to turn at least 1 laptop and maybe the pc or i get an amazing amount of lag. also it seems that bluetooth devices seem to slow my gameplay connection. i can't give you actual advice but thats what i do.

When my PS3 entered NAT3, I couldn't join any games on Warhawk.

However, DMZ is taking your PS3's IP address and opening all the ports needed so you don't hafta forward anyports.

It also depends on your router, normally, you'd hafta enter your router's IP address in the URL bar to get to your router's settings. Locate anything with the name DMZ. On your PS3 go to settings > network settings > internet connection list > and it should say IP address.

Enter that into your router.

Everyone will have their own little quirk on how they got NAT type to work. Mines still at NAT 3 but trying to also fix it, everything on the internet hasn't helped me, but I found out how to get a Static IP on my PS3 and through your router. Which will hopfully help me, which can hopfully help you man.

Call your ISP (Internet Service Provider). Tell them you want to set up a Static IP address so you can run your PS3, they will set one up with a IP address, DNS Server, Gateway and all those fun things. You must then do a manual Internet Set-up on your PS3, it isn't hard.

But first call your ISP to get the static ip address, I'm doing this tonight when I get home from work, to hopfully solve my problem, since nothing yet has worked.

You can PM man and I will send you to some links to help.

Hey man don't get discouraged .. I've been trying to fix mine for like 2 weeks, I think I almost have it. You'll get it eventually.

Also when you call your ISP ask them if they have a firewall up, because if they do than that can be a problem, maybe get them to take it down, as long as all your routers and modems are password safe.

What kind of router do you have?

TC - while I understand your frustration this has nothing to do with your PS3, this has to do with your networking skills, and also your router. So first off what router do you have? Once you tell us the router type, we will be able to help you with setting up a DMZ, and dumping your PS3 in it. Other info you will require is, your routers IP address, and the DNS settings from your ISP. Once you have this information and supply it here we can help you.

None of this has anything to do with your ISP. Setting up and paying an ISP for a static IP means you want a static IP on the internet, this is used for setting up servers. Setting up a static IP on your PS3 has nothing to do with your ISP. Your ISP also will not be in control of your local firewall, this is something your router does for you. TC - Please don't call your ISP and ask this, you'll look like a complete idiot.

Ok, for starters my router does not even have a name on it (The only words on the entire box is "power" "ethernet" "line 1" "line 2", etc) It came through my ISP which is Road Runner (through Time Warner Cable). The modems brand is TouchStone, the router doesnt have a name on it, just a black box.

My routers IP address is 192.168.0.9

As far as my DNS settings, I've called my ISP multiple times this week to try and fix this ridiculous problem and they are of ZERO help. I usually get some dumb foreign broad that can barely speak english, let alone give me any useful information. Therefore I could not get my "DNS settings" out of her. I just get frustrated and tell her shes worthless and hang up.

If there is any other information you need to help me out please let me know, I will be glad to give you any information I can for someone to help me change my NAT Type ASAP. Thanks in advance for anyone taking the time to try and help me out. I get frustrated very easily and bottom line is I just want to play my PS3 online without getting randomly disconnected all the time, thats all.

If you're using a router, make sure your router has the latest firmware update (provided by the company itself). Once you download it, you have to type in your own IP address in your browser, and upload the software and then it'll restart the modem/router. I had this issue cause my firmware was like 4 years old and now it has awesome connection.

Go to your Start Menu click run then type CMD hit enter, then when the prompt comes up type in ipconfig/all then hit enter. All router info should be in there.

And in Internet Explorer type in 192.168.0.1 see if that works or 192.168.1.1

Connection specific DNS Suffix: twcny.rr.com

IP Address: 192.168.0.11

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.248

Default Gateway: 192.168.0.9

I've tried typing in the Default Gateway IP address into my browser to try and mess around with my router settings, but it doesnt work. "Internet Explorer cannot display webpage" If any other information is needed let me know. Sooner or later Im hoping someone can post me a simple step by step tutorial on how to change my NAT Type....

Not sure if this will help your situation, but I had the same problem and solved it by plugging my ethernet cable directly into my modem. If you are able to when you play certain games, plugging right into the modem will give you the best possible online connection you can get. When I do that, I never have any issues with my connection. I am not able to do that all the time, like when my girlfriend is using her computer, but most the time I am playing, only my console is on so it works fine.

TC - since you can't provide any information all I can do is tell you how this stuff works, and hopefully you can set it up yourself. A DMZ is a dedicated IP address that your router opens up to the internet. What this means is, once configured correctly there is no need to open any ports, because as far as your PS3 is concerned it is connected directly to the internet. If your routers IP address is 192.168.0.9 (which sounds weird, run IPCONFIG /ALL as described above and check this) then you can set your DMZs address as 192.168.0.254, if it's anything else just make the DMZ X.X.X.254. Once a DMZ is enabled on your router you need to configure it on your PS3. To do this you need to do manual network setup. So go to the networking setup part and select manual set up. The information you require is your routers IP address (this goes in the gateway field), and the DNS address(es) from your ISP (you should be able to get this from their webpage), and your subnet mask (ipconfig /all will tell you this). So you go through the manual setup, setting either wireless or wired depending on your settings, your PS3s address will be X.X.X.254 (the IP of your DMZ), the gateway setting is your routers IP address, and the DNS settings are the IPs you get from your ISP, and your subnet mask is what you got above. Everything else can be left as defaults. Once you go through this and run the network test you will be NAT type 2. If you are not then the information you supplied isn't correct or your router is cheap and doesn't support proper networking tools like DMZ properly. Sorry I can't give you more exact information, but without knowing what router you have I can't be of much more help. This information though if you can decipher it will give you NAT type 2. edit: I notice you filled in some details above while I was posting this. The fact that you can't even log on to your router yet though is going to cause you massive issues. Once you've addressed that I hope it all goes well for you.

I give up. It's unbelievable how difficult it is to change your NAT Type, especially if your not a Networking Speacialist. I've reaserched ps3 forums and networking forums until I can't see straight, and I still cannot change this annoying NAT Type 3. I guess I will just suffer and not play any more games online, if this is really that difficult of a problem to fix. I have no more words to describe my frustration with the problem other than, unbelievable. Theres got to be some netwroking whiz out there that can send me a step by step networking-for-idiots guide to solve this problem.

TC there may be a problem with the router that your ISP is providing you. I have DSL here and am using my own router (a older D-Link G series) that works like a charm even with multiple systems running off the same network. I have some friends that are using cable ISP's and at certain times of the day they have a tough time with there service as well because so many people are using the same feed for there TV and internet service where for some reason with DSL may not be advertized to be as fast but it seems that it really is not only as fast but much more stable.

Note I have everything except my desktop running on a wireless network.

I've already told you everything you need to know. If you can't even log on to your router how can anything anyone tell you be of any use? Pick up your routers manual and start reading. Once you understand how your router works everything and you can finally log on to it everything else will make sense. Getting frustrated because you can't do something doesn't mean there is a problem with the PS3, or even your network. It just means that currently you don't understand how to do it. Finally just be aware that some ISPs supply crap routers. Maybe you should consider buying a better and more easy to use 1?

Basically, if you can get into your router's settings. You can enter your PS3's IP into DMZ settings. And that should solve the problem.

Well I finally figured out why I cant access my router options or give you barely any information on it. My ISP blocks all user access to the router settings. If I wanted to do any of this port forwarding business or DMZ crap I would have to go out and buy my own router set it up to my preferences. Finally getting somewhere. Looks like I am going to have to make a trip to Wal-Mart tonight and buy a Linksys router instead of using this P.O.S. my ISP provided me with.

i read through this entire thread as i am having the same problem AND my ISP is Time Warner Roadrunner. I just got off the phone with customer service not too long ago because i was tired of all this nat 3 type crap.i already knew that my router was restricted in port forwarding or accessing the dmz. but i figured customer service can configure all of that for the ps3 on their end.but no..i was told that not only can they not do anything to fix it on their end, -but also that buying a por tforward, dmz friendly router would not help because roadrunner itself still won't let you chage these settings.and i asked detailed questions and supplied the tech specialist with all the info that i knew.so i received answers that were stringent of my inquiries.or in other words, accurate and to the point. I'm considering doing a bit of research to see if perhaps he was wrong, because no matter how direct you ask; people can still misinform you. I'll even call again to verify if this is true. but so far, the word is that CHANGING TO A BETTER ROUTER IF YOUR ISP IS TIME WARNER ROADRUNNER WILL NOT HELP YOUR NAT ISSUES.

Its something else. I have type 3....its just effects how quickly you can join a game...its doesn't effect gameplay or how long ur connected. This is just my knowledge from my computer connection and the other 7 people I know with type 3 security :) ...I suggest trying to plug the PS3 in via ethernet to see if maybe its a fault in your router. Good Luck with your internet problem...again, I am not an internet genius but I do have some experience with technical stuff involving routers and such. Oh by the way, check to see if you are connected to your router and not anyone else's, because I've seen this problem of yours when people try connecting to a neighbor's router or something. Also make sure that you don't have multiple things hooked wirlessly to a router. I believe this problem may occur when too many wirless things (laptops, games, etc.) are connected to one router.

NAT type 3 means your router isn't forwarding the information correctly to the PS3s ports, and it definitely has a negative effect on game play.
