http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=37773 I hope the European launch works out, I hate to see any of this article come fruition. pimperjonesPlease, Sony has too many AAA first party games to go into that death spiral. I would say that Sony could go into that spiral, but like I said, a lot of the really really really popular games on Sony, will never go to MS or Nintendo because they are owned by Sony.
I really hope the European launch is successful. I like the Playstation too much to see it die, I was unfortunate enough to see one of my favourite consoles die once (Dreamcast) I don't need another. pimperjonesthe difference was Sega for the most part couldnt keep a console alive, Sony was the one that beat the dreamcast, and made the most successful console pretty much ever with the ps2, i have no doubt it will be fine, the launch will blow people away, and the games will kickass
A thing that I find pathetic is that Developers are afraid of making more PS3Â exclusives cuz there aren't many PS3 in the market but the PS3 wont sell more if there aren't more exclusives...so basically developers are hoping that magically people buy the PS3 for no reason and maybe...maybe making some exclusives now that they would have a wider market...a market that ironically the don't want to create by helping a new born PS3 with early excluisives
In a case Kojima and Konami with MGS4 they are taking their chances cuz they know that MGS4 is a system seller and with the mega success they had with the previous Playstation sys and MGS games they have their niche there that can be exploited to create a bigger market and release even more games later on
A bad example is Sega that knew VF5 has a niche with the PS fans and Sony but crapped their pants to think they are gonna get stuck cuz the PS3 will NEVER sell and they ported it ot the 360 in hopes of attracting the "other" side of the market and making more money (WOW specially from the fact that the game is a port from an arcade game) but by making that generous gesture they killed on step of the PS3 in the good direction since the game was a success with the critics (maybe except Jeff I-have-no-real-friends-that-is-why-I-need-online) that could have encouraged more PS3 sales
In another view we see Capcom with DMC4 a game that has also a niche in the PS consoles but its a game that is in the fine line between "if you wont sell more PS3 we will make this multi plat and go the Sega way" unluckily they dont have such a strong product to have the Kojima console seller insurance and in any case you were wondering about Dead Rising and Lost Planet...well when Capcom revealed they were about to cancel these game cuz they had little faith in the 360s japan market you think twice about "Capcom loves the 360"
Sadly in this gen its sad cuz developers come with BS like "we want all consoles to share this great game" when they decided to make multi plat a previous exclusive, that its only a false way of saying "were are crapping our pants about x consoles market but hey were wont do anything to help it"Â
Sony need desperately now to secure there Euro launch and with at least another 1.5 million sold cuz of launch getting a total of more than 3 mil they can be assured that developers will start looking twice about not making a PS3 exclusive...

Why didn't Sony bring out the big guns in North American launch. Gran Tourismo HD would have sold at least half million PS3 alone. Then there's Heavenly Sword which incidently is on the back of the PS3 box but is nowhere to be seen. I blame Sony. They should have released the console with their three top exclusives directly from Sony Studios. pimperjonesI'd rather have a good game than a rushed game. I think Sony is doing the right thing with their 1st and 2nd party exclusives, they're taking their time to put a great product on PS3's owners hands.

Thats may be a good move for people who like Sony but it's the worst move when your in a battle. In war you don't say hey lets keep all my powerful units in reserve and defend the country with our pathetic troops cause by the the time you release your best troops the wars over. Sony could have sold an extra million units had they released GT HD and Heavenly Sword along with RFOM. There's no excuse for the lack of AAA first party titles at launch when you've had 1 year to prepare.
Its silly to think any of the big 3 are going to fail at this point I think the console wars are going to be different unlike the old days a console winning does not = the competition dying. The PS2 killed the Gamecube and Xbox in sales but yet they are both back with more consoles and I doubt even if the PS3 is not #1 this time that there won't be a PS4 and so on. Unlike the old days there is now enough gamers to support 3 consoles beside the hardcore gamers who buy every console.
I think the competition is healthy and going to be that way for a while and its stupid to say a console that barely been out for 3months is going to failure when people camped out for weeks for it, got shot for it, sold it for 3-4x its original price on ebay and in 3months sold almost 2mil consoles with limited supply(I still have yet to see a PS3 at a store for sale)
Dude how the HELL are you gonna send your "powerful units" if they are not ready? this is ABSURD, look at heavenly sword its been almost 5 months since the PS3 launch and its not even ready! even Resistance was kind of rushed for it to be released in the launch but they got lucky cuz it was an excellent title for a launch (contrary to what GS or the 360 fanboys wanna inform you) dude its a BASIC thing for a console launch to suck...look at the Wii it used as its best weapon A GAMECUBE PORT dude that is like WTF if you ask me, the Wii launched sucked as bad as the PS3 but all changed cuz fo the over-hype of "positive" feed back and the magical number"250" next to it (that if you ask me its a death trap that is showing clearly every day as developers continue to ignore the console in each consecutive new game announcement) but hey the media wanna inform you that the PS3 launched sucked and want you to forget about the Wii launch...and don't get me started with the 360s launch
They had a whole extra year to make those titles ready for launch. By not releasing Gran Tourismo HD at launch they lost a good half million unit sales if not a million. Sony knew they were gonna face tough competition at launch what I don't get is why they didn't prepare. It's the case of spreading yourself too thin, Sony was too busy pimping out BluRay tech and producing hollywood flops (Basic Instinct 2) that they ignored their bread and butter which is gaming royalties. A Jack of all trades is a king of none. Sony needs to get their priorities straight in the future.Dude how the HELL are you gonna send your "powerful units" if they are not ready? this is ABSURD, look at heavenly sword its been almost 5 months since the PS3 launch and its not even ready! even Resistance was kind of rushed for it to be released in the launch but they got lucky cuz it was an excellent title for a launch (contrary to what GS or the 360 fanboys wanna inform you) dude its a BASIC thing for a console launch to suck...look at the Wii it used as its best weapon A GAMECUBE PORT dude that is like WTF if you ask me, the Wii launched sucked as bad as the PS3 but all changed cuz fo the over-hype of "positive" feed back and the magical number"250" next to it (that if you ask me its a death trap that is showing clearly every day as developers continue to ignore the console in each consecutive new game announcement) but hey the media wanna inform you that the PS3 launched sucked and want you to forget about the Wii launch...and don't get me started with the 360s launch

I have to agree with you there. Your right, the PS2 beat the Gamecube and Xbox hands down, but the Xbox and Gamecube stayed alive pretty easily. I think they will all survive... it's just too early to see which one becomes the most popular. Its silly to think any of the big 3 are going to fail at this point I think the console wars are going to be different unlike the old days a console winning does not = the competition dying.

What I don't get is how Sony had ALL this time (delaying the PS3 launch) to make killer games (not all Sony developers are working on the PS3) and now we are stuck waiting for the PS3 to climb a mountain. Sony put themselves in a position that they never had to be in. :( I just hope everything works out...firestorm91Exactly can you believe Sony spent 130 million on "Stealth" which made like 2 dollars. Even with hollywood martian accounting Sony had to have at least spent 100 million on that turd. If Sony spent 100 million on PS3 launch titles we'd have like twice the amount of games we have now and wouldn't have to stand 360 fanboy redicules.
Suggestion ignoredpimperjones your ignorance never stops amazing me
....if only things were as simple as you want them to be be :(
As a small recommendation I suggest you read a little about Sony on Wiki :)

Ignorance is bliss.
Take my suggestion. Quit trolling

:?
Movies got bigger budgets because there's more sources for financing them like product placement (You do not see VAIOs in Sony's games) and there's also more sources for revenue (Cinema release, video release, out-leasing to TV channels) where the box office alone many times surpasses the production budgets.
Yes Sony made a blunder with Stealth in 2005 but the director had previously made two box office hits xXx and The Fast and the Furious (a wonder people only realised that his movies suck when Stealth was released).
Another thing is that those money could not have been moved to a game because they came from different investors, a way to split the risk, the big studios should be more seen as publishers for other movie studios than sole investors.
In the end taking risks which may end up as flops has brought Columbia Pictures from the edge of bankruptcy to the annually highest or second highest grossing studio for the last 5 years (2005 was a total blunder) and setting the record for highest annual box office gross twice.
Did anyone read the article? Why not argue his points instead of flipping out over the word "inquirer" its not a tabloid article by any stretch. JiveT
It's so sad that it's not even funny and what is the point of debating something not even people in System Wars wouldn't waste time on?

I am far from a Sony fanboy (you can check my post history) but I won't even waste my time reading that article. Any article about Sony from the inquirer is biased. They really seem to have something against Sony. As for this thread, some valid points have been made. Charlie made a good point about 3rd Party companies getting scared when they see the difference in marketshare between companies. Look at the fact that companies are more willing to do a game on PS2 than PS3, but yet they will make it for 360 and not Xbox. I always see people say PS3 has only been out for a few months, give it a chance. You have to take into consideration developers are trying to make money now. They can't wait much longer. Microsoft forced their hand by coming out a year early and having about 10mil sold by the time Sony has 1mil. Also there's the fact that Nintendo is selling ridiculous amounts of systems right now. Nintendo is doing the numbers people thought Sony would be doing right now. The funny thing is that people are saying things will pick up when the PS3 gets more games, but what about when the Wii get's more games.GoddBlessproblem is you can only make so many games that use a motion sensing controller that are worth a damn, and serious gamers want graphics. not saying its a bad system, its fun, but it only has its niche. the gimmick will wear off, and it will be used for casual gaming and fun when your not playing your box or PS3(depending on which the person has) most people dont have a wii exclusively, cause they just arnt the greatest out there, they are just cheap, and fun, good bang for the buck.
