Ok here is my history i had a 60 gb ps3 it had the yellow light of death, i bought a 40 gb ps3.i had never backed up my 60gb hdd And know i can't recover my data. If i put it in my ps3 it says it has to be formatted, the computer doesn't assign a letter to it, and to assign a letter i have to format it. I bought a sata to usb adapter and i plugged it on my 40gb ps3 but my ps3 does not recognize it. I don't have any more ideas, Can you help me please??

So you're saying that the 60gig and 40gig HDD on the Ps3's are assigned to it and you can't get it to assign to a different one(60gig or 40gig switched). Maybe you can't install OEM HDD that came with the PS3 to another one. If you have a pc, have you tried transferring your saved data to it in a file and then transfer that to a flash drive and insert the flash drive into the PS3 and try to see if it can retrieve the data if it's not protected.

yes, it nly happens to the 20 and to the 60gb models, what happens it's that when you turn your ps3 the green light appears, a yellow light flashes, the console bips three times and the red light starts to flash. What heppened to me was that i was playing MGO and suddenly my ps3 turn off and the red light started flashing. Since then every time i turn it on that happens

did you happen to lose power in your room while the ps3 was trying to save to the HDD, that can corrupt your HDD. Maybe you can't get the HDD to work on the 40gig because the 20 and 60gig versions are backwards compatible with the PS1 and PS2, my be a factor but i don't know.

if i put in the pc it sees it but i doesn't assign a letter, so you can't see what it's inside, to assign a letter you need to format it. i have already tried that. At least that happened on Windows Vista and with Windows Xp, maybe a mac sees it i don`t know

The ps3 sees the hdd (when i insert it instead of the 40gb hdd) but it says it has to be format

I wonder if there's a default assigned letter to unformatted PS3 HDD, have you called a support line or PS3 tech to see if there's such a thing like that?

i live in Uruguay, i know Sony's number but i need to add more numbers to call to US, i don´t know those numbers so i can´t call. I sent Sony an email asking if they could send me an "integrado" (the part that it's failing acording to my technitian, integrado is in Spanish i don't know how it is in English) so that my technician would replace it in my broken ps3

There is such thing, i had it:( I just got a new PS3 sent to me, couldn't be bothered with trying to get my data back... most trophies require you to replay the game anyway. There doesn't seem to be an easy way of extracting it... if you even can :?

if you put in youtube you will see some videos. Here in Uruguaya guy had 2 ps3 with this proble, they were both 60gb. Acording to my technicician the problem is with the 60 and the 20 gb version. But it doesn't happend to the 40gb that's why the 20 and 60gb version are not any longer sell. This happends because the 40gb has a diferent motherboard. At least this is what the technicician told me

acording to the last video creator his problem was madae on porpouse he wrote this on youtube:

""It wasn't a hard drive problem. I created the problem my self by installing a dummy OtherOS boot loader. The problem was fixed by holding down the power button for 10 seconds when booting up. It wasn't actually bricked. It's a proof-of-concept video."

You know, when you have to fish out youtube videos just for us to see, it's not a big problem. "Yellow light of Death" was probably just coined by fanboys who didn't know that the "of Death" part was related to Microsoft products. Does no one remember the Blue screen of Death?

Its happened to me before. I just turn it on and the light turns green but then immediately switches to yellow and then turns off to red. But dude why did you buy a 40gb? my warranty had expired and so i called sony and got a brand new 60gb for only $150. I tried to find a way to back up the data but I failed. It looks like your gona have to start from scratch all over again. It just happened out of randomness. I was in the middle of a game of COD4 online and it just turns off! Then i couldnt turn it bak on

Nope its so rare that even now people are accused of trolling if they get it, due to few trolls filling the boards with fake claims of YloD a few months ago...

Hey, sorry to bump up such an old topic, but earlier this month my PS3 got Yellow Light syndrome after taking one too many bumps at the airport, and like many unfortunate blokes, I never bothered backing up my data. However, there is hope for all of us irresponsible slackers, as I think I've learned of a solution that will restore our precious game data to our replacement units (something that Sony should do for us, but are too lazy and indifferent to bother with). Basically, you need to save your HDD unit and its chassis from your broken PS3 before you send it in for repairs. Make sure you don't send in the chassis, because Sony might not send it back! (I learned this the hard way, and am currently awaiting the replacement that Sony is mailing me) You'll also need a USB flash drive or external HDD, a spare 2.5 inch SATA HDD unit, and a SATA HDD adapter cable for USB. It has to be a bare-bones plug-and-play adapter, not an external enclosure! (External enclosures require you to reformat the hard drive inside, and we definitely don't want that). Once you've collected the necessary hard ware, put the spare HDD unit inside of the PS3, and start the system up. The PS3 will prompt you to reformat the HDD, and since this is NOT the HDD with our precious data on it, we will do it. Once you have a fully functional PS3, you can connect your original HDD using the SATA adapter cable. Now here's where it gets a little fuzzy, but the next step will either be to use the PS3's system restore utility, or to access the data on the HDD the same way you would if you were getting a guest's game save off of a flash drive. I'll know which it is once I get my replacement chassis and adapter cable in the mail. Now, if your spare HDD is of equal or greater size than the one from your old PS3, you could just call it a day after this step. However, since my PS3 is a 20GB unit, and the hard drive I had in it was 120 GB, with my spare being my old 20 GB HDD, that will not do for me. Once the data is on the spare HDD, it's time to use the system backup utility, and back up everything to the USB flash drive or external HDD. Once everything has been securely backed up, it's time to swap the spare HDD for the permanent one, and re-format it. Once it's re-formatted, you can restore your data from the flash drive / exernal HDD. Well, on paper it sounds like a pain in the bahunkus, and requires swapping the HDD twice, but if it helps me rescue my 2+ years of game data, I am all for it. Again, I cannot express enough my sheer annoyance that Sony doesn't do this for us, because by all rights they SHOULD. Microsoft takes every step they can to preserve a customer's data during Xbox 360 exchanges, but I suppose that since they have a much higher failure rate, they're have a lot more customers to worry about ticking off. Oh well, it's been a pain, but as long as I can get my data back, and my PS3 works, then I guess I don't have a whole lot of reason to whine. If this procedure works, I'll be sure to document it thoroughly, since no-one else seems to have bothered to yet. I'm basically working from a bunch of vague forum messages, so if my spending an hour to make a Youtube tutorial will save someone else from a headache, it's well worth the effort in my eyes.

You can not switch HDD with out formatting so if you didn't back up your save you can do nothing.

Back up your save = on a USB flash drive

Happened to me too..

Sony customer service was really bad. And, for me, I won't get to keep my data.

Happened to me today. Never heard of this problem till I Googled the fault.
I got a 40gb PS3 just before Christmas '07 & it died when I had a power cut when the HDD light was flashing the day before MGS4 was released (AGONY)
I phoned Sony after abit of research & I got told the same thing 'It only happens on the 60 & 20gb models' to which I replied 'It's a 40...' what happend is when they received my 40gb when it broke & it was under warranty they sent me a refurbished 20gb model with a new 40gb hdd inside.
After voicing my displeasure of buying a 40gb model & receiving a lesser speced & cheaper version of the system I originally purchased I got an apology & they are going to fix this issue. Still couldn't offer me an appropriate solution as to how to recover my game saves...

Just aswell Sony usually has rock solid reliability, their customer service is f*****g appauling.

Anyone here succesfully recovered date or found a web page were someone else has?
