So I am going to return my 40GB that won't read discs and get the Slim tomorrow. Are there any severe problems that have been encountered yet like: YLOD, freezing, overheating, disc scratching etc.?

I heard very few stories about people who got their Slims YLoD and I can't guarantee that they weren't trolling. But I wouldn't worry about a thing :)

I haven't heard any problems with it. I personally have two. One in family room as blu-ray player and one in my room for gaming purposes.

Both are used on daily basics.Keep in mind that no hardware is 100% perfect but I heard nothing buy good things when it comes to PS3 Slim. ;)

Please people stop the ignorance of preading the term YLoD. That's not a defect like the Red Ring in the 360, it is just an indicator that an internal component is not working. It can be the lens, disc drive, power supply, gpu, cpu, memory, it can be anything.

LOL. What a troll.

How? I bought the 40GB on Gamestop refurbished and the disc drive broke after two days. How does that make me a troll? I just wanted to know what the chances of something like that happening to the Slim were. The reason why I wanted to get this information was because I am going out of my way tomorrow to get a replacement because since Friday my GameQ on Gamefly is filled with PS3 games, and they shipped Red Dead Redemption today and want to have a PS3 before the game gets here. Sure I have a 360, as you can probably tell from my sig, but I wanted a PS3 and got a 360 since it was cheaper when I purchased it. I needed to get a next gen system for GTA IV, and the 360 was the best option at the time. So... once again... tell me how I am troll?

I really don't understand why people seem to think all PS3's fail. I have a 60 gig that's been running 24/7 for about three years now with no problems with any of the hardware. There have been software glitches in some software that was easily cured or it was from the way the developer wrote the program in a game.

The reason why I think that is because I have had a 360 since 2007 and it's got the RROD twice on me in that time. Same as my brother. So it's happened 4 times in my family, and it's just something I feel is among all consoles even though it probably isn't. Also, since the PS3 I just had failed, that also adds to the whole reasoning behind. Maybe I'm just overreacting.

Got a 120gb last month, been using it daily ever since for a lot of things: beat 4 games, play mw2 online a LOT, wife plays a lot of DLC games (we recently dl'd Zombie Tycoon), streamed a couple Netflix movies. Only thing to report is it froze once while playing a used game, and that i'm sure was just the disc itself.

Mine has frozen up about 20 times, including about 5 times where it wouldn't even shut off pressing the power button. I had to unplug it. :| My 60GB I've had since launch has frozen up like 5 times, all while using the internet browser. And from threads I've seen on here before, I'm not the only one experiencing frequent freezing with the slim.

For the most part the Slims are the most reliable ones out currently. They do freeze though like all other PS3's.

DONT DO IT. Sony just came out with a ps3 slim that uses less energyand runs quieter. Wait a week or two for the new slims to fill up shelves

not exactly a problem, but it heats up very rapidly. but won't you wait for the release of CECH21XX model? the new GPU uses less power, hence less heating problems. it MAY be cheaper too.

The only problem that my Slim gets is that it makes cracking noises after being turned off, but that's just the plastic cooling down. Other than that, I have no problems with the Slim.

Even then it is barely noticeable. I have a Slim and it has been running flawlessly since I got it.

That's because the PS3 browser is cheap. It happens with every model, that's a software not hardware problem.

Those newer model may end being the ones with problems. Sony has been in a race to reduce the production cost of the PS3 and wile some of the parts like the CPU and GPU use less energy than the first ones they may have replace other components with cheaper ones. Not everything is a change in the way the produce the CPU and GPU or a price drop in them. According to them the newer ones will be more liter wich means that the exterior casing maybe is cheapear than the first batch.

That happens to my PS3 too and everything is okay, that's not a problem even my Bravia TV does it sometimes.

Its true that YLOD (front led flashes yellow) means (Critical Internal Problem) but the majority of the cases of the YLOD are exactly the same problem as the RLOD e.g. the motherboard has cooked itself to death. I recently had to replace my 60gig PS3 with a SLIM. At least Microsoft give you a replacement unit. The Slim is very quiet and is cooler.. But annoying it doesn't have memory card readers and PS2 compatibility but its not a show stopper.

No a stand won't do anything. I have one with the vertical stand and game still came out warm, that's normal.

Not that I know of. Occasionally games have frozen which has happened twice, but nothing major.
