I'll be buying my first plasma in the next couple of weeks, but i've read on some sites that plasmas aren't good for gaming, because of image retention. i've also read that image retention isnt that much of a problem these days, but the tv will need to be "broken in" for about 100 hours or so first before you should do any heavy gaming. I'm definitely planning on hooking my PS3 to the tv, but i'm just tryin to get as much info on the subject before i make my purchase. I'd appreciate any input if you have any.

If you get a good brand, like panasonic or samsung, you should have no worrys about burn in. Just turn down the factory settings for contrast and brightness because they are set way too high out of the box. Image retention is just a ghost image left over on the screen for a few moments, it is not permanent and you probably will never notice it...but this is why you want to turn down the contrast and brighteness. Some people recommend breaking in the picture for about 100 hours, that is simply if you intend on having the set professionally calibrated in the future. I myself never bother with the break in proceedure and think it is a waste of time. I use my 56in Panasonic plasma right out of the box for games, movies, pc monitor, letterbox and standard 4:3 content and i have never had a problem. If you are paranoid, at the beginning just avoid leaving static images on the screen for several hours at a time, and use the zoom feature on the remote to fill the screen when you are watching a letterboxed movie or 4:3 tv show. But in reality, i dont think you need to do that at all.

If you don't want stuff to be permanently 'burned' into your screen, don't get a plasma TV. They're not the right choice if you'll mainly be gaming on it.

New plazma TVs have burn-in protection, its not a problem anymore. I use a plazma - 42" Panasonic Viera - and its great for gaming.

Oh yeah... it isn't.

My last TV was a plasma TV, and it was basically ruined from playing games.

I dont know much about that brand, but did you set the contrast and brightness to reasonable levels, did you leave the games paused for long periods of time, did you play the same game repeatedly for several hours a day for weeks at a time. Maybe that brand was a budget model? All i can say is that i have been gaming on my panasonic plasma's for 2 years and i dont have any burn in. The pictures on both sets are still amazing .

** i just tried looking up Mitsubishi plasma television on Amazon.com and they dont sell them. There are no current Mitsubishi plasma's being sold...apparently that brand crashed and burned. You unfortunatley bought a crap tv.

oh **** a car company makes tv's too. sweet.

Lcd moniters are cheaper and way better for gaming. Hell I have mine hooked up as a tv, computer moniter, and the ps3. (the 360 also before I sold it)

you'll need seperate speakers, but a good set of serio speakers (even better if surround sound) beat the hell out of tv speakers any day

Some videophiles like plasma, but as a general purpose TV, LCD is way better. Burn in is a big problem, especially since games have a HUD. LCD should last you longer, Besides plazmas are power hogs.

Obviously. I don't remember how much it cost, but it wasn't THAT cheap.

To answer the question, I played games on it most of the time, parts of the HUD from certain games were 'burned' in the screen. I have a good tv now so I don't have to worry about that anymore. ;)

thanks for all the input. i'm planning on getting a samsung pn50b850.. so hopefully it'll do a better job at burn-in protection than the cheaper brands like you guys have stated.

Speaking of HDTVs and Mitsubishi, I noticed that they have some really low priced big DLP 1080p TVs.

I just baught a $800 LG 47" LCD which I thought was cheap and was surprised to see that Mitsubishi had a 65" DLP 1080p TV on sale at frys for $800.

if you are going to be using it mostly for gaming, definitely go with an LCD. Don't buy a Plasma for gaming, there will be ghosting and pixel burn-in after about two hours of consecutive play. Plasmas are better for TV and Movies because of the high refresh rate, while LCD's are much better for gaming. They also don't get glare :D

___

Seriously, get an LCD for gaming dude, you will be sorry if you don't.

It's not that big a deal, I don't think you need to "break in" tv's anymore. It's also more of a problem if you do something for many many hours -- like, if you played Madden for 10 hrs straight, the scoreline at the bottom w/ the EA logo might be visible as a shadow on the screen afterwards. But even that goes away.

The new Plasmas are not only good for gaming, they're better than LCDs. They are a lot quicker and have less input lag.

It's not as if LCDs have input lag though, and even if it is, it's so miniscule that it would have no effect on anything.

It depends on the person. I easily notice input lag. Jumping from my 32" to my 42" Plasma was a major difference. A lot of LCDs (particularly the cheaper ones) have lots of input lag.

Thats because they are older Plazma TVs the new ones have burn in protection that has only been out for less than a year.

Ya i say when buying a tv always go for the best, because most likely your going to have the tv for a long time. I have a Samsung LCD 32" specifically bought for gaming. It is awesome I couldn't be happier. Havn't tried plasma for gaming, but which ever you go with, go with a good brand name like Samsung or Sony.

Plasmas are perfectly fine for gaming... they offer better color than LCDs, too, so you'll probably be happier with a plasma. Panasonic and Samsung both offer really good units with anti burn-in tech. Mitsubishi doesn't even make plasmas anymore, and when they did they weren't very good. They're not really a good example of plasmas for gaming. Just make sure to turn down the brightness/contrast and don't do anything stupid like leave a game on pause for an hour or two... That'll cause problems on any kind of tv, plasma or not.

I got my plasma t.v 6 months before the PS3 was released in 2006. I haven't had any problems with either. I have a 37" Panasonic plasma that my girl and I are always playing something or watching a blu-ray on it. We also have a Wii hooked to it, and my son brings his 360 and plays on it. We have never had an issue with it {other than who's time it is to play}.
