I cant seem to get the audio quality from my PS3 that I get from my 360 (dolby digital 5.1). I dont think my surround amp is reading the dolby digital signal correctly from PS3. it is a huge sound difference, and there is no 'dolby digital 5.1' readout on the surround amp display...so I know there is something wrong.

can I hook up a fiber optic cable along w/ the HDMI cable and change the audio settings accordingly? or do I need to mess w/ the PS3 settings for HDMI audio output to acheive dolby digital 5.1 audio? maybe I have it set up wrong (I just got it a few days ago).

Does your Receiver support HDMI switching? If it does, HDMI is the way to go as the PS3 will output uncompressed audio.

If you only have support for TOS-Link/Optical, then that's the way to go. Use your HDMI into the HDTV and Optical into your receiver and set the PS3 acordingly.

If that is already your setup what you are noticing is the difference between the 360's audio chip and its built-in Dolby Digital encoding versus the PS3 which is outputting a 5.1 signal but not one that takes advantage of encoding features or the 360's library of positional audio features. Personally I didn't have any problems when I tested my PS3 through Optical, it sounded fine. But I only tested it for informational purposes, I use an HDMI-switching Receiver, particularly to take advantage of Blu-ray discs and 7.1 audio.

The only other thing I can recommend is checking your sound field on your Receiver. Try the different modes and see how much of an affect they have on the output.

I have a Sony STR-DG1000 7.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FNAENA/104-8140106-6943955

At the time it was Sony's upper-mid-range choice. It has a nice range of features but I guess I'm more used to the advanced sound-modes and THX support in Yamaha's of a similar price.

Have you set your PS3 audio settings to HDMI?  After going into HDMI > Audio > did you check all the boxes that your receiver can do?

thanks for the advice. right after I posted that, I unplugged the fiber cable from my 360, and put it in the PS3, now everythings good- much better quality- actual dolby digital 5.1.

I dont think my onkyo receiver supports HDMI, but having both the HDMI (for video only), and fiber optic (for audio) works fine, just have to switch it back when I get around to playing my 360 again.

You can buy a optical switcher so you no longer need to plug and unplug.
