I have been a PSP & PS3 developer for some number of years now... Having programmed the PS3 since the original CEB prototype - I think it's fair to say that over the years, I have shown a great deal of brand loyalty - Hell, I've built my career on it. So, when my own PS3 started showing the yellow-light-of-death (YLOD), I thought - "shame I am out of warranty", "but hey - I'm sure Sony can fix this..." Rang customer services (who to give them their due were very friendly & tried to be helpful), but they said that every option for repair / replacement would end-up with the loss of ALL my hard-drive data. ! What?, hang on a minute... I had taken Kutaragi at his word, "PlayStation 3 is not a games machine" and as such my PS3 happens to also be my Cell R&D machine. I have invested a great deal of time & effort writing code for that bloody thing... all of which of course I can no longer access - thanks Sony, your the best! :) On top of that I had created a whole bunch of content for Little Big Planet. My son & I had spent months creating levels, all of which are now out of reach. - Hey Sony, I thought user generated content was just that! It's OURS! - Allow US access to it!!! I asked customer services if it would be possible to transfer the HDD signing from one machine to another, like M.S. do. (So I can put my HDD into the brand new 80gig replacement I just bought) "oh no sir, that is a service we can not offer" - Why not? The best solution the customer services could offer was that I might try and contact SCEE and explore the possibility of getting the feature added... WTF!?! ... Okay, I'll try ... ??? but how long will that take? To be quite honest, If I can't get my data back, I'm thinking about dumping the console entirely... :(

The PS3 only understands FAT32 formats. It can't "see" NTFS formats. I don't know if this has anything to do with your hard drive problems though.

Nope - my hard drive(s) are physically fine ... For instance the drive with my Linux / SPU work was not even in the machine when it died! But the problem remains that I have no way on earth of accessing my data on ANY other PS3. This is a FAIL of epic proportions!!! UPDATE: Just found a guide on how to potentially fix the problem... Basically take it apart, then use a heat-gun to re-flow the solder under the CPU & RSX!!! I'm sorry, that has to be the absolute last resort. SCE-E/I/A I implore you, could you please add a system update that allows you to swap the hard-drive signing between two machines? Here are two cases which I can see: a) 1 broken PS3 & 1 Working PS3: * User logs in to PSN with the working machine. * You send a signal via the PSN to perform the ID swap. * Working machine re-boots, but is unable to read it's own drive without a format. * User swaps the drives over, so the old one is now in the new machine. * Life returns to normal... Smiles all round! :) b) 2 working PS3's and a liar: (pretending one is broken) * User logs in to PSN with the working machine. * You send a signal via the PSN to perform the ID swap. * ... as before ... * The user is still left with 2 PS3's that can only read 1 of the drive signings at a time, each! * Life returns to normal... Smiles all round! :) I really can't see how security could be a show stopper... (as I said only SCEI having gone too far with paranoid electronics can spoil this). We should be able to keep our signing rights in the same way you would expect to be able to recover your profile.

So, in other words if my 60GB gets YLOD, I lose my trophies and savedata? Can I transfer the HDD from a dead ps3 to a refurbished one and expect all savedata and trophies to be registered on the refurbished ps3?

It's all gone... Sure trophies may survive (they are stored on-line) But: Save data, Movies, Family pictures... All your un-published LBP data, any computer programs you've written & all the months you spent setting Linux up - are all gone... I even installed LBP on the new 80gig machine - in order to see if I could copy my published levels back to 'my moon'... But I found out quite quickly that I'd have to start the game from scratch. What about all the materials I had collected in the game to make my level with? I don't have them any more... :S In a sentence: Your hard-drive is encrypted for your machine and you can not read the hard-drive in any other PS3, or PC. :(

Hey guys, my PS3got the YLOD (yellow light of death) yesterday, it really sucks if i lose all of my saved games, but I will live. What I want to know is if there is anyone who can help me fix my PS3 without sending it in to Sony because I really can't afford the $315 to get it fixed.

Thanks.
